I can't remember where, but I saw something (I think it was a movie) that mentioned this. Either you saw the same movie and just remember this part better than I do or there has been some more study regarding this. If it is the latter, I would like to read about it.

I haven't seen that movie.

A large part of the human brain is more or less an obsessive pattern matching machine. Aristotle said there is a pleasure in simply recognizing something. The instant when things come together is always a big occasion in some corner of your mind and unexpected alignments prompt a vast surge of brain activity when they occur. So a gambling win is tapping into evolutionary human essentials of rewarding the discover of new food sources, new tools, and sweet negs that let you bang chicks.

Certain people receive much more of a reward than others when these things happen. For some these rewards are so strong that they will chase them despite anything the rational brain can do, decisions that involve different parts of the brain in opposition to eachother sometimes seem to come from nothing more than which side shouts the loudest.

Certain medications can alter brain chemistry to the degree that gambling becomes irresistible.

Craps used to be my jam but every time I have played it in my past few trips it has seemed to totally blow donkey balls.

Now I just play roulette like some sort of sorority girl.

A lot of places have tanked their rules and/or introduced continuous shufflers. Phil Ivey and another guy also made the rounds a few years ago grinding all the angles and places are real hesitant to stray from these tanked rules even if you're bringing in big money. This happened mostly on baccarat but the chill washed over.
