Yeah, the forest was featured in a classic book in which two lovers kill themselves there and it took on this weird..."romanticized" quality where it became the choice place to kill yourself. There are even published guidebooks on how to kill yourself in that forest.

He wasn't exactly around when the surrender officially happened and was convinced when he later heard the news that it was lies and propaganda designed to flush him out. They ultimately had to pull a John Rambo, by tracking down his retired commanding officer to have him officially relieve him of his duty.

quote:

Onoda was thus properly relieved of duty, and he surrendered. He turned over his sword, his functioning Arisaka Type 99 rifle, 500 rounds of ammunition and several hand grenades, as well as the dagger his mother had given him in 1944 to kill himself with if he was captured.

i only really know about gaki no tsukai. it's a long running variety show with all kinds of stuff.

in terms of just gaki, there are batsu games and not batsu games. the batsu games are more popular. batsu means 'punishment' as in 'we make you put up with this awful thing as your punishment for losing a stupid game'. on the one level the batsu games are all about amusing slapstick punishment. there's this other deeply psychological thing though, as the main dudes are comedians who spend all day trying to make each other laugh for a living, and then they're placed in this surreal constant 24 hour theatrical production where they are not allowed to laugh but are being watched by the production crew who has endless time to set up props and scenarios targeted with a laser precision to make these dudes laugh. it's like some weird version of hell

i would say some of the older batsus like 24 hour tag, hot springs, matsumoto's pie hell, anything pre 2006 or so are better to start with. they were more focused and spontaneous. over time the annual batsu became A Thing that airs for like six+ hours on new years eve, so it became more formulaic but with a much bigger budget. this is from like no laughing newspaperman or no laughing hotelman up to the present. these later batsu games rely a little bit more on backstory and context which you'll pick up if you watch them in roughly chronological order.

as for non-batsu just normal segments the 'absolutely tasty' series is also good, they cook insane poo poo to see if it's nice to eat or not (usually not) like fried breath mints and squid ink dough balls

e: for example one of the worst things i ever saw in a batsu is they stage a mock trial for one of the main comedians, who has a reputation as a sex fiend. they read out all of his hilarious sexts that he sent to a honeypot in the past year, on national tv, as his ex-wife sits behind him and pleads in his defense that he's just a horny dumbass who can't control himself

I saw a bit of one of those, there was a bit where the one of the comedians found a DVD in a drawer, there was a DVD player and TV right there, so they put it in, and it's a video showing pictures of the comedian and his family, and the guy's 8 year old son reads this letter about his dad, about how he's so proud of what his dad does and even when other kids pick on him or make fun of his dad about all the silly stuff he does on TV, the kid always stands up to them because he knows what his dad does makes people happy, and he loves him. By the end everyone in the room is trying to not cry, and then the kid signs off by saying something like "I love you dad, you're about to get kicked in the rear end" and the guy just breaks down sobbing and a kickboxer runs into the room and kicks him in the rear end really hard.

quote:

Burakumin (部落民?, "hamlet people"/"village people") is an outcast group at the bottom of the Japanese social order that has historically been the victim of severe discrimination and ostracism. They were originally members of outcast communities in the Japanese feudal era, composed of those with occupations considered impure or tainted by death (such as executioners, undertakers, workers in slaughterhouses, butchers or tanners), which have severe social stigmas of kegare (穢れ or "defilement") attached to them. Traditionally, the Burakumin lived in their own hamlets or ghettos.
