I'm a 30 something now, and although I really liked Sonic The Hedgehog games as a kid/teenager, they don't seem that great anymore. Actually they are pretty much poo poo. At least the old ones, but I've heard bad things about the new ones too.

I've come to realization when I decided to play some Sonic 2 on my Wii's virtual console. The graphics are really impressive, but the level design is terrible. Platforms are haphazardly thrown into random places, and often two or three paths lead to the same place, usually with no change in difficulty. The worlds are way too open ended for no reason. I don't think there's one puzzle in this entire game. There's nothing clever about it, and quite frankly, boring. It's a game where you're supposed to go fast, and they let you do that with almost no challenges to overcome. So you just run right until you get to an exit or a boss, which are the most interesting aspects of the game unfortunately.

After getting really mad at this game, I switched over to Super Mario World. God drat that game still owns. They didn't get all flashy with the graphics, and it doesn't matter. The gameplay is the focus of the game, and it really shows over and over again. You can't just run right and expect to win. You need to go in all different directions, but sometimes you're squeezed into a small area with enemies that are actually challenging to get by or defeat. There's puzzle elements and lots of secrets too.

I'd also like to take this time to admit that I have been a victim of the "Genesis does" brainwashing. I told all my friends that Genesis was superior, and that it could do blast processing and SNES doesn't. I'm really ashamed by this, and I wish that I could go back in time to ask for a SuperNES instead of a Genesis and live my whole life again.

saying you just mindlessly hold right in the older sonic games is bullshit. maybe for the first 2 stages of each game. sonic is bad for entirely different reasons.

despite supposedly being about speed, they do their absolute damnedest to slow you down whenever possible with an insane amount of waiting around for platforms and poo poo. the exception is the designated speed sections that mostly take control away from you for a few seconds of dumb rollercoaster garbage. the camera is zoomed in to the point where you have zero chance of seeing obstacles or enemies coming, and the heavy momentum based movement is excruciatingly sluggish. playing super meat boy in particular makes it apparent how poo poo classic sonic is, since it nails that smooth and fast paced feeling by doing the complete opposite of what sonic does. rings are also the most retarded way of doing health in anything ever made, but the game needs it because its a patchwork fix to make up for the fact that you have no clue if you're about to run into something.

sonic was popular because it looked amazing, has fantastic music, and had great marketing. not because it played well.

The original games weren't amazing but pretty far from bad. Sonic 2 had lousy stuff in it, but it also had things like Casino Night Zone.

Sonic CD is probably the best game the franchise has to offer.

It's like the good parts of sonic 2d and the best parts of the 3d sonic games combined into one good game.

As you can imagine it's very short.

Yeah, you pretty much nailed it. I forget if it's the 2nd or 3rd stage in Sonic 1, but it has much more of a classic platformer design to it. Almost like a castle level of Super Mario World, except it's barely fun.

Another ridiculous thing is the time limit for each level is 10 minutes. They could have at least upped the challenge a bit by making it 3-5 minutes.

if you did not pick [snes|genesis] [mario|sonic] [sf2|mk] you really hosed up

enjoy your characters all having identical basic move sets and a projectile mk fans
that leaves what for variety -the 1 other special move and the preprogrammed combos
