BAEST MODE!!!

Sonic Lost World came out in 2013 as the first of 3 exclusive Sonic titles on Nintendo consoles. There was some optimism for the game, it came on the heels of Colors and Generations two games that were well regarded. Lost World received mixed reviews, mixed fan reaction and given it was on the Wii U, low sales. As time has progressed the reaction on here seems to get more negative with some recent opinions of the game placing it among the worst Sonic games of all time. I hate to call anyone out specifically, but since I sort of mentioned it in the first video the recent Run Button LP of the game did just this, except as I watched it it seemed clear they didn't know how to play the game (and I hadn't even played it yet.) Given their approach to games I don't really blame them, it is a complex game that doesn't explain itself well. This isn't intended as a call out to them or anyone who didn't like this game, but their LP did make me want to play it to see if it played the way I thought it would.

Sonic Lost World is in fact a surprisingly complex game. Sonic has the following abilities:

Running, Jumping, Double Jumping, Spin Dash, Homing Attack, Homing Kick, Downward Bounce Attack, Wall Running, Edge Clinging, Ducking, Wall Jumping, Vaulting and several abilities that can be chained together. On top of this he can also use wisp powers on top of some other power ups you can collect in various ways. Some aren't even explained in the manual.

What you are left with is a game that is confusing to play until you sit back and think about all of the options at your disposal. It feels slow because you just rely on holding down the run button, it feels awkward because when Sonic does run up walls he does so incredibly slowly and combat is frustrating because you aren't aware your homing attack powers up or what the kick does. It's only after you think how various abilities work together that the game becomes fluid and fast. Instead of just using the run button you can chain it together with the spin dash, for example. The spin dash can also be used to quickly defeat certain enemies which would otherwise slow you down.

The storyline pits Sonic against Eggman and his new allies THE DEADLY SIX and goes in the direction of a Saturday morning cartoon rather than whatever it was we saw in Sonic 06. I really like it. It's dumb, but every once in awhile Sonic has a line or reaction that's funny. I can certainly understand why people hate it.

Joining me once again is Hulkamatt. Hulkamatt had no idea this game existed until I told him about it. Even after I told him the name of the game he didn't think it was a new game. He's coming in completely blind, although I'm sure his reactions will be colored by my praise for the game. I'll be getting everything I can, the red star rings, the levels and the free DLC. Red Star Rings that aren't picked up in the main run through will be picked up in bonus videos (basically those that require you play a level twice.) Since Hulkamatt is coming in blind please only post spoilers in tags, unless we discuss it in the LP. For example I've told him that there is a stereotypical fat character in the Deadly Six, so talking about him is fair game. There will be some sort of a contest at some point because Hulkamatt has some Sega game codes or something. I am unclear on exactly what all this means and I am unsure exactly how to decide who gets them. Maybe a competition involving this game, or art, or Crazy Taxi. We'll see!

Some of the Zeti's names are not actually mentioned in game. So I will just name them all.

Also one last fun little fact. After Eggman introduces them as the Deadly Six they are never called that in game again and are just called Zeti.

I think most of the extremely negative opinions about this game are due to the fact that it was the Sonic game released after Sonic Generations. Most people were hoping that Sega would follow up Generations with something on a similar level, but Lost World isn't really as good.

I think its a good , not great, game, but I will be glad to see you do a positive run. I like a lot of ideas this game had, and I like a lot of what it took from generations and colors, but I think it slips up execution sometimes. I like the more cartoony, less serious plot, but I think the deadly six are just annoying, not funny annoying. Still some levels and cut scenes really had me laughing. Sonic team are still not good writers. I didn't like the boss fights, and they kind of jammed in some gimmicky stuff that wasn't fun to me.

However, the graphics are generally good, the level designs are solid and the game has the flow a sonic game should .(Except when wisps sometimes interrupt.) I hope poor reception and WiiU level sales didn't send the wrong message, because refining lost world's core gameplay would be a good move for sonic.

You will reconsider that by the time you've watched it all. It looks like a much better game to play than Sonic 06, but the story gets dumber and dumber, and the writing is painful. Sonic 06 was bad in a funny way. This attempts to be funny, in a bad way.

I get why people would say it looks like Mario Galaxy, but it more reminds me of Sonic X-treme, or bonus stages from Sonic 3D Blast. But obviously better done; I can't imagine that X-treme would have had levels as complex as this had it not been cancelled.

How much did this game sell for when it just came out? It looks like a budget title. Can't really comment on gameplay since I haven't played it, but the graphics look terrible if it was supposed to be a AAA title.

Actually I will comment a bit on gameplay - if the Circus bonus levels are how you avoid grinding in this game I think I'd rather grind, just because of the fact that barely being able to see Sonic once you hit some balloons looks like a really dumb and obvious design flaw.

So they intentionally made the graphics bad to get good FPS? I guess that's possible.

e: for examples of better-looking games, a simple example is Sonic Colors. Sonic Generations seems to have better looking 2D stages at least too. I was really surprised when MassRafTer and Hulkamatt complimented the 2D backgrounds in this game.

It's a console game, it doesn't matter how good it looks, unless it's shovelware it's going to run you 50-60 dollars. 30 is only a running price if it doesn't sell for poo poo or it's a handheld game. I mean hell, even Metroid Other M took a month before it hit the ground at 20 dollars. This game is good, corny cartoon poo poo notwithstanding.
Your standards should not be this loving ridiculous over graphics, this is the kind of poo poo that allows AAA games to cheat over and put gently caress all effort into things. Like it's incredibly stupid that your enjoyment of a mascot platformer is ruined and deemed to be placed in a garbage price range, just because not every strand of fur on Sonic can be seen in glorious 1080p.

The gameplay also looks very clunky and needing to charge homing shots sounds annoying. Having the flicky gates is dumb and they should have learned after that fiasco with those sun/moon emblems in Unleashed. When I look at a Platinum game being played I can see that even though there's all these different abilities they blend well together and everything flows fluidly. When I look at this game I see Sonic being at most Mario Fast when in the last couple of games he was Sonic Fast.

I really don't understand how you guys don't look at the graphics and see that they're Game Cube era. There's a difference between AAA graphics that look "realistic" for half a year and good graphics that people will actually remember by the next generation. This game has neither. Just because Graphics aren't everything (I don't remember the last time I bought an AAA game by the way) doesn't mean companies should feel free to skimp on it completely.

I only played the 3DS version, which was poo poo. This version looks maybe a little less poo poo? I remember the parkour stuff being incredibly clunky and hard to control, and in general the game just felt unsatisfying to play. Also the special stages were bafflingly poor conceived and basically impossible to play without sitting in a swivel chair or else pausing the game every 5 seconds to re-orient your 3DS

A major problem the 3DS version had was that the multi-hit homing attack had a stupidly big range. I remember failing one instant death platforming section enough times that the game started spawning a NSMB style helper item next to the checkpoint (an RC plane I think?). I tried it once and found it completely useless, so on further attempts I ignored it. After another five or so deaths, I finally get close to the end of the section. The last platform is at the end of a string of flying enemies, so I double tap the jump button and sonic bounces off them in sequence. Just after the last enemy dies Sonic flies into the screen and I hear an item box get popped. The camera pans back to Sonic standing next to the checkpoint with a useless RC plane floating next to him.

I stopped playing after that.

It's a very colorful game that fits the aesthetic I associate with Sonic. I really like the combination of a retro 16 bit and cartoonish look and think some of the effects that pop up later on look really good. As for the flicky gates they got in my way less than the star gates in Mario 3D World. I don't think there is anything wrong giving players a reason to not rush through levels. Like 3D World they give you alternate ways to pick up flickies although the circus is no Captain Toad. I like them more than the Mystery Boxes though. I did not like how the game looked at first, I will admit.

But it's not. It actually has less colors than good simple games. If there was a Wii U Kirby game it would look tons better than this. Heck just look at the current Kirby LP to see simple graphics done right. The character designs are also awful (look at any of the deadly six), making me believe that the "simple design" was more akin to "lazy design".

Also are there different circuses, or are they all the same 'bad breakout' gameplay?

In general the Mario 3D World gating system is better than this game's because you can't just unlock new gated levels by doing the same poo poo over and over again, instead you are forced to explore and find new areas in levels to advance. But I don't really like forcing the player to collect x number of collectible thingies to advance in general, unless maybe it's only for bonus content.

The circuses are always breakout to my knowledge but there are some other bonus stages. How is the 3D World system any different? In Lost World you have a choice, you can explore the level and find all the hidden flicky capsules or you can play the circuses (or a combo of both.) In 3D World you can explore the level and find the green stars or you can play the mystery boxes and Captain Toad stages.
