This month's theme is expression! Expression is more than the look on someone's face, body language, your palette, composition and mood of your piece all work together to create expression within the work (and hopefully within the viewer). Anyway, facial expressions are actually kind of a pain in the butt, so I really recommend The Artist's Complete Guide to Facial Expression which goes over everything you need to know in exhausting, excruciatingly boring detail. Here's some examples! Picasso Courbet and Sophie Taeuber-Arp Hans Richter and Judy Chicago Fernando Botero and D. Jeffrey Mims Yue Minjin Here's 50 1-2 min. expression studies. Proportions are all over the place (especially on that last one) because i wasn't really focusing on that, just the expressions themselves

Hey I finally have a thing that matches the theme! Yay. Drew a quick piece for a thing I'm writing, my main protagonist. I was originally going to draw her screaming, didn't have the patience, and so I guess that's the next project.

Your work often looks like it is made from manipulated photos, not hand-drawing. If you traced or did filters on a photo and added some details, it seems kind of deceiving to call it "drawing".

They're drawings, not manipulations or traces. I draw them in little bits color by color-- I can post a progression on the next one I do if you want. The bigger ones take me about eight hours, this one took me four or five.

I think I understand the distinction you're making, so please take the following just as a critique. When you work very carefully from photos--so carefully that the "photographic" aesthetic aspects of the original are carried over into the final piece, I think it undermines the organic elements that make artwork look like a human product. When traditional artists work from photos, they typically reinterpret the underlying structure and form of the subject, rather than the individual patches of color that comprise the surface. For example, Norman Rockwell worked extensively from photos and even traced onto his canvasses using a projector. However, he enlivened the source material through caricature and artistic reinterpretation, rather than exact copying. There is a reason for that. Artists who draw/paint from life create finished works that do not look like photos, even if their technique and style are "realistic" and intensely refined. The way human eyes see form and color is different from the way cameras do, and things are lost in translation. I respect the amount of careful work you obviously put into the process of doing these pieces but I don't think the finished work is served well by your approach.

Tried my hand at some expressions. For others interested in the subject, I suggest you focus on the six core emotions: happiness, sadness, love, anger, fear and duckface.

Another book I found on expressions that was kind of useful was Making Faces: Drawing Expressions for Comics and Cartoons. If you like case study type art-books, well, I find cartoon expressions a good place to start. Also, god-drat, that duckface is so perfect. Bad selfies for life!

(no points for guessing what i've been playing this week) Today marks the one-month mark of me actually drawing daily. I don't always draw stuff that's challenging, or cool, or showable to anyone but myself, but I'm feeling pretty good at making myself actually draw something every day, even if it's just some goofy five minute sketch. Baby steps, right?

Coincidentally, I just decided to stop drawing faces. I feel like I've spent the better part of my drawing life trying to draw faces and they still look like poo poo. Maybe the secret lies in never drawing another face again

A couple of figure drawings. First one is a character sketch for a role-playing campaign set in the 1920's. The character is an ex-prizefighter so I wanted the portrait to look like the kind of picture they might give out to fans for signing and I wanted him to look proud. The second picture was drawn while listening to an EDM playlist. I wanted to go for something dynamic with more movement, and I'd like to play around with bright colours, when I start painting it I'd like to use a lot of neon against deep shadows.

Neat! I thought you'd lay down big areas first, then go for the detail. It's cool to see how you just pop every area down as it's gonna be. This has a very "trainspotting" vibe to it. Phylodox posted:Continuing my World of Warcraft series. Dwarves dwarves dwarves I vote for dwarves do it do it.

It has to be Wacom compatible, apparently Toshiba laptops went through a "wacom touch screen" phase at one point so I got lucky. There are also pen-sized ones for the Note phones, which are really nice if you don't like the tiny stylus the tablet comes with. Wacom made a $40 Bamboo stylus just for the note, which looks awesome but I haven't tried it yet. Sharpest Crayon posted:Neat! I thought you'd lay down big areas first, then go for the detail. Aye, probably because they made the digitizer in the Samsung and the Toshiba - standard graphire stylus doesn't work, for what it's worth. Now I want one of those laptops... Probably still be more powerful than my current frankendesktop... The newer toshiba version, the Satellite, isn't too pricey, but still way outta my price range (which is about 0 to 'found it outside someone's house').

I'm yet to see a stylus that doesn't look goofy as hell. The Galaxy default one avoids looking actively stupid by being too small to see, but otherwise you're stuck with Babby's First Pen.

Spent the evening working on a belated birthday gift for a friend. I think I'm getting the hang of this digital drawing stuff! Used a lot of soft, airbrushy strokes to build up shadows and then used some basic hard-edge brush marks to add highlights and then went back in with a soft eraser to pull it back a bit.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying this isn't great but dayumn dude your linework on the dorf sketch is loving beautiful, why you gotta be all covering it up? I mean, I get wanting to go for realistic, but considering the warcraft designs are cartoony to begin with, it's a shame not to flaunt those lines. (I may be a bit biased towards linework since I never did realism well)

Well, the whole point of the exercise was for me to stop using lines and describe forms using nothing but light and colour. But just so no one goes home unhappy, here's a couple of commissions I did recently: There seems to be a surprisingly good amount of money in drawing World of Warcraft fanart for people.
