The mom is probably, as we say in the legal profession, "judgment proof" in that she doesn't have enough money to pay any substantial judgment against her. Cardinal rule of suits in tort is that you always sue the entity with the money.

As an aside, I hope they win this suit and put Bushmaster out of business. Guns are horrible.
