You can also use fenugreek to get maple flavor, interestingly. They use it frequently in the production of artificial maple syrup.

It also promotes breast milk production!

you can get tomato paste in a tube that will stay fresh in the fridge for a year or more. great for when you just need a little bit here and there.

Eff that, buy 12 packs of the cans and go through them in a couple months.

We use a lot of tomato paste.

So do I and it's such bullshit because I almost never use an entire can. I need cans that are half the size of a normal tomato paste can.

Oh. I mean I toss a whole can into some things, but yeah, sometimes I use half a can and then put saran wrap on and then within a week or two use the rest.

Essentially just made this, though I did sub in nonfat vanilla yogurt with a bit of oil, and declined to buy their cocoa.

Chinese style sponge cakes; heavy on the egg, feels and tastes like air, yum. Didn't fold quite well enough but I'll do better next time.

Chinese birthday cake. Delicious! Basically a chiffon, light airy eggy cake, with homemade whipped cream and fruit topping. Next time maybe I'll get a second springform and make it properly, with two smaller layers and whipped cream and fruit in the middle. Regardless, turned out great. My wife decorated, gently caress piping and arranging strawberries just so. :3:

First try at shakshuka! Came out reasonably, just onion, garlic, cumin, salt, pure red chili powder. The egg yolk broke a little but was a hair runny at the end and I suck at cracking eggs so that's fine.

I think some more spices of some sorts would be good, any other tips? Cooking for one is a *little* sad, but my wife hates stewed tomato dishes of pretty much all sorts.

lol I'm fine making it just for myself and any children who happen to like it.

Yeah I'm seeing adding cumin seeds and toasting them, then adding the onions and such. Paprika vs smoked paprika vs pure red chili? And yeah I'll probably try to grab a bell pepper next I go food shopping, this was "what do I even have that works in this". Thanks!

Shakshuka attempt 2: better, added toasted cumin seeds, smoked paprika, bell pepper, a little less red chili.

Can anyone confirm, shakshuka translates to "burns your mouth because you shovel it in while it's too hot because it looks so good", roughly, right?

Can confirm. That's exactly what it translates to.

Thought so.

On a more practical note, how much of shakshuka can be premade to save on time if I'm making it, oh, in the morning before work.

Like, can I make everything except the egg, fridge it, and then just spoon a bunch into a pan, heat it, poach egg, done?

Ooh, I can answer that! I just made some for the first time two days ago. I fridged it with the eggs included, and they were fine when I ate them a day later! Still runny, etc. Not that you can't do it how you said, mine is just the lazy way.

Did you heat it, or eat it cold? I could imagine it being good both ways...

Gah I want to make more. Maybe tomorrow morning.
