Several of the people who come on the shows turn out to be trying to resell something they actually bought off someone else but they present themselves as having come up with it all on their own. Sometimes the hosts wring it out of them and it turns out some inventor in Europe actually came up with it all and they just paid $XXXXX for the North American rights and other times it comes up during the off-screen due diligence part so on the show it looks like a success but then it goes nowhere.

They asked the Zipz guy this exact question and yeah, it turns out that the patent on the single serve wine glass belongs to some dude in France.

Pitch is a dating site that is spending exactly as much money as its making, because they're buying users. They made 1M and spent 1M, and are on track to make 10M and spend 10M. (While paying themselves 6-figure salaries)

Mark Cuban says "I'm out" in the opening pitch because they won't even tell him how many users they have, on principle.

Later in the pitch he asks them "Would you sell the entire company for 30M?", which I figure is just him testing the waters to see what they think the company is worth, but the show announcer treats it as a serious offer.

They turn down 30M and walk. :ohdear:

Yeah, if I ever invented a thing and went on that show, I'd just straight up say from the beginning - yo, I'll work with anyone but Kevin. I don't even want to hear his offers because they're utterly worthless each time and he's obsessed with taking a percentage of sold units into perpetuity. Which is pretty awful for 90% of the people he offers it to.

There's been some pretty horrible deals made without Kevin's influence (the Hill Billy one seemed pretty lovely to me), but yeah, overall, he's the biggest dickhead about it.

Also, I couldn't possibly give less of a gently caress about business and finance, and, really, I can't believe how addicting this show is for precisely that reason. Maybe because it's ~actual omg reality~ and doesn't look nearly as scripted as everything else on TV does (since it seems like it's real money and real arguments).

I've been surfing around, but does anyone have some suggestions for the best fights between the Sharks/Dragons themselves? I'm new to this, ferreting them out could take a while.

Wow, this might be the quickest to lose all 5 sharks I've ever seen. Anything faster than that?

Also, I love when people go on with a lovely product, then halfway through the sharks questions they do a 180 to try and "sell the brand" which is equally lovely. Bonus points if they are a company trying to sell the brand but will only let the sharks in on the product they're pitching, not the various other products and projects they are working on, so they'll be using the sharks time, money, and resources for stuff the sharks will never get a return on.

I don't think the sharks would get into the gag gift business unless there were proven sales. Like they said, it's not really a sustainable market. Then again, I don't think the guy thought it was a gag gift and thought he was solving a major problem.

It's beautiful to watch. I want to say he even got the best of Kevin, by only parting with 17.5% of his company to Kevin himself. And having Daymond there to keep Kevin on a leash it's like the benefits of Kevin's sliminess without letting him have enough control to gently caress you.

I actually got gifted one of these for christmas last year and It works pretty well.

But he's absolutely insane for going for a 3M valuation. In fact most of the people pitching to sharks would probably do a lot better by reducing the hell out of their valuations.

Well, there's the rule that you have to get all the money you ask for.

So if you want room to negotiate, you need to ask for the money you want, but lowball the percent of the company you're willing to sell. Resulting in a high valuation.

Cake Attack
Mar 26, 2010

Yeah its kind of a weird design thing since it encourages people to lowball percentages. Like one time a guy got a deal for 5% and afterwards said he was expecting to be haggled to 30 or 40

Can someone explain to me the subtleties between equity vs. royalty? I'm guessing by the mere fact that Kevin keeps asking for royalties that it is the worse deal of the two. Also, I don't think I've ever seen any of these "update" segments with Kevin as the shark. He basically seems like a really shady bank on the show since he seems to have no interest in helping the actual business besides maximizing its profits.

I'm not a business/finance anything, and I probably only know this from watching Dragons' Den, but equity is when you literally buy a part of the company. That means you have a say in the operations and, say if the company is later sold off, you get a share of what it's sold for. You're a partner in the company, basically. If the equity is for more than 50%, then you're a majority shareholder, which means you technically control the company. The sharks/dragons like doing this if they like a product/company, but don't trust the entrepreneur to not gently caress everything up.

Royalty doesn't give you any share of the company. You're just getting some amount of money for every product sold. So say you make a deal with some guy selling a gadget, and you say you want a royalty of $1, you are literally getting $1 out of the revenue of each gadget that's been sold. This can either be done over a set period of time, or in perpetuity (forever).

So yeah, it makes sense that Kevin tends to prefer royalty deals. It doesn't really involve so much interaction/work with the entrepreneur, and he has a better shot at getting his money back/making more money.

I liked "we know people and we know relationships!" They got married 6 weeks after their first blind date and apparently quibble so often they need an elephant to air their disagreements. Yep, totally trusting them.

Also $22 just to manufacture one, and mostly because of cost of the box? You could go to the dollar store, buy a bunch of elephants, buy a bunch of some other product that comes in a plastic box, repackage, and still come out cheaper. My mind's blown at that one; good find, Zaphod!
