Oh, clever. Mountaineer posted:I've never actually used Safana before. Will she leave the party if I don't go after the treasure? It'll be a while before I'm ready to deal with Sirines and Flesh Golems to get there. Yes, she will, but this isn't as difficult as you're making it out to be. Jaheira starts with a potion of invisibility. Stealth into the cave (presumably with Safana), go to the treasure trove, loot it, and then drink the invis potion and leave. Don't need to fight anything at all.

Death by vindictive weather is amazing. Anyway, I have to start a new run. My kensai died vs. Mulahey since he got his Hold Person off and froze both the kensai and Kagain. We'll see what I end up choosing. I want to play something where leveling up actually makes a difference, which either means a spellcaster, monk, swashbuckler, archer, or kensai.

I'm not posting anything until I hit level 3 because other than my Mulahey death, my next 2 characters (mages) got killed in a 6-bandit random encounter on the way to the FAI. Even when you have 12 HP thanks to your familiar, 6 bandits with 2 attacks per round will murder you and your 6 AC before you can get off the screen. Trying a halfling kensai this time around but no screenshots until she gets some HP under her belt.

I really think it's unfair to give a "demerit" or whatever for max HP rolls on level up. If you were playing BG1 only, then fine. But pretty much every single NPC in BG2 joins with max HP, and the game is designed around your fighters having shitloads of health. If anything, there should be an award for finishing WITH random rolls, but the default should be with max HP. Anyway, I had no idea how easy Nimbul was if you buy the shield amulet. You can literally just cast "resist fear" on yourself, pop shield, and stand there while he burns all his magic missiles on you.

She casts Rigid Thinking. That's who zapped Khalid and caused him to reenact Captain Brage. Dual your swashbuckler at 10. Bonuses are every 5 levels, and the bonus 1ac you get at level 1 is a separate class benefit altogether. The first hit, damage, and AC bonus happens at 5.

Halfling kensai bit off more than she could chew vs. Sendai and company. Couldn't even get away. What the hell is their Thac0? They were hitting me with a -8 AC thanks to a potion of defense.

The spirit animals gain new abilities and stats a levels 1, 3, 5, 7, and 10. Immunity to normal weapons doesn't happen until 10. I think the wolf gets level drain or something at 10, too.

Taking it nice and easy with a halfling Cleric of Helm. Here's what I've done: 1.) Reached level 4 without dying (yay!) 2.) Rescued Dynaheir 3.) Cleared the Nashkel Mines 4.) Had this happen when casting armor FROM A SCROLL; jesus christ you've gotta be insane playing a wild mage. So far, so good though. Gonna go to High Hedge, pick up Kivan, and take on the Bandit Camp.

But I haven't entered the Cloakwood yet since I'm trying to hit level 6 before heading that way. Plus it'll get me the gold I need for shadow leather and a suit of full plate for Yeslick. Granted, it only takes one fuckup, but I am quite confident in this run now that I'm off the ground. Wearing the Claw of Kazgaroth with halfling saving throws means I'm already saving against most everything. And the best part is that clerics of helm are neutral so I can grab dorn and...I dunno...Branwen or something...after Cloakwood and do his quest. Never done Rasaad's, though, hopefully that doesn't gently caress me. Neeras final fight probably would have been really hard if not for the true seeing the helm kit gets.

You can't make a fighter/thief with 20 dex and three pips in longbows You can't have a character with 20 con who regenerates, thus bypassing one of the early game's biggest issues You can't make a specialist Mage with an extra three spells per level All of those are probably far more game breaking than the glass cannon that is Dorn. (Aerie is illegal too, as is haer'dalis)

Cloakwood Mines finished without much issue. Was more concerned about the 3rd floor mage than anything else, since her lightning bolt can travel down those narrow corridors pretty quick. But Coran saw to that. Before Davaeorn could so much as make his first Dimension Door he was badly wounded and poisoned. Somehow he got off a lightning bolt which frightened me a little bit, but it turns out he was more of a danger to Team Bad Guys than to my party (though Minsc did get hit, I guess). I think it's time I do Dorn's quest, so I'll have to boot my good guys out at the Friendly Arm.

Bort Bortles posted:Who was posting about using skeletons all the time earlier in the thread? What class do you need to be do that? Clerics get Animate Dead at level 5 (spell level 3). BGEE changed how it works vs. BG1 proper. You used to get like 4-6 lovely skeletons like the ones that jump you outside of High Hedge. Now you get 1-2 skeletons that get stronger as you level. I've not played BG2EE so I have no idea if you get a proper skeleton warrior at level 15, but at level 7 I think you get a 5 or 7 HD skeleton wielding a magical sword. They last forever (you'll actually need to murder them when you leave an area lest you get hosed up on the summon cap in subsequent areas), are super resistant to missiles, and immune to the debilitating effects the game likes to throw at you--namely fear and hold and poison. They're not going to do you any good in a pitched battle, but they're great for exploring.

Mountaineer posted:Clerics and mages/sorcerers can cast Animate Dead as a 3rd level spell, though for mages I don't know where you can find a scroll for it in BG1. I've made great use of them in my evil run. Edwin casts Stinking Cloud at the enemy while Viconia summons skeletons to run in and murder the unconscious enemies. Skeletons are immune to saves vs. death, you see. Mages don't get it until spell level 5, where you barely get any spell slots (Edwin excluded b/c he's absurd, obviously) and you should be using them for much cooler poo poo like Chaos. Speaking of: at this point barring catastrophe vs. the Aec'Lectec I'm pretty sure I'll make it to BG2. Is there any reason at all to not have my neutral cleric of helm party up with evil dudes? Other than Mazzy, I can't think of a single good-aligned person I'd want.

I'm going to keep playing this file as an Ironman attempt; if anyone disagrees with this please speak up. You absolutely can reload from that. When BGT first came out there was a bug where the Sirine that kills a party member would always kill the hero even if he wasn't the one who initiated dialogue (or perhaps it was just whoever was party leader; I dunno). Regardless, you can be drat sure I cheated in the Helm of whatever (defense?). Don't let bugs get in the way of your playthrough. Also, because I am a completionist whose OCD demands clearance of all fog of war in the game, I will of course be entering the Firewine Ruins next. Should be trivial at this point; my whole group is 5-6 and I'm really just dicking around to get Coran's traps skill up to snuff so I can tackle Durlag's before I even head into Baldur's Gate. Something I've thought about, but never done: there's a not-well-known item you can get if you have the Idol of Kozah (I do) and...the broken armor (I'm about to): The Vampiric Longsword. Ulcaster gives it to you, but it heals the target and damages the attacker. Kagain with Buckley's Buckler would have 21 con (he regenerates at 20 already, but 21 would make it go faster) and could just be turned into a healing battery. He'd be totally useless otherwise, but given how limited the healing options in BG1 are, that might actually be a reasonable use. Anybody done it?

Alright, if we're summarizing: 1.) A bunch of my guys died before reaching level 3 and aren't worth mentioning (because I can't even keep them straight) 2.) Mazus the Halfling Cleric of Helm has cleared the Cloakwood Mines and is currently loving around in the countryside with what'll be my final party. Trying to hit level 7 on my warriors (Minsc/Kivan/Coran/Yeslick) and just as importantly get Coran's Find Traps to a Durlag's-Acceptable level if he drinks a potion of insight.

Firewine Ruins down! Kivan stealthed and then nuked about 15 kobold commandos with the necklace of missiles. I actually got an 80 stack of fire arrows +2 out of this dungeon. That's pretty helpful! Coran, with a potion of insight and a potion of master thievery, has 100 pick pockets. Which I guess either isn't enough, or they took away the longbow of marksmanship that one of these dudes used to have. I also accidentally initiated dialogue with one later, and it took the ancient armor and disappeared, so any hope of getting the vampire sword went away I then headed over to do the tome of constitution stuff. With the Cleric of Helm's true sight kit ability, sirines are a cake walk. Plus I poisoned all of them with Coran and Kivan's arrows of biting. And Minsc berserked just in case. I was actually far more worried about the lightning, and while it didn't hurt me that badly, it DID killsteal 2k xp from me The cave itself was easy. Flesh golems have no missile resistance, and Coran and Kivan tend to melt everything in their path. They melt things SO well that I had to be careful not to kill Shoal by accident. Timed it right, though, and got Yeslick back and the Gift of Peace helmet. That goes right on my main. ...who looks like this right now. Still haven't set foot in BG yet. I guess I'll go do the basilisk area and the ankheg farm. That should be enough for a level, at which point I'll do a quick jump over to the FAI to pick up Neera and Dorn, grab Branwen from the circus, and quickly do Dorn's quest.

Suspicious posted:So I went to fight Aec'letec (the demon in the dagger) and killed all the cultists in the room before focusing on him so he wouldn't reincarnate. I brought him down to near death status fairly quickly, but he stayed there for at least 2 minutes while I kited him with a decoy who chain quaffed potions to stay alive. I checked the battle log and I was doing considerable damage to him. Kivan alone was doing 30ish damage per round so I don't know what was going on. I know he spams vampiric touch but it couldn't have been healing him for that much. I think this is the first time this happened to me. Has it happened to anyone else? Google doesn't turn up anything. I don't know what to do. I'm using Tutu. That happened to me once years ago. I solved it, but I can't remember how. As it was explained to me, it's the same sort of problem that trolls in BG2 have, where their "I keep getting hit" animation interferes with their "I've taken enough damage that I should collapse now" scripting. In any event, I'd count it as a kill and move on.
