I never understood this name. A scallop is a fishy clam thing or something. Potato Cake makes much more sense.

Exactly! That would be like calling those fish cake things "fish scallops" and that would make little sense.

Anidav is secretly my alter ego.

Alternatively Australia and Queensland specifically have a serious job shortage and unpaid work 'for experience' is the only solution, comrade.

lol, we'll always have a job shortage until a political party of a fitting description stands up for workers and unemployed by saying the 'skills shortage' yarn big business has been peddling for years is bullshit.
Big Business will win though and call for penalty rates to die and lower wages to happen so that they can "afford" to train people.

It almost makes me want to go full blown communist and spend every day of my life protesting outside city hall.

Realtalk the Greens are absolutely not perfect and getting involved with them in any major way is going to involve a certain amount of pushing back against bad policy and dealing with bad lovely people who want bad lovely things.

The good thing is "change from within" is actually a real thing in the Greens. The state parties actually operate a democratic structure where policy and preselections are decided on by grassroots consensus decision-making. It's, again, not always perfect, but is very reactive to concerted challenges and changes in focus from within the party, and if you have a Thing, you'll have an opportunity to make your voice heard. I'll have been in the Greens NSW for two years come this April, and I'm already a fixture at the State Delegates Council, a participant in policy formulation (I'm actually technically the Acting Deputy Policy Coordinator for NSW), a candidate and a member of a reasonably important state committee (the Parliamentary Liaison Committee). If you've got the drive and the willingness to put in time and effort, you can have a lot of input into decisions and party direction.

I actually had to go look up the state Industrial Relations policy for somebody, and was struck by how good it was - a lot of the policy items were exactly the sort of thing I'd write. That's when I remembered I helped write the policy. I'm less happy with the GMO policy that I helped write, but it's important to note that, with that one, I and two other scientists at the workshop actually argued for significant concessions from where the policy was originally. Thanks to our input, it's significantly moderated from where it was, and now includes a ban on patenting organisms, promotes scientific funding into GM research and has support for the use of GM technology for the production of pharmaceuticals.
