No game series really need to go beyond IV because at that point you are regressing feature and gameplay wise.

Don't forget Tropico 4 (5 sucked)

Maybe it's only true for city building games. Fyi these are still a good genre and it's where I've wound up after experiencing this same disillusionment with mainstream fps games and etc.
