When you look at various historical empires (Mongols, Rome, etc.) you see that they inevitably fall into decline. When you see the political feuding and media-manufactured culture wars that are so prevalent in modern America, it seems that we are victims of our own success. No one can deny that America is global top-dog right now, but how long can we sustain it? How long will our empire last and what will be our downfall?

Hopefully America will secede the position of preeminent superpower and go the way of Britain and just hang out as a major player. This is wishful thinking and most people will probably die in a sea of nuclear fire within the next couple of hundred years or so.

Well it's not like we're on top in many ways except military power anymore, which seems pretty futile. America already is no longer the democracy it once was and political power is entirely dependent on wealth. Things will change when people finally get mad enough. Some scholars have said we're already overdue for a revolution. It is speculated we haven't gotten one started yet because conveniences like TV and the internet have distracted us from how bad things have gotten.

well, the roman empire lasted about 400 years or so as "the roman empire" and another 1000 as the byzantine empire, so probably a while unless the main 48 are completely glassed somewhere down the road (not particularly unlikely either)
