The Enteroctopus dofleini, also known as the giant Pacific octopus (GPO) or North Pacific giant octopus, is a large marine cephalopod belonging to the phylum Mollusca and is tripping balls.

Proper swords are pretty expensive and time consuming to make. A polearm requires a lot less metal, a lot less work and has a lot more reach.

For a long time swords were mostly a thing for nobles and in some places it was even illegal for commoners to carry a sword. Swords of course became more common as time went on. By the late middle ages a lot of commoners in what is now Germany carried messers. A messer literally means knife but it's is basically a sword. To get around not being allowed to carry swords they carried swords but didn't call them swords.

Swords in most of Europe and Japan were a status symbol and personal defence thing. Most places wouldn't let you carry around a weapon, but in Japan or the HRE noble men could carry their swords for self defence. Pretty much everywhere it was illegal for a commoner to carry around anything that wasn't obviously a tool, like a knife, or used for hunting, like a bow. That makes a lot of sense because a gathering of poor people with weapons of war would be something most rulers would like to avoid. There is lots of wiggle room here though. Mercenaries carried their weapons, but no local lord wanted the hurt that pissing off a mercenary captain would bring if they started to arrest his bros.

It's a question of what type of sword you're facing, and the type of sword that you're facing is dictated by what armor it will be facing. For example swords from the viking or early feudal periods tend to have a rounded tip and be double-edged, primarily used as slashing/hacking weapons. Chainmail is a pretty reasonable protection against this, but it's less good against direct thrusting weapons (wearing a thick padded coat under one's chainmail however is a surprisingly good impact absorber against arrows). As the amount of plate armor worn slowly increased from the late thirteenth century, the older style of knight's sword became obsolete. Later medieval swords like the Estoc have a pointed tip specifically to punch through the gaps in a suit of plate. Stilletto type knives were also commonly used for this purpose, making grappling an important part of one on one combat between knights on the battlefield.

e: Like a real fight to the death between two 15th-century knights is basically either they try to beat each other to death with the hilt of their swords or they grapple until one guy gets a judo move on the other and puts him on the ground, then shoves a knife under the edge of his helmet. It's pretty lame and gay compared to anime IMO.

Yeah despite thw popular image of technological stagnancy medieval weapons actually changed constantly, especially during wartime, to suit various trends in armor and other stuff in war

Like often you can narrow down when and where a sword was made based just on shape due to the constant change without even having to look at metallurgy or more technical forensic stuff

a sword has high dps but you need a weapon with high dam to pierce plate armor some kind of hammer or weighted spike

katanas were a garbage sword, japs just liked to hype their metallurgy because it took a lot of skill and blood magic to turn their poo poo tier iron into a blade that doesn't shatter when you stare at it funny. that's why they used, lol, paper armor.

This is pretty much the case. Gladiators were extremely valuable to their owners and typically only did a few fights a year. Gladiators themselves earned a lot of money and got a lot of pussy.

Venice was like, the first medieval state to employ what we would consider a professional marine corps including armored longbowmen, their galley rowers were actually highly honored volunteers, and their knights were famous across Europe for their swag style. Byzantine fans can sip their drat hatorade. :colbert:

Pointed footwear can help you get in/out of a stirrup more easily I guess? I don't really know, pointy shoes tend to be a sign of class and style wherever you go though, the 1990s and the brief popularity of roundtoe shoes being an exception

Lets be clear. No one gets into history as a kid because of the suffering of the proletariat. People get into history because of awesome knights and baller horse archers and poo poo. Later you read Wealth of Nations and Das Kapital, but nothing is as cool as two dudes in armor wailing on each other.
