Hey, I'm still alive. Just been busy with exams, and I'm going to heading off in a bit. I have an update, very close to completion. In the meanwhile, if anyone has any questions about MRA2 that they want answered, I can try answering them before I leave in about 4 hours.

Can we recycle this monster into a better one?

Mysticblade

Eventually, yes. Fred will become a piece of something much better.

Fred impresses someone!

Even though the INT boost from last update is enough for Fred to take on the E-rank tournament, it's not for a while.

I thought we had enough INT for now and that we needed ACC.

That's probably going to be enough ACC to work in D rank.

Since the last time I tried to do the E-rank tournament, Fred got 3 shot, I figured some defensive training would help.

More than enough for E rank but might be shaky in D.

We only had a week left until the Tournament and going into a tourny with a tired monster results in stat drops.

I will definitely be needing stronger coaches if basic training is doing as much as advanced.

Anyway, E rank promotion tournament is a go.

We weren't strong enough for the last one, but now we're over prepared.

Mochi's aren't very hard to take down.

This Mew KO'ed us last time. This time, we're slightly stronger than a piece of paper so we survive.

This one Naga is a lot more dangerous that most of the monsters in this tournament. Good POW and ACC combined with moves that don't have E rank damage. Moot point for us though.

Arrowheads are always irritatingly tanky. Good DEF + traits that reduce damage can be annoying.

Witness Fred Durst's mighty Pokorin attack.

Good thing we have something that does more damage.

Then the AI decides to try and counter and gets KO'ed for it.

Ooh, a Pixie. Easy if you can hit them since they take tons of damage, hard if can't since they're pretty dodgy and hurt.

We can hit her.

After much delay, we finally win the E rank Tournament. :toot:

Promo tournament's give a ton of fame. Pity it doesn't do much.

We'll be getting more points from winning tournament's now. Higher ranked tournaments give more rewards in every way.

I let him be happy.

This officially means we're out of garbage tier, but still with the rest.

Say hello to this rear end in a top hat.

This game was rated E for everyone. I learned that today.

Holly gets mad and drags us into a battle with this dude. Yep, we're not winning this one.

Figured you guys might want to take a look at a Durahan. They're neat but we won't be able to get one for a while.

I don't have control over Fred for this fight. We're meant to lose.

Not sure if I've ever actually dealt any damage in this fight. Probably not.

Eventually, he pulls out a move with actual power...

His monster is probably around a rough C - rank level, I want to say?

If we somehow won this fight, we'd lose the rest of the plot. Not really a big loss.

...I didn't really feel like making a portrait for this.

Hey, new facial expression. This one was hard to capture. Looks weird in a still.

Jackass over here is somehow impressed. "Oh look, it didn't die in one hit. Most impressive."

Yeah, I'm wondering what's up with him as well.

Fred, he complimented you.

Ooh, neat. This is plot important.

Holly decides that she's going to take down this punk at some point.

We ain't seeing him for a long time. And that Flare Orb is going to be sitting around for a bit as well.

Since I didn't write down the dialogue word for word, I skipped over a lot of ellipses.

And that's it for an update.

Now, we need a new training schedule.

Decide what needs to hit the next level. Some kind of format like STAT Ax2/STAT B/STAT C would be appreciated for collecting votes.

Durahan? Seriously? Did they seriously misromanize Dullahan?

Also yay, Fred finally won! And we meet the dick rival that all games must have, I guess. I can't wait for Fred/Fred's successors to break his teeth.

Stat-wise, I don't care about the rest but keep increasing Int. Become the strongest, Fred. Nothing can kill you if you kill them first.

One giant flaw in the Monster Rancher games: You almost never see the AI attack for the first few seconds of a bout. So you can really cheese the game by pumping offence at the total expense of defence, and focus on spamming out an OHKO attack as soon as the match starts.

My favourite way to play Monster Rancher Advance (1) is with a house rule whereby I can't attack at all until the opponent has attacked once. This also bypasses the early game abuse of throwing out one attack to get ahead on the Guts Expended judging criterion, then hanging out at a range in which the enemy has no move set.

Durahan is a mistranslation, I'm fairly certain. They're called Durahan's in game so I just stick with it for this.

Also, Sorites, I do know what you're talking about. I used to enjoy 999 POW Golems that could finish a fight in one hit.

Doesn't the McGuffin actually have an effect on your monster once you get it? If I remember correctly, the blurb on it says something about making your monster work harder.

They've been Durahans in every single Monster Rancher related thing ever. Presumably they mistranslated it in the first game (along with the rest of the entire script, basically) and just kept it as-is.

Fred's New Friend?

Howdy, back after exams. Sorry about going missing for so long.

Anyway, getting back on track, what I interpreted from that vote was more INT. And maybe some LIF.

So we did some heavy INT training. Unfortunately, I didn't realise that there was INT/LIF training. Whoops.

Fred's yet to fail this. Might be working for him.

Great performances in training give higher stat boosts.

You also get the option to praise them or ignore them. Since he's doing well and the eventual plan for him is to farm tournaments for money, I'll see whether I can push him a little back towards spoiled.

Next month rolls over and an event triggers.

This bloke will come visit you sometime after reaching D-rank with your first monster.

That sums it up, really.

We do some more training...

Here's the second part of the event.

Yep, he's going to try and sell us a coach.

Nah, Masimaro who is our only coach at the moment is some hot garbage. 300's in all stats? That's going to get us nowhere.

Hmm.

Never really noticed but he comes off shady as hell in this scene.

Eh. If we're getting a coach shoved on us, may as well take a look.

Better but it ain't end-game worthy. Going to need to be replaced at some point but for now he's stronger at training POW/DEF/LIF than the current goober.

Not really useful at the moment since Fred is an INT monster but he'll be useful later.

Also, as an apology, have some interesting traits from a MRA2 run on my phone. Pardon the quality.

Expert makes them better at training but it'll cause them stress if they fail. Popular means they get fame faster. Expert is nice and you can easily start off the game with a monster that has expert, but Popular's a bit weird to get. You need to get promoted early enough to gain the trait and it just disappears at some point. Good thing it isn't really important.

Poor guy. If I remember correctly, Failure drops all your monsters stats by 30 in battle. It's a painful penalty that I'm glad Fred doesn't have.

I decided to read through the LP so far and I'm surprised that the game is using the classic Monster icons from MR2. That's actually a nice touch.

Yo, we're back. I never die, I just disappear. For weeks on end.

We're just getting some training done again until the next tournament.

Strong's actually fairly good at training early monsters, but he's for STR/DEF mon's, not whatever Fred is.

Yes, advanced training and sparring can pass down traits from the coach. In this case, it's more like afflict, since most of Strong's traits are terrible. It's a lot nicer when you're passing down Hi traits.

Then this jackass pops up. Say hello to our first rival.

Holly's irritated already. Off to a great start, stranger.

:You are the "amazing rookies" that everyone's been talking about? The ones that fought that wandering rogue breeder?

"amazing rookies", huh?

: You mean Canute?

: Who cares about his name? All I wanna know is...

: What?

: Whaat?

: I'm Hunter. I plan on being Age's No.1 breeder someday.

pfft

: "Holly," right? Didn't you used to be a famous breeder? I bet you helped Geop get a leg up...

: Ha ha ha!

: It's not funny!

: As if you should talk! What's with all these pushy people lately? Don't you think it's strange, Geop?

: Ha ha ha!

: Enough of this nonsense! I came for one thing only!

Technically we get an option to fight or not, but I'll take this moment and say "yes".

Yes, this what we'll likely be facing at the D-rank Invitationals.

Fred is tired but it still ends in a KO. Missed a photo of the finish though.

Skipping ahead to the Invitational after some training...

: And you're not exactly quaking in your boots.

: It has nothing to do with you. We'll do this at our own pace! But we'll settle this like we promised.

: That's right. This tournament will decide things once and for all.

Hey, it's only been a few... weeks? Time sure flies in this game.

That's the hard part!

Ugh. Enemies are starting to specialise to an extent. What that means is that they'll hit a basic stat floor in every stat except for their main stats which'll be higher.

Fairies can hit fairly hard. Life Steal is an INT-move that has good damage and heals her for a certain amount of the damage dealt.

Luckily, Fred has enough INT to over-charge his shots.

Costs her 34 for a chance to hit hard and heal, costs me 10 to hit hard. Low guts moves are technically the easiest way to win battles.

I still don't know what Mochi's specialise in.

Never really bothered since I don't like them too much.

These doofy guys are Mogi's. My very first monster was a Mogi.

They have access to the "Addle" effect which makes it harder to attack. Irritating enough.

Golems! I love Golems.

They have good one-shot potential with good POW and high damage moves.

Take a look at that picture. Hunter has won all of his battles. That's a thing about other plot important characters in tournaments. They'll win all their battles.

His stats have generally gone up. Except for his INT which dropped a point.

He's not smart enough to fight off Fred any more. Bad choice, Hunter.

:toot:

After the tournament rewards, Hunter approaches us for a little chat.

: I see. Now I truly understand you.

: Satisfied?

: Yeah. But you'd better prepare yourselves next time! I'm going to be zooming way past you in rank! Start slacking off and I'll be on your tail!

: Ok, we'll be waiting.

: I don't think we've seen the last of him...

Sure, good job, Fred.

Later on, we recieve some mail.

Breeder Level 2 = Rank C. Breeder Level's don't really come up much, so I don't expect people to memorise them.

Gavin then mentions a new Tournament.

Death Blow is a special tournament that requires winning certain tournaments in your rank bracket. Once you win two of them, you'll recieve an invitation when the next Death Blow tournament comes up.

Death Blow is a tournament where the time is set to infinity. You fight until a monster is knocked out. I'd like it but it's rare to get into it while jumping through the ranks.

The next day, we get more interruptions! Should've split this up into two but...

Hello Aroma. She's run to us to hide because she's trying to hook up her brother with the chick who delivers mail. Very riveting storyline. Relevant because...

Yeah, this is a new mechanic.

Yes. Are you doing that on purpose?

Alright, I wanted to do a separate post for the new mechanic so I'll summarise the next bit as...

We fought the bunny and then Fred became friends with it.

This update has gone on for longer than any previous posts, so I'll cut it there. I'll attach the question of where we're going next with the Soulmate post so hang tight.
