i was a big fan of this movie as a kid, my dad used to make us do our own lil groundhog day tradition where we'd watch the movie then we'd wake up my dog and if he had to go out and pee it meant six more weeks of me only getting ketchup packets and the cheese from old timey mouse traps for dinner.

Phil treated everyone around him like poo poo because he felt like poo poo, and when he was cut off from any meaningful outside contact, that self-hatred began to manifest, starting with binge eating and culminating in suicide. The lesson Phil needed to learn wasn't to respect others, but to grow as a person so he could finally respect himself.
