My understanding is that the attackers wanted to kill people because they were young, twisted by extremist teachings and Muslims are treated with a lot of xenophobia in France. Charlie Hedbo had spent much of the preceding years drawing elaborate mocking "kill me" signs that were racially infllammatory.
