sure!
the hierarchy of foreignness is in 5 tears:
utlanning: a being of the same species with a similar culture as the subject. communication is generally easily, blocked only by personal biases.
ex: most other kinds of red-blooded americans, europeans.
framling: same species but from a somewhat different culture. In the books they would be from a different planet than the subject, but here in reality the difference between thinking in the east and west is enough to make people of those areas of the world effectively framling to one another.
ex: racist from alabama, chinaman.
raman: an individual of a different species, but with whom communication is possible. likely has perceptions or ideas that make it difficult to understand from a human point of view, but these kinds of beings are still worthy of the highest moral consideration and quite possibly offer one of the best advantages a sentient race can hope to achieve: they allow the transcending of traditional thought structures without necessitating abandoning them. sapient creatures of other species can be considered to be of this category even if they evolved on the same planet as the subject, so long as communication is possible.
ex: greys, reptilian "aliens", orcs. elves and dwarves too for that matter. not as in like short people but the people of Durin.
varelse: "true" aliens. sentients so foreign that meaningful communication is not possible. it is only with this category of beings that war is justifiable, and once contact is made, some would claim that war is inevitable. an assertion which cannot be proven due to humanity's lack of experience with this kind of intelligence.
ex: deep gods, Old Ones, jovian leviathans
djur: non sapient. capable of independent action, but there can be no meaningful communication since this type of creature lacks self-awareness and the capacity for rational thought.
ex: most "animals" save the very intelligent ones such as whales and elephants, and those that have been bred such that they can meaningfully communicate with humans (dogs, some species of birds, etc) the exceptions are all raman.
Thanks.
