So grats on actually filling the gaps in your team in time, Isles.

The Isles irritate me as a Stars fan AND a Leafs fan because it's like "Oh, that's what a team getting goaltending and defense can do off the rush!"

Still happy for 'em, though.

I like the Isles well enough, but I've watched the Caps collapse in the playoffs enough times to be skeptical about teams deemed The Real Deal (tm).

quote:

NBC is reporting a 2.3 overnight rating for the game between the Chicago Blackhawks and the Washington Capitals from Nationals Park in D.C., which is the lowest overnight number among the seven Winter Classics.

The previous low was the 2.4 overnight that the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Rangers earned at Citizens Bank Park in Philly. Keep in mind that game was on Jan. 2, a Monday afternoon, with a shift in starting time.

I didn't see any of the game so can't really comment on it specifically, but in general the novelty has worn off for me as it's usually pretty bad hockey with bouncy pucks.

And the non HBO "Road to the Winter Classic"... Dear lord it's like watching paint dry.

It was actually an entertaining game, good hockey. The ice wasn't terrible and the weather stayed out of the way (not too hot/cold/windy/blizzard).

I went to the one in Calgary when it was -30 and the ice was so brittle it was bad hockey.

Oh and it was held at a 50 year old lovely football stadium that was way over capacity and had maybe 3 bathrooms and I almost pissed myself so maybe there's some bias creeping in.

I kind of lost interest after the first period due to the camera work by a drunk guy and also just not being especially invested in either the Caps or Hawks enough to fight through it

Is that the Theodore wearing a tuque one? When Montreal spanked the Flames only to get spanked back the second time around?

Om nom nom
It was an awesome game, with an awesome outcome, haters gonna hate. Also the league still made a shitload of money so don't expect it to go anywhere. That said, they really didn't do enough to advertise it like they did in years past, and not 24/7 was inferior, and not as casually accessible (EPIX vs HBO) made a huge difference in draw for non-core hockey fans in my opinion.

Yotes put David Schlemko on waivers, Stars grab him. I'm assuming this is due to the fact that other than Max Fortunus the average age of our AHL defense is like, thirteen. (The 950's PDO is a good bonus, too)

It seems like Schlemko has been waived by the Coyotes a half dozen times over the last couple years and every time it happens the cry goes up on HF Boards Dallas for the Stars to claim him. Guess they got their wish.

Looking at the numbers Schlemko seems like he struggled this year for Arizona, but in the past he's had some good numbers. I think that this is in response to the Stars getting back in the playoff race, but Jokipakka and Oleksiak haven't looked very good lately. This claim allows one of them to go back to playing in the AHL full time, and the other to get some more days off in the NHL and focus on the fundamentals instead of being an every day player.

The Islanders are also in an interesting position of having a shitfuck ton of capspace and a ton of assets/prospects. They're gonna have to re-sign some guys in 2-3 years to big deals, but they are in a prime position to acquire another big player.

YOU'VE GOT A LAFRENIÈRE IN ME
The NHL is trying to establish the Winter Classic as a once per year spectacle that all kinds of fans will tune into not just fans of the two teams playing which isn't a bad idea and from my view of things it's no less interesting to watch than the first one because honestly I didn't give a poo poo about the teams involved in the first ones and I don't really give a poo poo about the Caps and Hawks but it's something interesting to watch on an afternoon

I guess I'm just saying I'm not really drawn by the "novelty" factor so much that I think once was unique and everything after that is dumb. Other people may feel differently, that's fine. What the NHL is trying to do isn't something that would be possible just by having the Winter Classic every once and awhile, it doesn't do them any good or make them significantly more money to just have it happen every 5 years or something

ThinkTank

Outdoor games are a thing for ownership mostly. They're a massive one time injection of capital in terms of ticket sales, one time advertising agreements and merchandise sales. On top of that they are generally nationally televised. The promise of an outdoor game is a bargaining chip for the league when an owner is being stubborn over something (like Leonsis was during CBA negotiations). The novelty has certainly worn off and TV ratings won't be amazing from here on out, but they still do way better than a similar game on NBC. Networks love them for that reason too as it's a good ratings boost to start their hockey coverage each year. Just like everything else in sports, the fans and the "spirit of the game" crap are the last thing anyone cares about. So long as they make money they will continue to exist.
