Open world games are tedious. You have to walk around. Someone who is short on time can't fully enjoy one of those games. 30 minutes to get to an inn to heal after one battle. Not my cup of tea.

for me, hope for video games died with me3. when a nerdy, niche series exploded into the mainstream bioware(ea) decided rather than create a precedent for series' with integrity that will stick through to the end they rolled out me3 with the explicit intention of having anyone be able to pick up the third game in a trilogy that was supposed to be driven by character action/decision and have it be a "complete experience." it makes me sad me2 was so successful.

me3 didn't even feel like that. it just felt lazy and stupid, like a fanfiction version of mass effect.

the shittiest thing about it was how the ending was so atrocious that it took focus away from the fact that the game was poo poo in most other respects as well. SPACE NINJA, never forget

gta 4 sucked poo poo because they made the driving not fun in a driving game i played it for like 2 hours to give a it a real chance and gently caress it

gta 5 had fun driving
but hosed up the wanted system so its no longer fun getting 4 stars and trying to survive because theyll just keep spawning right loving next to you

and where are my vigilante and fireman and ambulance missions
the best thing to do in a fresh save of vice city was go to the rampage with the molotov so you can get a firetruck and get a few million dollars doing those missions because you dont suck at video games
and the best thing in any gta was doing vigilante missions in sa with an mp5 on a police bike
and they took it out because whoever is designing these games cant play video games

Yep, this is me and why I don't really play games any more. Obviously not having the same free time from when you were a kid contributes a lot, but I only like Zelda games like the SNES one where you can only go in like 4 different directions.

I never even liked Toshinden back in the day because I liked fighting games on a 2d plane. Now I gotta learn all this other poo poo on top of moving around in 3d.

I really liked Max Payne but I tried to get into part 3 but holy poo poo I cannot learn the controls. How am I supposed to remember to hold LT while pushing in the 3d pad and pressing RF to shoot my gun while ducking? I still get hosed up with where the buttons are on the controller because I'm so used to the left button being cancel and the right button being "confirm" from the SNES days. Supposedly in Japan it is still that way and their PlayStation controller buttons are even physically swapped.

To be honest though, no longer enjoying video games is a positive thing so I don't fight it too much. The only thing I play these days is Smash Bros WiiU but even then I'm still using a controller from 2001 to play it and I only play with friends over because I never understood the appeal of playing games online. :corsair:

Hey OP play Nintendo games. Among the big publishers, they rehash less, output higher quality, release complete games, and make the most substantial and cheap DLC. More than that though, they never forgot what a game is supposed to be.

the thing is, games within those franchises are actually really goddamn different from one another when compared with other series', and they also don't come out as often. poo poo there are more call of duty games than there are main-series mario titles yet mario is nearly 20 years older than cod.

Yeah it's weird that they kinna died with Quake 3 so long ago.

I guess most players these days enjoy being able to rack up kills on anyone without having to have much skill or practice in modern shooters. Back in the deathmatch days, if you were a newbie, it DID suck rear end to log in to a server and get completely owned non stop for hours while trying to learn the game. You could easily be playing for several hours without a single kill if you joined the wrong server vs regulars who knew the maps, armor/health locations, re-spawn timers and were skilled with all the weapons.

My first real online gaming experience in Quake 2 went something like this when I finally joined and loaded the server map:

Spawn to see a guy with the human male model somehow blended with the strogg infantry skin jumping towards me with a rocket launcher, then freezing in mid air. The ominous brown "unplugged" connection problem symbol taking up the top corner of my screen. I sit there staring at it for like 5 minutes waiting for it to get going while Cow & Chicken is playing on the living room TV behind me. Every minute or so the game twitches with a quip blip of noise then freezes again.

Ahhh, dial up with AOL on Mplayer and Heat.net :allears:
