Tap "A" to drink!!!

A bunch of game developers and some people of note reflect on their favorite PS1 games. Everyone loves PaRappa and Final Fantasy 7.

Alundra is probably the best Zelda clone you're likely to find on the PS1. You explore dungeons and people's dreams to solve the mystery of this demon who wants to kill everyone. A solid action/adventure game.

A 3D, mission based space combat game? Heck yes, sign me up. The sequel to a good game in Colony Wars, Vengeance did things just a bit better. Branching story paths and solid gameplay.

The sheer amount of tears and rage that the tutorial mission on the original Driver caused was a memory I had, hoo boy.

You couldn't play the game AT ALL until you finished them and they were a nightmare.

We had a no returns policy back then but every now and then I'd relent on that for Driver, because, well, I couldn't do them either :toot:

I rented driver and never got past the tutorial.

When I first saw the intro for FFVIII as a kid, I had to restart it just to watch it again. It looked so good for the time, and I couldn't wrap my head around it.
The first PS1 rpg I ever played, and my favorite one still. Replaying it made me love it even more for realizing how off-the-rails it got through each disk.
The broken junctioning system, Triple Triad, Side Quests, it all owned.

FF8 is my favorite PS1 final fantasy because of how badly you could break the game within the first couple hours.

also triple triad is still the most fun minigame in the whole series and i wish i could play it on my phone constantly

I managed the Driver tutorial okay but the loving license tests on Gran Turismo were the worst. I had to get a neighbor of mine to get me the international licenses because I was like 8 and it was beyond me.

Nightmare Creatures was one of my all time favorites for the PSX. It was pretty spooky and the fighting was really fun at the time. It's one of those games that I'd love to play again, along with Vigilante 8 2nd Offense which was imo the best vehicle combat game ever.

The weapons were nuts and you could gradually upgrade your vehicle throughout the game, changing it's appearance and performance. Performing special moves in your fully upgraded vehicle made you feel powerful as gently caress, I have fond memories of wrecking poo poo to the funkiest soundtrack I'd ever heard in a video game.

Agreed, but at least they didn't stop you playing the game  - I had to stop taking in second hand copies of Driver after a couple of months, I had that many.

Those two games along with Resident Evil 2 were some of the most hyped releases as I remember, for some reason people were really excited for them, good games to be fair. Along with Spyro.

Thinking back now, the huge games were often racing games, like Gran Turismo, Colin McCrae 2, Motorhead, Wipeout 2097, Formula 1 etc. I guess it's because the FPS genre hadn't caught hold yet on consoles.

It's easy to underestimate how much the PS1 dominated the UK perhaps, out of the 9 walls we had of games I reckon 7 were PS1 games, the second biggest was N64 then Dreamcast (eventually) then Saturn.

I still want a next-gen sequel to G-Police:

But man, the first PlayStation was a loving wonderful console. Syphon Filter, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo 2 (and the rubber smelling CD), Spyro...
Hell, even the tech demo was something I enjoyed.

Yes, that techdemo:

FF8 had the best aesthetic of all the Final Fantasy games IMO. I really dug the more realistic post modern/quasi military look. Those cutscenes absolutely floored me when I first saw them, N64 would never have poo poo like that. The only problem with it is after FF7 the expectactions for Square-Enix games were sky loving high, doubly so for FF games. And you know what, FF8 mostly delivered, I had a lot of fun with that game and really enjoyed it despite the nay-sayers. SeeD was cool, Gunblades were cool, robots with lasers and chain guns were cool, Evil sorceress was cool, Giant flying fortress was cool, Triple Triad rocked. The downside is that really wonky/gimmicky draw and junction system, once you figure out how to break it then it gets fun but my first time going through the game I didn't really understand it and found it really frustrating after the last game had a very straightforward dependable slot system that I wanted back. I really wish they would have let me collect cool materias in FF8 :(, then it would have been perfect. I actually played through FF8 about a year ago on a lark and knowing how to cheese the system right from the get go is pretty fun :).

Had totally bitchin tunes as well.
