The controls in GTAV are honest to God really good. I never felt like it was the game's fault when I made an absolutely idiotic mistake when driving or shooting. The auto-aim makes the game feel more welcoming to people that aren't hardcore for shooting too, so it's not a very difficult game to get into. As I said before, I only play online and could give less of a poo poo about the story because I just like playing with my friends online and messing with random pubbies or doing crazy poo poo like driving a piece of poo poo junker up the steep side of the mountain. It's also fun to get like eight different personal vehicles in your garage and customize them to look and drive however you want.

Xander77 posted:Serious question - is it actually good? Because I'm hearing people going "the developers learned all the wrong lessons from GTAIV and absolutely nothing from Saints Row", and I'm not sure how much of that is just popularity backlash. The problem with GTA games is that the MTV style 'edgy' tone works with comedy but doesn't work with drama, and they keep trying to do drama. IMO Saints Row is too over the top, the gold standard for these games is San Andreas. GTA 5 is better with it than 4 but it still tries for serious and it's terrible Like the funny parts of GTA are really funny, but when it tries to be serious it's as douchey as douchey gets. They should have more stuff like Big Smoke and CJ chasing a train full of Mexican cartel goons on a bicycle and less stuff like the torture scene in 5 or the philosophizing

So I decided to reinstall GTAIV and try to beat the game before GTAV is released, boy was that a waste of time. Games Live for Windows still manages to loving suck rear end. Since I haven't logged in forever, I got hit up with suspicious activity, and had to spend time getting that taken care of. Once I did, I started up GTAIV, remapped controls, and then START game. Now I'm getting hit up with a connection error, what the gently caress. Solution according to google is to reinstall GFWL, so that's what I did. Restarted the game, logged into GFWL through GTAIV and... I have to restart game so GFWL live can do an update, gently caress. Ok, one more time I started GTAIV and logged into GFWL, oh by the way, I use keypass and GTAIV doesn't allow copy/paste so I had to alt-tab out each time to key in 3 characters at a time of my password each time I logged into GFWL. Finally I get it going and get into Nico's cousin's car and... nothing. The keyboard keys I remapped didn't work, so I did everything again. Escaped out of settings and tried driving again, nothing... One last time I remapped keys, couldn't see any type of way to save my settings, but escaped back into the game and... nothing. gently caress this poo poo, makes me not want to play GTAV.

The best thing about GTA IV was that I could just "plug in" and zone out. I'd be crouch-walking around the park or between buildings or whatever--you know, doin what I do--and then a friend would call me up and ask to go bowling/drinking/darting/whatever. It's moments like those when you realize that you'd hurt a lot of people if you suddenly decided to kill yourself.

Only Sleeping Dogs and SR2 managed to have cars that were fun, but they're still not quite as good as the 3-era GTAs. GTA IV's "supercars drive like something out of the 1930s" car mechanics are awful, but there's still more fun there than the rest of the genre outside of those games. SolidSnakesBandana posted:There are people that legit believe that GTA4 is a bad game. Those people are loving insane. It's not a bad game, but it is a terrible GTA. It's a huge step backward from the games that preceded it in most major areas, and the niceties of the pedestrian physics and vehicle damage don't make up for the lovely... everything else. Rockstar is capable of so much better, but they keep wanting to be original when their strengths are all in being derivative.

GTAIV kept promising big American tittays and disappointed sorely. If they spent as much time on the tittays that they did on the city it would have justified all the GOTY awards.

I guess GTA4 is a love it or hate it thing. I fuckin loved it, thought it was a great AAA game. I actually liked the car physics a lot. I wasn't a big fan of the cell phone side missions but I still thought they were fun. It's really weird to me to see people talk about how it sucks. The engine is just really solid. You can fire it up and just start shooting a couple cops in the face and see if you can get away on foot. The missions weren't anything special but the DLC made up for that.

Played it a bunch on the 360, and after I got this computer put together and heard about a PC port I didn't re-up the Live service for that one game. I'm just about spot on for the recommended requirements, which I hope is a good experience at 1920x1080
