MY TREEEEEEEE!
He could look them up himself if he wanted. I am not going to give him addresses or anything, he just wanted to hear how they are for the most part. But yeah, I'll keep that in mind.

Blacks in the back.
WTF, I just looked up a guy I used to hang with in high school who went bad into drugs, caught three Grand Theft Autos in 7 months (how is this possible, after the 2nd how do you get out again?) and he is not even in prison. These crimes were like 2 years ago. I was thinking about writing him a letter because of this thread but I guess not.

Yes, great narrative about those barbarians being locked up.

somebody please get Windows 98 to make a thread to post his concerns/feels about his imminent prison incarceration for attempted murder, get it locked once he's sentenced in a few months, and then unlock it on his release day in 2-3 years

I am kind of curious about taxes and creative types who may still be able to do work with the outside world, like selling art or writing.

Any info on this? Could I commission/contract paid work from a prisoner and would there be additional tax issues beyond mailing them a 1099 at the end of the year?

Probably committed all three in short order, got caught for one of them and they didn't link the other two to him until after he'd already been put away some months later.

MY TREEEEEEEE!
In the case of my old friend I wrote to, a buddy of his kidnapped a girl, ran her over and I think stabbed her. She lived. My friend was along for the ride and didn't do anything to stop him, but didn't actually harm her, which I guess is why he got off with only twelve years. So, yes, I guess some caution would be in order when dealing with the guy. I think I will continue to write him, though.

You know that is a great question. I know there were guys in there who did arts and crafts that they sold to people on the outside. I never once thought to ask how the taxes worked. I know you had to go through some approval process with the warden and the recreation specialist so I'm sure that issue came up. There was one guy in there with me who was on like year 27 of a 35 year meth sentence. He had been working in the leather shop almost the entire time and produced some absolutely amazing quality stuff. I mean some of the best leatherwork I have ever seen in my entire life. I know he was making tons of money off it, too. People would commission him to do things like luggage, briefcases, riding saddles...all sorts of poo poo. He wasn't cheap either, a lot of his work went for over a grand. I don't know how he managed to put that business together, I wish I had asked.

A lot of times when guys who weren't officially allowed to sell their art would have something commissioned they would have the customer on the outside put money on to their books and then ship the art piece out to a relative who would in turn ship it to the customer. It was amazing how many talented artists and musicians I was locked up with. In fact I was locked up with the bassist from a very popular early-2000's band. Him and I actually played together in a prison yard band until his dumb-rear end got sent to the SHU for cigarettes.

You totally should continue to write him if you can. The reason he is asking about all those old friends and such likely isn't because he wants to hunt them down but because hearing about them ties him to the outside world. I would always ask my friends that I called or wrote to how all these people I hadn't spoken to in years were doing. It just keeps you grounded, makes you happy and reminds you that there is a world outside of the walls that you can be a part of again someday. As for whether or not you should keep up with him when he gets out that's totally up to you; that crime is pretty heinous. Just be a friend to him while he is in if you can. Then again maybe he is using you for an update on his long list of real and imagined enemies so that heads will roll when he gets out I dunno

I wouldn't call them well known. I had to look them up and I've never heard any of their songs. That aside he was in prison for real estate fraud, how rock n' roll :mmmhmm:

I guess they were well-known if you were a teenager in the early 2000s? I think they were basically responsible for kicking off that whole horrible screamo scene in the early part of last decade. I knew exactly who he was when he showed up. I didn't listen to their music, my friends did, I swear. Yeah real-estate fraud is not a very rock-and-roll crime at all, not nearly as good as that one dude from Coheed and Cambria I think that tried to rob a pharmacy for oxy with a fake bomb or something like that.

he told a much different story while drunk on tinychat about him intentionally driving into a car containing his ex, roommate, and someone else in it on purpose b/c she broke his heart

For the ex-prisoners itt: Have any crazy knife fight stories involving plastic utensils? I'm assuming you eat with plastic utensils in prison.
