I watched way more of Sakura Trick than I'd like to admit. That's the only bad show where I made it past three episodes this year. I can at least admire the audacity they had to give an episode this title:

I didn't watch any of Recently, My Sister is Unusual, but that show would have the creepiest premise ever even if all the characters were over 18 and they dropped the pseudo-incest. (There's a Ghost Dad joke somewhere in here.)

I've edited my post on page 1 because I just remembered Sailor Moon Crystal.

Mad Lupine

all the things you said
running through my head
3)Sailor Moon Crystal : I hated the new art style. The 3D was pretty jarring but it was only used during the transformation scenes, I think, so I could ignore those. However, there was too much off model stuff for me to tolerate. Also, I don't think the beginning of the story is the strongest so it made it less easy to sit through. Factor in the fact that they made it bi weekly for some reason (wasn't for quality control, that's for sure) and it was a recipe for disaster. They way this whole thing was handled astounds me to this day.

2)Nisekoi - I don't know how I got to episode 19 with this series. I hate how boring the main character is. I hate the set up. I hate how boring the main love interest is. But my god is the animation and art direction fantastic. Also the main love interest's best friend was amusing as she seemed to be the only one in the entire cast who wanted to see the plot move forward. I finally decided to drop it when a magnificently beautiful scene crafted by talented animators occurs in which some dumb plot contrivance happens (key breaks in locket) so the series can keep going. Not go forward, mind you. Just to keep going. And it keeps going in the manga. For 100+ chapters. Never forward. What a waste.

nisekoi.jpg

1)Ookami Shoujo to Kuro Ouji (Wolf Girl and Black Prince) - Holy poo poo. Wow. Umm... this was bad. Where to begin. I was in the mood to watch another shojo type show after marathoning 'Kimi ni Todoke' when I saw this on Crunchyroll. I read the plot synopsis and thought it might be some harmless pulp I can amuse myself with. Just gonna post the plot synopsis

Crunchyroll posted:

While the proud Erika boasts to her friends about being lovey-dovey with her boyfriend, she has never really had one for 16 years. Feeling the limits of lying, she took a picture of a cool guy she found in town and showed it to her friends as her boyfriend. But the person in the picture happens to be Sata Kyouya who is in the same grade in their school. While she was able to explain the situation and convince him to act like his boyfriend, he was not the nice looking boy she thought he would be: he was a super sadistic schemer! Thus begins Erika's life blackmailed into being Sata's dog.
What the gently caress was I thinking?! How could I be so naive?! The amount of emotional abuse this girl goes through is disturbing. Dude objectifies her, refers to her as his toy, constantly calls her names, when he finds that she now has feelings for him he leads her on only to crush her hopes leaving her in tears. AND SHE KEEPS COMING BACK FOR MORE!!! Then in the middle of the series, they become a "couple". Dropped it afterwards. This is either a case study of Stockholm Syndrome, or it has one of the worst female leads in a show ever.

I haven't watched Cross Ange or Mahouka but I doubt they'd top the poo poo that is Wolf Girl. I had to read "Oremonogatri!!" just so I could find joy in living again. Everyone, just read "Oremonogatri!!" A few of the volumes are available in English.

The best thing to come of the mahouka thread IMO.

Going to throw an extra vote towards Mahouka for being the worst. There are trashier shows with worse production out there, but Mahouka stands out just for how incredibly dull it is. Like, at least the upcoming Gate anime has a scene where people shoot an RPG at a dragon; Mahouka's action was extremely boring and completely devoid of tension.

So... we're doing this. Okay, I'll give it a shot:

Shows That I actually finished:
  • Kill la Kill: This one is more disappointing than actively bad, though. It breaks my heart because both the cast was really good (Ryoka Yuzuki as Satsuki was a loving revelation, Aya Suzaki as Mako was super fun and the Elite Four were loving amazing) and Imaishi's previous directorial works are amongst my favorite animes of the past decade. Here's hoping that Trigger gets back up and running (Inou Battle is okay, but nothing to write home about).
  • Psycho-Pass II: Another disappointment. I seriously hope that Mika doesn't play that big a role in the movie, because holy crap, was she an active annoyance to endure. The show, overall, just wasn't as strong as the first season and I honestly wish that they would have waited for Urobuchi to be done with Kamen Rider Gaim (even though that was cool as can be).

Nope. gently caress these shows (Most of these never got beyond the 3 episode test)
  • Mahouka Koukou no Rettousei: As most of the regulars (heh) of the Mahouka thread probably know and got tired of reading about already, I actually got familiar with this dreck thanks to a Japanese fellow who also got me the Gundam Unicorn Novels (I noticed that the OVA's have yet to be included both here and in the Best of thread, and now it's officially complete) also recommending me the books that encompass the first 2 arcs. I'm actually thankful that I got to read these novels, because it made me stop that sunk-costs idiocy that I did with a lot of my entertainment and now I can finally stop doing dumb poo poo like getting into a show and staying with it until the end despite actively disliking it. Off the anime I only watched the first four episodes, which were mind-numbingly boring and I agree with Cao Ni Ma: If you're going to have Taku motherfucking Iwasaki doing the music, you better make it count. gently caress this show.
  • Persona 4 Golden: This was actively bad. The 2 episodes that sort-of focused on Adachi were mostly okay, but pretty much everything else was garbage. Not even recommended if you're a hardcore Persona/SMT fan.
  • No Game, No Life: Somebody mentioned on the best-of thread that this was like Kaiji with panty-shots. Kaiji has moxie, swagger and pluck. This poo poo was so by the numbers that I'm not sure I can even include it on my list, since I didn't get through the 3rd episode completely.
  • Nourin: Another "Like x, but with panty shots". I heard that, since the setting was an agricultural school, that I would watch a Moyashimon-esque show. Nope. Sorry. More loving fanservice.

Haven't seen beyond one episode of Cross Ange (I know it's not on the list, but still) or the Kindaichi show. Is it safe to assume that they're both still garbage?

e: vvvv Agreed. Despite all the lovely anime still being rolled-out on schedule, there have been a lot of strong shows both in 2013 and 2014. Also, I still can't get over the fact that the Shinji in your picture has retardedly big gym-instructor arms. :xd: vvvv

Whoops I completely forgot about that. Probably would have given it an honorable mention in the Best of thread. The wait between episodes was so long that I guess I still can't believe it's over.

It was decent and I'm glad that Sunrise has learned that the OVA format can still work. Might have had it on my top 5 in a weaker year but there were just too many good things this year.

Mahouka, Terraformars, Persona 4: The Golden, Psycho Pass 2, and Knights of Sidonia are unquestionably some of the worst shows to EVER be MADE EVER (this year). Objectively terrible animation, terrible pacing, confused writing, and extremely dubious content meld to make some seriously bad garbage that for some reason people convince themselves is good. I haven't seen everything this year but I have seen a large majority of it and these were the standouts aside from the obvious poo poo like Bottom Biting Bug that doesn't even count because it has the budget of a bacon egg and cheese sandwich.

Terraformars is kinda racist, Mahouka is just... bad. I don't even know how to explain it. Persona 4: The Golden starts off as a pseudo-self-aware comedy about New Game Plus before devolving immediately into a cashgrab. Psycho-Pass 2 is just more Urobuchi writing "twists" that everyone understands and knows are coming because it's loving Urobuchi, all he does is write the same story constantly.

Knights of Sidonia looks like this:

This is also true. I think Fate is bad and it is Angel Beats level good at having an audience that thinks its the most beautiful thing ever made despite everyone having t-rex arms all the time, but it does get points for not being the trainwreck that was the DEEN Fate series.

Though it is based off of a loving porn game that people worship for whatever reason, despite actually having pretty bad/dumb writing. People just love Nasu though, I guess.

It's easier to determine what is good than what is bad because the general rule is 95% of everything released every year is absolutely unforgivable garbage so it's like, picking the bottom 5 is basically just putting a bow on a pile of poo poo.

I am shocked because I literally could not tell the difference, considering how his chops were all over season 1 and Season 2 is essentially a bad rewrite of the first season with lots of the same dumb shock value twists that scream Urobuchi. It's scary that his dumb signatures have become a genre of writing on their own to the point where derivatives feel so much like him that they're indistinguishable from the genuine product.

The first season was bad too but I mean after a certain point it all melds together because it all loving sucks.

Mahouka was so incredibly bad that I couldn't even remember the names of any single character besides Immortal Superman and Creepy Sister, and I watched and then wrote up my opinions of most of the episodes. I had to take a break in the middle because my brain literally could not tolerate anymore, but jumped back in when the nationalism ratcheted the gently caress up.

There's no contest at all. Mahouka was so aggressively bland that many entire episodes consisted of cutting between "Characters dump exposition" back and forth and then superhuman mages kill a bunch of dirty foreigners. Even worse was that the show was clearly trying to make people route for Tatsuya, but by any objective assessment he is a genocidal madman who's only kept in check by his familial love of his sister. And they tried to emphasize that his special powers came with a horrific cost yet his continued to use them effortlessly and was never shown to undergo any measure of struggle or pain.

For all the shows pandering to fan service and having similar creepy brother/sister stuff at least none of them push a horrific political agenda that is slowly starting to gain ground in real life and has some serious implications for the future of the country.
