Before the Anno Domini was developed, Christians relied on the Anno Mundi system, which counted from the beginning of the world; however, since they relied on the Septuagint (the Alexandrian Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible), they calculated it to be a few thousand years older than the Jewish Anno Mundi. Eastern Christians only switched to Anno Domini in 1700, when Peter the Great had Russia make the switch. AM never quite caught on in the West.

As I'm sure the Wikipedia article itself points out (at least if any autist worth the name has ever edited it) the actual republican Romans didn't use that numbering much themselves, instead identifying the year by the names of the two guys who were consuls that year. (This method obviously sucked, especially since there were a lot of different guys with the same or similar names showing up.)
