It's a common criticism of the medical system that patients with certain types of health problems bounce around from specialist to specialist. The way to solve this is probably through better funded primary health care (more GP involvement!), as well as more acutal generalist physicians. Magic water water dispensed after $400/hour consults is not a good solution.

I thought the 30% rebate was for hospital cover only, not extras. When did that change?

Yeah it's a thing for firefighters and similar to start fires so they can go put them out. You get a case of it every few years but proportionally it's a tiny nsignificant number of them that actually go through with it. There was a case of it back during the Black Sunday fires iirc.

Actually, yeah, UWS has the people who do TCM on the same campus as the medical school.

The TCM guys are actually legit - they're proper chemists who research various things said to work in TCM to isolate the active compounds or combinations of compounds to develop into actual medicines. It's not a PhD in woo, they're just pharmaceutical chemists working within a particular body of research (one that I'm fairly sure attracts some grants regular pharma research doesn't.)

One of my friend's has a brother in law who's a chiro and he was definitely of the opinion he was one of the "good ones". I got into a bit of a scrap with him about it when he was having issues with his back (I suggested that rather than just seeing a chiro he should really consult a physio as well), but now that the brother has moved down here from Queensland he's started to realise he is "quite susceptible to quackery".

A few years ago there was a grass fire near where I was living. Three fire engines turned up to put it out and I noticed one "fireman" looked different. His helmet was actually a stackhat and his "protective suit" looked like a yellow raincoat over yellow work pants. He also arrived on a pushbike.

When the cops arrived, they took one look at this bloke and made a beeline straight for him. I wish I knew what they did with him, but at that point I was more concerned about the fire. When things had calmed down he'd vanished.

To this day, I'm certain it was him who started the fire just so he could ride up and pretend to be one of the big boys.

Door knocking isn't really about doing this. Mostly you want to get a friendly conversation going where you let people give their views on politics and what issues are important to them, partly because door knocking is about information gathering and partly because it allows you to introduce them to Greens policies that they might not have heard of before and which they might be receptive to. The aim isn't necessarily to persuade people to vote Green from a single encounter; it's more of a long-term strategy of building up interest and support and 'pushing' voters towards the Greens over successive election cycles and campaigns by creating a series positive interactions. Last time I was door knocking we used a scale out of 5 (where '1' was someone who was probably never going to vote Greens and '5' was a voting supporter) Sometimes I'd get someone who was a '4' and the conversation would push them over the line and sometimes I'd get someone who was a '2' and maybe make them a little bit more receptive towards The Greens. Of course there was the occasional '1' with deeply held Labor/Liberal/whatever convictions, but they're generally not interested in talking to door knockers and will just say 'no thank you' and let you move on. Generally though, people were pretty eager to talk and I had a bunch of great conversations, signed up some people to emailing lists, and distributed lots of campaign material. I'd really encourage anyone remotely interested in volunteering to give it a shot. :)
Oh, and doorknocking is a lot less confronting than you think since you're usually there to collect information on key issues around the electorate rather than being expected to convert them on the spot.

And he said to his mates who he gathered in that parliament

Up jumped the Liberal and grabbed it with glee

Down came electors one two three
Where's our loving budget you hid for your crooked mates

  • The Greens will lower taxes by cutting company tax for small businesses from 30 per cent to 28 per cent, a tax relief for around 600,000 Australian small businesses.
  • The tax cut will take effect from 1 July 2014 and cost $1.75 billion over the forward estimates.
  • We will raise the instant asset write off from $6,500 to $10,000 to encourage small businesses to purchase productive assets to help them grow.
  • Competition policy will be strengthened to prevent big business using their market power to gain unfair advantages over small business. View our full our full competition initiative.
  • The Small Business Commissioner will have legislative backing and double the funding to $10m to act as an effective advocate for small business. This will make it more difficult for an incoming government to abolish the post as happened in Queensland when the Newman Liberal National Party Government came to power.

I didn't see this posted yet which is weird because it's tonyabbott.txt:

quote:

Prime Minister Tony Abbott reveals he was a good sledger

As tensions between the Australian and Indian cricket teams reach boiling point, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has revealed sledging was his only strength as a cricketer.

Speaking at an afternoon tea for the teams at Kirribilli House in Sydney on Thursday, Mr Abbott spoke of his time as a cricketer during his student days at Oxford University.

"I couldn't bat, I couldn't bowl, I couldn't field, but I could sledge, and I think I held my place in the team on this basis, and I promise there'll be none of that today," said the former captain of Oxford's Middle Common Room team of the Queen's College.

Emotions are riding high between the Australian and Indian sides following an explosive series that has featured plenty of sledging.

It's feared things could get worse during next week's fourth and final Test at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

Mr Abbott weighed into the debate over Australian captain Steven Smith's decision to delay the declaration in the third Test at the MCG as the hosts failed to take the remaining four wickets to win the match and take a 3-0 series lead.

The home side had to settle for a draw, but still reclaimed the Border-Gavaskar Trophy with an unassailable 2-0 in the four-match series.

"When I told people last night that I was lucky enough to be hosting the Australian and the Indian cricket teams here today, the only question that they assailed me with was `What did you think of the declaration?'," Mr Abbott said.

"My initial thought was it was none of my business. My further thought was that Steven Smith did absolutely his duty, because it is his duty to put Australia in the strongest possible position because, as India's batsmen have repeatedly demonstrated this summer, you can never take India for granted."

Have you tried talking to an orgs. like small bushiness Australia. . At the end of the day the org. will almost certainly support the libs, if not for anything else but out of habit, but if you send them something they can republish about how small business are currently getting currently getting screwed over -maybe referencing Hockey not cracking down on international business tax rorts -leading to small business being massively disadvantageous due to actually needing to add the tax they tax they pay to their goods and services- They may publish that sort of thing. Also sending through a graphic with the positions the greens polices supporting small business vs the other major parties may be something they would print, if nothing else to try and pressure the other major parties to adopt similar stances. But at the end of the day even if they weren't meaning to give support people are going to see it. Hell just chucking a comparison like that up on Facebook/twitter may be a good start. The one media avenue the greens can really compete with labour/lib is in social media as you don't need money just passionate people.

Also just write a poo poo load of letters to places like the herald sun (you know newspapers people still read). If you want letters published its always best to write them in response to an article or another letter. Also keep them short and funny if possible (particularly with a more tabloid joint like the Herald Sun.)

Its actually not that hard to get published like that. At one point my mom and dad had a competition between themselves who could get published more in a month. My dad got three in the age, my mom one in the herald sun. She still claims she won as more people read it.

Anyway this was probably far to long a reply to what was most likely a rhetorical question.
