This may have been answered as I haven't read the whole thread yet, but the best example of why homegrown wasn't allowed happened just after DPPH was closed and some enterprising goons started something similar off-site.

All was well for a few weeks until some goon posted pics/video of his nude, overweight girlfriend. Whale comments poured in, iirc some doxxing, and the guy threatened to turn in all the info he had on fellow goons to the authorities. Then, if I'm not mixing up memories he got doxxed back including goons who were going to go to his house and kick his rear end. Not sure what happened from there. The site went down off and on due to this and then was split into pieces and re-opened on multiple sites depending on content.

As an 04, I'm proud to have joined during SA's golden age. I don't even think something like pink flyers would work in today's GBS. Goons would just post flyers that say "im gay" everywhere.
