P8 lite or 3rd Gen Moto G for my mom that just dropped her 2nd gen G into the toilet? I'm assuming the p8 is still a lovely device even after factoring in the processor and design of it?

Beware the Forest's Mushrooms
I didn't really know where to ask this question, sorry if this is out of left field. I recently replaced an Android phone from early 2012, which ran 2.3.1 or something ancient. Among other things, I used my phone to store files using USB Mass Storage. Well, apparently that no longer works for reasons. I can still access the files just fine through my OS using MTP, but some specific programs do not want to access files from the a device. I guess it's because being a media device does not grant it a drive number which is needed for the path? I'm honestly not sure. It seems I can't just turn on Mass Storage, and I don't want to make a copy of these files every time a finicky program needs to access them.

Any ideas on how to work around this, short of just carrying around a usb stick with those files?

I wouldn't say it's a lovely device, it's just using a non-typical processor and isn't really built for American consumers. Huawei makes good devices but you really can't go wrong with the Moto G. You could also consider the new Blu Life One X 2016.

There's nothing glaringly wrong about them, but they don't stand out either. Biggest issue is the company is circling the drain. Unless the Vive VR headset is a huge hit for them, I have trouble believing they they going to be fielding any new phones by 2017.

Blu Life One X. Bought 3 for Christmas gifts. Great specs, good screen and battery life, $99 on first release.

I have trouble believing the Vive is going to work out for them considering Valve is a bunch of shitlords wrt OEM partners. Basically they're hosed unless Valve is giving them a huge secret subsidy, and that's not the way Valve seems to intend to operate.

What even happened to them, do they have a shitload of debt or something? While they weren't able to solidly innovate on the flagship end they seemed to be very competent at making solid if unexciting phones, they could have owned the low end market with boring but cheap and solidly built phones.

Well the 3rd gen moto g is water proof, so it's toilet safe.

They had too many variants which led to support issues coupled with bizarre ineffectual marketing. The number of phone variants they would release in a year would make Samsung blush and this is AFTER they said they were going to cut back.

I'm researching phone options for my mother. She uses her phone a lot, mostly for news, video, and games that I wouldn't guess are very demanding.

I've had an HTC One M8 for more than a year and really like it. Their software rarely bothers me, the hardware has held up great, and I don't think its battery life has diminished at all so far. But I saw there's no HTC phones "that matter" in the OP.

Does the new generation of HTC phones suck? Is it just that they've been surpassed by the competition?

I own an m8. When the m9 came out I found out that after throttling its practically comparable to the m8. All their models seem fine, but they are overpriced compared to the competition.

I bought and unlocked developer edition and with custom roms or CyanogenMod I have access to either latest senses from later models or root/beta features from other carriers.
Marshmallow/stagefright came out pretty fast.
They are good phones, but they have made some bad decisions after the m8.

HTCs pricing is downright mind-boggling sometimes - in the UK their "mid range" SD617 powered One A9 is more expensive than many flagships, including the One M9 on Amazon right now

Just get a used M8 and wait for the next manufacturer of well built phones to come along that will eventually wither away like Nokia and HTC has.

Is there any way to turn off the app optimization notification I get like every day on my s6? Optimizing apps for better battery performance is great and all, but which mongoloid Samsung developer thought it was good idea to notify the user the every day, even when there is nothing for the user to do? It won't let me disable notifications for Smart Manager, so I don't know how to hide/prevent these worthless notifications.

I finally got the update on my Nexus 6 a few days ago. I don't think my phone's possessed now, and it hasn't been much more murderous than usual, but it's possible that eldritch forces are responsible for the slightly better battery life.

My opinion on doze cooled, if I am not sleeping it doesn't do jack, I have rooted ways of dealing with battery drain and having a bare bones CyanogenMod or GPE edition ROM and only having 100 apps including system apps helps a lot.

I hope CM13 stable comes soon, nightlies are kinda broken atm.

Ordered the Nexus 6 for $250 ($265 with tax.) I'm guessing this price point is now reflective of how much it'll generally cost on ebay and such from henceforth (though it's already back to nearly $500 on Amazon for the moment being.) It's going to replace the verizon unlocked version of the Moto X 2nd generation, which worked fine but I did not like as much as the Nexus 5.

The midrange space is really crowded right now but if you've had your eye on one, the 64GB / 4GB RAM ZenFone 2 is down to $269 on Amazon.

I've still found it fine for reading and browsing Awful app one handed, otherwise just use two hands. Also grouped my home screen apps into the bottom right corner since I hold it with my right hand.

I've had my 6P for about a month and a half now and I'm still not used to it. Since I'm a Google Voice user I can switch to my 5 as soon as I get home. Removing it from my pocket and putting it back in is an ordeal now and I don't trust myself to do it with one hand. As a result, many times I've wanted to do something with it and had to wait or not bother at all because I didn't have a second hand available. I really hate the size because it's changed how I use my phone and not in a good way.
