Yes, and because of this, the second season of Spartacus is a prequel that doesn't feature the character at all, but is still a wicked cool show. Season 3 picks the story back up with a new actor.

To be fair, the first episode is the only one that occurs before Spartacus is a slave. As such, it can be seen as a memory of better times - a self-myth of the past. As such, it was filmed almost as a dream sequence. Every subsequent episode has a far different style.

One of the best TV shows I've ever seen, and fairly accurate historically speaking to boot. Incredible. I really liked the neat twist on the "I AM SPARTACUS" meme, in that we never learn the real name of the main character, a fact referenced directly in his dying speech. Also, many people bitch about the first episode, but it is beautiful. Witness the scene of naked Sura pulled from the hero's arms, referenced several times in the final episodes. It looks like a painting.

The first seasons are very tight, focused on the ludus and the characters all revolve around it. The last two seasons are far more expansive and the nature of the story is very different. It's a change, and many people don't like change. I really enjoyed watching a somewhat accurate historical portrayal of the 3rd Servile war, with lots of titties and ultra-violence.

Maybe as someone mentioned above you didn't "get" that the show is intentionally cheesy and over the top, as well as lots of other things.
