I kid; it's actually really nice and not depressing at all. Beautiful waterfalls! Hirsute horses! Mossy lava fields! Beautiful sexy things! Battling horses! Road side "sausage coffins!" It has everything but tall buildings and healthy topsoil. Kumo posted:the app on my phone says it's ok to gently caress

Iceland is actually not that small in size compared to most European countries but like 60% of the country is totally inhabitable wasteland. It's just barely populated. Before 1900 or so Iceland was basically 100% rural and people who didn't own or rent land had to work for someone that did and couldn't get married and having children out of wedlock was a serious crime. This was done to make sure the wealthy landowning elite always had a steady supply of workers and to make sure those workers didn't try to form any villages by the sea and live of fish like barbarians. This meant that for a centuries the population growth was stagnated. It didn't help that basically every 25 years or so a epidemic of some sort would come around and kill off at least a quarter of the population. Basically it was a really bad idea to settle in Iceland.

FreudianSlippers posted:Basically it was a really bad idea to settle in Iceland. I'd love to see them make a serious run at hydroponics/in-door farming. Specialized LED growlamps have finally pushed it into commercial viability for high-margin markets and the main on-going cost is electricity. Icelandic food's already expensive and their electricity's famously cheap. They're terrifically suited.

in Reykjavik, there are no hot water heaters. You get hot water straight from hell. Just decades ago they didn't actually regulate the temperature so now and then people would scald themselves in the shower

Was there over the summer, pretty beautiful place, especially the North. But holy hell is it expensive, especially the car rentals. Like, two grand for a lovely Yaris for a week. Ended spending nine days in a '99 Chevy Astro literally held together with duct tape (and it still cost over two grand). Windshield wipers catapulted off the car in the first storm. Buttons would just push into the dash to never be seen again. Every time you hit the brakes the car would abruptly pull to the left or right but you didn't know which until you hit the brakes, which also sucked. Cost around $200 USD to fill the tank to boot because gas is crazy. Never rent from 'Cheap Jeep' unless you like pure terror. Basically unless you poo poo money go in a large group to split costs. Also you better like hot dogs because sometimes the only food for a hundred miles is a gas station hot dog stand. They make 'em pretty tasty though.
