Alesya talks it over with people some, before proposing her own dark and unholy agenda. OK, it's not dark and unholy.

What seems to be the key to all of this situation is wealth, in her judgment. Trade produces this wealth, albeit indirectly; it expands networks and draws people together. Raw military force is vital and present in abundance, but Kitezh Vyshka is uniquely equipped to be able to do, if not "without" it, certainly "able to think of other things to boot." Similarly, God is everywhere, if apparently of variable strength and intensity.

However, as she illustrates with a couple of walnuts and a chestnut, if two large things try to collide, a thing in between them can go flying - in a particular sort of direction.

The broad outline of what she would like to have happen is for Prokhor to discover impieties in the forces and/or lands of Iaroslav, which should, in her judgment, provoke P to battle I. This leaves Kostya in the middle, and with a little caution he could be provoked to turn to Alesya and her barony for shelter from the plausible storm. However, this is a mere proposed plan - the goal is to have P and I slam into each other, weakening them while moving K into her arms.

She is willing to back the tournament for the Spring, if the covenant is willing to help matters - that would seem to be an excellent time to either plant or reap tensions between the man of war and the man of God. And the man of learning? Well, Kitzeh Vyshka is renowned for its scholarliness, isn't it?

Erindis is way less conniving and is entirely for a tournament. She would like a magical section for it, and it is obvious she is going to invite a bunch of other Flambeau, unless stopped.

Owain, being the old-school kind of Knight (wannabe), is absolutely thrilled by the idea of a Spring tournament, and gets wholeheartedly caught up in describing all the wonderful things that are supposed to happen in a tournament to whoever will listen. He enthuses about signing up, and even adds that he'll probably write a poem for Brynhildr to commemorate the event. He is far too lost in this to offer commentary on the political situation, but he'll probably agree to anything that lets him dress up in his armor and ride a horse and fight.

Gerulf is almost the exact opposite. He has no interest whatsoever in the tournament, except as a means to make money. He broadly agrees with Alesya in regards to trade, wealth, and network expansion. It's quite a gambit she's playing, but it's a good one, and it might leave him room to expand into the gap should something happen to remove one of the major players from power. Gerulf is happy to back Alesya in this.

Theodora is against the tournament, arguing it's a frivolous expense. This causes some tension between her and her Varangian companion, enough that Theodora, sensing the tide of the council against her in any case, ultimately chooses to abstain on the issue rather than widen the gulf with a nay vote. She makes no new proposals herself this season.

In regards to Alesya's machinations, she finds a willing co-conspirator in Theodora. The noblewoman's plan is almost Imperial in its deviousness, and Theodora sees potential advantage for her and the covenant. Theodora points out that Prokhor has both zeal and might on his side. In a battle between him and Iaroslav, P might well triumph quickly enough to end in a stronger position.

However, I's temper could be advantageous. If I could be provoked sufficiently, he might well attack P out of hand and without warning, likely wounding or slaying P. In such a case, the subsequent confusion among P's vassals in the absence of their lord combined with their fury with I would be more likely to result in the desultory conflict desired. Ideally the provocation should be sufficiently grave that I's actions would not be viewed as wholly unacceptable, thus bringing down the ire of other lords.

In the resulting chaos, A could ally with K to act as mediator, strengthening her position and binding K closer to her.

As for her activities this season, Theodora takes up The Organized Mind, interested to see what paths her fellow magus has tread.

Would grabbing Vera's book impede our ability to copy it? Or can we do one a season so they can do her more recent work while Theodora is reading the first one?

Brynhildr is rather cross with Theodora's lack of support for her proposal, and quite pleased with Owain indicating he plans to write a poem for her. Whether this good will lasts once the poem is presented remains to be seen - Owain may have something quite different than a saga in mind. When it becomes clear that her tourney has a fair bit of support, she rubs it in with Theodora a bit. She suggests late spring for when to hold it.

Whatever gap the disagreement over the tourney opened up between Brynhildr and Theodora, it wasn't enough to prevent her becoming involved peripherally in Alesya's scheming. The warrior woman, at the Byzantine's prompting, indicates she'll help out, should someone need to be taught a bloody lesson.

With the cold closing in, the shieldmaiden focuses on her forces and training for the season, lest they grow soft sitting by the fires and drinking all winter. Besides, she still needs more practice with the axe, which she keeps to almost religiously. She can resume her quest once the snows melt and the tourney is done.

Brynhildr spends the season on lifestyle maintenance.

Alesya goes through some wine while scheming over this with Theodora. Getting I to hit P does seem like it'd have a better result - if P just smacks I into a meaty gelatin then they're worse off. If she has to choose, she opines, she'd rather keep I than P - but she says that only in confidence, and after quite a fair bit of wine.

Ivan is positively giddy at the idea of a tournament. By 'giddy', mostly it's laughing loudly and reveling in the potential glorious jousts that may happen in it. Not once does it come to his mind that it may be costy. Altought the question do come, if they host such a tournament, what would be the rewards for it?

Kazimir has little thoughts about the tournament, but if there is to be one, they'll have to figure a way to not make it too costy for them. The Covenant's finances aren't that impressive at the moment. He wouldn't mind a bit of a Certamen tournament or some magical events, as well. Says the Tremere.

As for the problem of the local nobles, Kazimir will at first seems completely uninterrested, and overnight will be asking some information on the matter. He does not directly ask to be part of the ploy, but he shows interests -- and if there is a way he can help somehow, he will help.

Also, yeah, we can't copy the book if someone's reading it I think.

Gennady looks up from his experiments long enough to hear about a tournament. He immediately and vociferously supports this idea. A tournament will allow for a true test of wills and skills! He's all for it, especially the magic portion. He clearly intends to compete! As for the rest of the season, he'll keep cracking on his experiment, donning only the bare minimum of protective gear against the growing cold. The winter means lots of cloud cover - though little lightning - but what the hell, why not. It's an experiment, after all.

Brother Luke labors on ignorant of the machinations of nobility, which is exactly how he likes it. He takes part in the church's preparations for the winter, trying to shore up stock of the things they will not have opportunity to acquire later in the season, using the little resources they have, as well as attempting to mentally catalogue the Kitezh's poor who may need extra assistance in the winter. This kind of quotidian task is hardly a stretch of his imagination, but he rests easier once the work is done.

In other words, Luke maintains his lifestyle.

Vera abstains from voting, burying herself in her research fully instead of things such as intrigue or games. Alternating writing with reading, she next takes up Auras: An Exploration of Theory, brushing up on her magic theory.

Valentin votes yes on having the tournament... and then spends most of the winter making good use of his intrigue skills to gather some info. He approves of Alesya's plan, and spends his free time this winter doing recon in support of it.

Allrighty then!

After a time, the council decides on Alesya's request. Her funding for the Spring tournament will be invaluable, and they are interested enough in that to agree to breaking the Code of Hermes by pledging their assistance to her political games. Should it kept subtle and secret, there should be no trouble. If the Quaesitores discover it, however, there will be some explaining required. Best to be subtle. The tournament preparations begin for the Spring, and invitations are prepared for the other covenants of Novgorod, that they might send their best for competition.

Alesya and Theodora begin their more in-depth planning, and Theodora takes up The Organized Mind while the scribes get to work copying Vera's more recent text.

Theodora gets 14 Intellego XP.

Brynhildr sets her time to practicing with her men, readying herself for the coming tourney.

2 XP in any weapon skill or Leadership.

Gennady finishes his experiment without further incident. The weather draws darker, but he has little lightning to work with. In the end, that turns out to be a boon - his spell has little to do with lightning. calling down a powerful whirlwind. It isn't going to hurt people as much as lightning would unless it throws them into something sharp, but it's more than capable of hurling someone around easily. It also has the benefit of working anywhere, so long as he's outdoors - no storm clouds needed. Of course, it lasts only a moment...but that's really all that's needed.

Gennady gets 2 XP in Creo, Auram or Magic Theory, plus his new spell, which needs a name.

Brother Luke helps with the preparations for winter and takes care of minor maladies that come with the heavy snows. The church is ready and, thanks to his work, the congregation even keeps the snowfall from collapsing some of the roofing. It's a pleasant feeling.

2 XP in Area Lore: Kitezh Vyshka, or Organization Lore: The Church.

Everyone else, I still need your winter actions! Once you get them planned, Spring will feature the tournament and some politics that come with it. I will get descriptions of the other covenants of the area up before Spring starts.

Three Lakes Covenant

Three Lakes is one of the founding covenants of the Tribunal and your only political equals. They house the resident quaesitores, who work constantly to push back against the Rhine and Transylvanian Tribunals' territorial claims. They run the local Redcap network and are pushing to shore up the Polish covenant of Leczyca to gain more control over the Polish territories. They are based out of a woodland vlaley in the north, running their own large stockade. They control many large flocks and fishing, as well as shipping in food from Novgorod, but outside of bulk food shipments they're practically self-sufficient. They control the Beslavichi trade family, who are actually magi. Three Lakes is very strictly hierarchical, unlike you, but they have bcome quite worried recently about new blood, and they've recently taken in four apprentices.

Magi:
Andrei Soitkchin - House Guernicus, senior quaesitor of Novgorod and chairman of the Three Lakes council. Ensures that people are obeying the Three Lakes Charter and the Code
Pavel Chedyav - House Guernicus, junior quaesitor. Andrei's obvious successor and proud of it. Lab worker by calling, less interested in legal philosophy. Originally Polish, appears to resent Tribunal rulings on non-interaction with Polish and Russian royals but obeys.
Yury Beslav - House Jerbiton, public head of the Beslavichi. Dabbles in patronage of artistry and merchants, very social.
Georgi Yurivich - House Jerbiton, Yury's son and filius. Manages Beslavichi trade abroad, friend to Malincka Capcek of the Thousand Caves.
Batiba an Khatiba - House Ex Miscellanea, a local pagan shaman.
Zashya Miyovna - House Bjornaer, senior Bjornaer of the Tribunal. Diplomatic and graceful, renowned for her beauty in her youth. Daughter of Miya Cossuri of Pripet Maior.
Susan of Wicklow - House Mercere, but Gifted. Traveler and explorer, supporter of Redcaps. Apolitical.
Olga Daisalvl - House Merinita, secretive. Excellent but not prolific writer, famously good at teaching, but doesn't enjoy doing it.
Nicollo Parelli - House Verditius, fat and hedonistic. He avoids politics and violence, but enjoys studying non-Hermetic magic. Surprisingly socially adept.
Boris Davidovich - House Bjornaer, the youngest full magus of Three Lakes. He is fascinated by animals and the beast lords of faerie. Widley documents his work and is happy to teach his knowledge to anyone who asks. Covered head to toe by brown hair due to a Twilight experience.
Ilya the Scarred - House Tytalus, parens to Marina and Gennady. Seems to encourage a rivalry between the two, prone to causing arguments for his own amusement.

Thousand Caves Covenant

Thousand Caves is based out of the Valley of a Thousand Caves in the Urals, under the massif known as the Earth Crown. It is inside a giant cavern, hard to access by outsiders, especially those that can't fly. Home to an extremely potent faerie aura and heavily reliant on pagan Slavs to support them. Very interested in studying non-Hermetic magic and the power of pagan gods and faeries. Trying to develop a useful pagan religion to manipulate the local people, which is politically volatile, to say the least. They've been trying to convince everyone to help them for about ten years now. They really do not like Pripet Maior, due to a spate of attacks and arguments over their project.

Magi:
Malincka Capcek - House Bonisagus, leader of the covenant. Head of the Thousand Caves religious project, and a huge political firebrand in the Tribunal.
Nastassia Baramov the Firebird - House Bjornaer, second in command of the covenant. The more charismatic of the two leaders. Obsessed with fire and the firebird legends. A devoted pagan worshipper of Hermes and Khors.
Rehamchi Danichev - House Ex Miscellanea, senior among the Volkhvy shamans of Thousand Caves. Sees himself as the leader of the community and is teaching the others about pagan rituals and worship. Thinks the entire pagan religion project is foolish but amusing.
Lelya Danichev - House Ex Miscellanea, Rehamchi's daughter. Much more Hermetic than he is, actually beleives in the project. Impatient with normal Hermetic attitudes towards hedge wizards, very angry at Pripet Maior.
Yakim ibn Rassur - House Flambeau, Bulgarian Muslim. Enthusiastic and cheerful, but hates Greeks in general. Finds the theorizing of the project fascinating.
Basyl Karrimichi - House Merinita, prankster. Entirely unserious and refuses to get involved in focused study. Very friendly, and prone to prophetic visions, which is why everyone else keeps him around.
Otto Rattstein - House Bjornaer, once highly ranked in the House. Mysterious and obscure. Has defended the project, but refused to get involved in the Pripet Maior disputes.
Narina Cheminov - House Bjornaer, has lived most of her life among magi. Eccentric magic, with a poor grasp of basic Hermetic power but extremely good at healing, animal magic and wilderness survival. Hates Pripet Maior viciously.

Pripet Maior Covenant

Pripet Maior is based on an island in the Great Pripet Marsh, accessible via a narrow path that is well defended. It was one of the founding covenants of the Tribunal. Once, it was full of magically enchanted trees and so on, but they have gone to seed somewhat. Goods and materials are stolen from normal society or taken from the marshes. Local faeries and animals avoid them, and the peasants on the swamp hate and fear them. The magi are old and increasingly growing less rational. There has not been a new member or apprentice in over 70 years. They have a lot of lore but are obsessively using it to defend themselves, with their only major action recently being raids and arguments with Thousand Caves. Once, they were the site of Tribunal meetings, but ceded that right to Three Lakes 40 years ago. They find the Thousand Caves to be uppity and dangerous and think the entire project should be stopped by any means necessary.

Magi:
Yellina Ozwry - House Bjornaer, leader of Pripet Maior. The most sane and rational member. Deaf, but still able to communicate via her magic. Sees nothing wrong with hurting mundanes, but is quite friendly with magi.
Vlachs von Hasstein - House Bjornaer, Bavarian. Poor short-term memory. Highly aggressive towards outsiders and tends to be the guy who steals things the covenant needs. Loves animals.
Casimi Ljech - House Bjornaer, a huge angry Pole. Suffers from memory loss and dementia, and will likely die in a few years. Extremely aggressive towards Thousand Caves.
Miya Cossuri - House Bjornaer, the eldest magus in Novgorod (at age 153). Relatively sane, but dying. Is always attended by animals, who will defend her to the death.
Lev Deniki - House Bjornaer, seems rational and friendly in conversation. However, somewhat paranoid about dangers.
Stolitzya the Swimmer - House Bjornaer, went into Final Twilight 40 years ago and is permanently in the form of an immense magical turtle. Last seen 15 years ago, believed by Pripet Maior to rule the swamp as a giant turtle the size of several buildings.

Leczyca Covenant

Basded out of Poland, and prone to antagonizing Rhine magi. Exceptionally Polish and distrustful of Germans. Based out of an impressive castle north of the town Leczyca. The cause of many tensions with the Rhine Tribunal over the creation of Novgorod Tribunal and the loss of Grand Silesia to Novgorod. Allied with Three Lakes. They do not give much of a poo poo about the Thousand Caves project and are rather upset that they've been forbidden to consort with Polish nobles and royalty. 30 years ago, they were convicted of violating that proscription and heavily fined for helping Silesian nobles against Germans.

Magi:
Stanis Chechanko - House Jerbiton, public face of Leczyca, but not often backed by his fellow magi, particularl the Tremeres. Focused on keeping Lecyca's influence strong among the locals and guiding the merchants. Wants to be a major political player in the Order.
Kasina Popovich - House Merinita, one of two twins. A wild and unorthodox magus, at her strongest when close to her sister and weakest when far from her. Flamboyant practical jokester, likes the Thousand Streams project. Obsessed with strange lore.
Frania Popovich - House Tremere, the other twin. Extremely conservative and incapable of spontaneous magic. At her strongest when close to her sister and weakest far from her. Reserved, dignified and respectful of hierarchy and planning. Committed to Leczyca politics and supporting Stanis most of the time as well as bringing order to the covenant. Studies human law.
Tomaszi Klimowcz - House Verditius, eldest magus of Leczyca. Focused on craftwork and artisanal magic. Irritable in his old age, extremely proud of his artistry.
Ruprecht de Solange - House Tremere, French. Sees himself as a warrior-knight and leads the turb in battle. Rival of Frania.
Sanya Tianowicz - House Bjornaer, loyal and steadfast. Obsessively defensive of her home but otherwise apolitical.
Barchek Ocowski - House Mercere, Redcap. Travels the Tribunal and into the Rhine and Transylvania, plus yearly trips to Rome. Friendly, engaging and good at blendign with normal people.
Yannes Kolski - House Criamon, known as the Mad Magus of the East. Prone to prophetic visions, often apocalyptic. Does not use magic often, and some believe he is barely alive. Last seen wandering the wilderness near Vladimir-in-Suzdalia.
Marina the Sunchaser - House Tytalus, beloved rival of Gennady. She is exceptionally proud and wants to beat him at just about everything.

Seven Sisters Chapter House

Seven Sisters is the chapterhouse of Kitezh Vyshka, based out of a valley between the seven mountains from which it takes its name. They are ambitious and while in theory subordinate to you, they have recently been pushing for their own independence. They are small, but all of them are senior to most of you. In theory, allies, but definitely need to be watched. They grow most of their own resources or borrow them from you.

Magi:
Scipio Romanus - House Guernicus, the third and final Quaesitor of the Tribunal. Strict and stern, but not especially ambitious.
Vasilisa Krupin - House Jerbiton, interested in art using nature as her medium. Often pisses off the Bjornaer, fascinated by the Thousand Caves project.
Karolinus of Spain - House Flambeau, politically ambitious. The one that most wants independence. An excellent combatant.
Ivan Tyrvallen - House Bjornaer, also wants independence. Disapproves of the Thousand Caves, devout Christian.

Far Shores Covenant

In theory, a member of the Tribunal. In practice, based out of Iceland. No one has seen them in over a century.

Owain spends a great deal of time practicing for the tournament. The young Knight spends most of his winter practicing, steeling himself for the event. He focuses on what he feels are his weaknesses, which definitely is horse riding; he's not a great rider, but he's going to try to be better by the time the Spring comes around. He spends as much time as he possibly can riding in his full armor, with various bizarre contraptions to give himself trouble staying on. At one point, he even straps sandbags onto his arms!

Gerulf , meanwhile, intends to take advantage of those paths through the mountains he discovered last month. He's going to embark on another trade expedition, a bit riskier, in order to make clear his ability and mark himself as a stand-out merchant worth watching...and worth fearing. He loads up on furs and useful winter provisions, then heads off across the mountains with a few grogs. He need not fear wolves, but bandits and bears are another matter altogether.

Kazimir decides, upon hearing that the tournament will happen, to offer a way to create some lodgings for the participants. They wont be the grandest that they might be able to do, but it'll beat crappy tents. He hides himself in his laboratory, working on a spell to manipulate soft earths to create walls and structure -- and get a little heated on the matter, experimenting with a few little concepts like 'mixing earths' and 'how the hell do I make a clay cabin'. He often send out grogs to gather for him all sort of samples of soil, sometimes with small description such as 'this but thicker!'. Perhaps to the covenfolk's relief, he acts more like a mage ought to in this season, displaying not much patience as his mind is occupied at his arcane puzzle.

Ivan will have the second best time of his life before a tournament, and get the grogs together as well as the other instructors to get a good ol' rousing group training for everyone. They're hosting this tournament, they have to make a good showing! He'll practice gladly with Owain on horse riding. Not that he feels it's a weakness, but more that it's a nice change of pace.

Vera secludes herself with Auras, poring over the text as the cold draws in. The work is fascinating, going into the history of the study of magical auras as well as some theories about them. There is a digression into the history of the woman who discovered how to manipulate auras and divided them into the four realms, which is really quite fascinating in its way. It appears she vanished shortly before she was going to publish some more of her groundbreaking research. A pity, that.

Vera gets 14 Magic Theory XP after Book Learner, existing the tractatus.

Valentin heads out to explore over the winter, learning much of the local terrain. It is an educational experience, and he finds some very nice places to hide if he ever needs to.

7 Area Lore: Kitezh Vyshka XP!

Erindis sends off the letters to her fellow Flambeau, inviting them specifically to the tournament, and then begins to study The Power Of Power. It explores the uses of Vim in detail, especially as applied to metamagic and support of other spells, but not ignoring the possibility to just throw raw magic at things to taint them. It is an exceptionally dense text, full of metaphor, and by the end of winter, she has puzzled out the meaning of only a few chapters in the first volume.

10 Vim XP!

Alesya prepares for the coming tournament and her intrigues.

2 Intrigue XP!

Owain devotes himself to training, riding about in full armor as much as he can. In the cold and snowy weather, it is not pleasant, but he does it anyway, in between poetry.

4 Ride XP.

Gerulf, for his part, sets off to make some money. While he need not fear wolves, crossing the mountains in winter is more than enough of a challenge. The bears may be sleepy and the bandits snowed in, but the snow itself is a terrible danger. He is lucky to make it home with all of his escort alive, though he makes some profit for his endeavors, selling furs and stocking up on seeds, which will become quite valuable in springtime.

2 XP in either Survival or Bargain.

Kazimir sets about working on a new spell. His experiments with the soil prove particularly fruitful, and by the dawning of the new year, he has achieved even more than he thought he would. The spell he creates proves not only well able to control up to a thousand cubic paces of earth and clay, but it fertilizes the materials it moves and clears them of grass and weeds, rendering them particularly fertile. This should prove quite handy, though the spell itself will require great finesse and skill to produce anything that looks impressive.

Kazimir gets lucky on his experiment rolls - he gets enough to finish in one season, plus he gets a major beneficial side effect from the experimentation table!

Ivan works with Owain, practicing riding - a vital skill for upcoming jousts.

4 XP in Ride!

With the end of the season, everyone ages one year. Owain and Alesya show no physical signs of aging whatsoever, though. (Everyone else looks one year older.)

Spring, 1222

As the new year dawns, the Aegis is reapplied. Spring comes, and with it, the arrival of guests, as the announced tournament nears its beginning. Kazimir prepares packed earth housing for the arriving guests, and it looks very nice - not as finishes, perhaps, as stone, but he includes detailing and patterns in the earth to make it look impressive.

I abstracted this to a single Finesse roll, which ended up with a [b]21]/b]. Very nice. Now name the spell.

And what are your plans?

WampaPartyEX
Jan 13, 2012
Owain is excited to enter the tournament. Brimming with energy, he goes about watching Kazimir put together the lodgings, shines his armor, sharpens his blade, and readies himself for an excellent and memorable chance to capture glory. He prepares himself with zeal, conversing with *anyone* who will listen and brimming with excitement. As soon as he gets a chance to sign up, he does so.

Gerulf is much less enthusiastic about the tournament, but is fascinated by Kazimir's new spell. He immediately started wondering if that could be used with the seeds he purchased, and approaches Kazimir about a money-making plan. He intends to use the spell to improve the soil in some of the less-arable areas of the steppe, then plant seeds and either sell the excess foodstuff to market, or perhaps sell some of the extra land nobody's using. He's uncertain if the spell would make it possible, but he's going to go looking for some areas this spring that might be viable for either plan regardless. Alternatively, they could buy up useless land from surrounding nobles for a fair price (especially if Gerulf has some money available), and then turn it fertile and turn a major profit.

The first day of the tournament goes mostly well. Brynhildr and Ivan win their jousts, though Owain loses and, in a fit of terrible luck, also kills his horse as he falls. A certamen duel between Erindis and Karolinus is arranged, with the stakes being a book if Karolinus loses and, if he wins, a chance to persent his case for independence to the covenant council. Gennady, meanwhile, challenges Marina to a three-part match: fistfighting, magical dueling and hunting. He barely loses the first, only to discover that his parens will be arriving the next day to watch the rest. Prokhor, it seems, is planning to gather land to give to the Teutonic Knights so that their crusade can come to Kiev. Iaroslav seems to dislike this plan, and the two are already annoyed at each other.

The next part of the event will be on next Friday, September 4.

Crap, let this slip by. I've got the 13th, 20th, 23rd, and 27th guaranteed free. Otherwise, any day except mondays and tuesdays I'm probably free but can't guarantee it, especially since I've got out of state friends coming down next week.

My paper soldiers form a wall, five paces thick and twice as tall.
Probably any evening next week after 5pm Eastern would be okay. I'm back in classes though so going past 11pm Eastern is a bit tough.

After a Speaker vote, you may be entitled to a valuable coupon or voucher!

I would prefer not to do Friday or Saturday but am otherwise free. (I COULD do Saturday if needed; I DEFINITELY CAN'T do Friday.)

Strike that, reverse it: Friday is doable. Saturday is marginally more so too!

Generally unavailable on Tuesdays and Thursdays, available any other day. I'm out the 15 & 16, otherwise weekends are good for me. I'm on Pacific time so I can't do any earlier than 8 EST on weekdays.
