One of my ancestors was a soldier in the army of the Russian Empire and during one of the Russo-Turkish wars he bought a Greek woman at a slave market in Turkey and married her. She is the great-grandmother of my grandmother. Yay for white slavery! (Do Greeks count as white?  )

One grandfather was a navy corpsman during ww2, the other grandfather was an AA gunner for the german army. Both of them were too young to see much. Other than that, salesmen/middle/working class on american side, and intelligentsia types on the german side. Also apparently on the american side i have a connection to the daughters of the american revolution. On my father's side: Conservative intellectuals, career soldiers and royalists that go all the way to councilmen of the spanish colonies in America. A bit closer on the family tree, I believe maybe Great grandparents. Great Grandma used to hide the Irishmen's guns as they were going to town, so they weren't caught by the British with them. Her father found out about it, and reasoning that if he can find out about it, the Brit's probably will too, so he shipped her to the US. Great Grandpa stole a pig. Somehow, that got him to the US. I would like to imagine that it was a magical pig he rode across the Atlantic. They both met up through church in Chicago, and were apparently from the same town or area in Ireland.

It's all very hard to keep track of, between the family I met in Ireland last year, the family I didn't meet in Ireland last year (I didn't get a chance to meet up with one 2nd cousin because she was busy being the mayor of Limerick), the family I met in Birmingham last year, some circus folk I've been told of but given no real details on (acrobats, i think) at least two murderers (brothers that *accidentally* killed a guy in a union dispute, one ran to Ohio, the other California, never caught), and it's all just on my mother's side of the family.

my gf's family is pretty bomb. her great grandfather tried to unionize steel workers and got murdered for it, then the rest of them ran off to the midwest to be preachers. the most successful of them had a dozen trashy little churches, all under his wife's name because of some sort of tax-evasion conviction on his part

most of the men on my dads side committed suicide so I guess that's something to look forward to. I know that one of my great grandfathers somewhere up the chain was a violinist for the royal philharmonic symphony and played for the queen, that was before his mrs died and he took to the bottle, lost his position in the symphony and could only play on street corners for drinking money. then he killed himself. current day relatives are all pretty useless, breaking the cycle next year and getting a degree.

the maternal side were fairly prosperous business owners who got their poo poo wrecked by The Comuniss, leading to a psychological skidmark of victim-complex and elitism from there on out.the paternal side were dirt-poor stonemasons and i think smallholders, got elevated to high-ranking Party positions, became architects & quantity surveyors and are p much the most hard-working and normal people i know. its like a budget Milan Kundera plot lol

mother's side all came from the south and lived on plantations, so it's safe to assume they owned slaves at one point. my maternal grandmother was closely related to Robert E Lee. and she was also extremely racist. half of my father's side were railroad workers and the other side were immigrants from Germany who left once the Nazi's took over.
