I'm ambivalent about anime. Sometimes I watch Ponyo with my son, and it seems pretty nice, but most serialized stuff seems lame beyond my capacity to comprehend, and I can't watch more than a few minutes. Please advise.

Tell me some good Animes to watch nowadays. I watched Akira, GHost in the Shell, some weird porno one, and a ninja one. Apart from the fact they were drawn rather than live action, they were pretty ok. Apart from the porno one...why do the monsters always have enough tentacle dicks to fill EVERY hole on a woman?

I really want to like anime, I used to like it as a teen but I just can't get into anything now. Everything just seems so grossly regressive and fan-servicey. Basically anime has a lot of really cool settings and general plots, but nearly every female character makes me cringe and every main character is a weird viewer stand-in who's incredibly awkward around women and expressing his feelings. I know lots of totally emotionally developed normal japanese people, are there any interesting animes that have a cast of fairly well adjusted people? It feels like the medium is trapped catering to a niche of socially stunted awkward spergs who want characters they can relate to, or trope-based characters they can instantly identify based on a set list of approved archetypes. Like can I just go on a rad space adventure or solve a creepy horror mystery or something without cringing at emotionally stunted japanese teen drama? People say I should watch Planets or some really old really long space opera, I should give that a shot.
