the OP has certainly oversimplified things, but as huge multinational breweries continue to buy out every other brewery we are starting to see varieties become more generic in flavour. They want every product to appeal to the largest possible market, so subtle differences get lost along the way. I'm not saying the OP isn't a colossal goon, but there is some truth to his statement. On the other end of the spectrum you've got the few remaining microbreweries competing in some kind of hoppiness dick waving contest, or whipping up combinations that are so repellent they have to be some kind of joke (see Beau's disgusting lavender flavoured"St. Luke's Verse"; it's like drinking stale pot pourri).
