Those things freak me out, but they seem pretty drat cool. When you say odd ergonomically do you mean it just isn't comfortable, or just weird? I'm probably gonna pick one up when I get paid tomorrow; my old Logitech mouse is still working well, but less and less devices I am buying have a dedicated USB slot, and it's old as hell anyway.

I wound up buying the TW802 myself. For an additional 40 dollars, the difference in specs is dramatic - enough that I also spent $150 on a monitor, keyboard, mouse, and usb hub to turn it into a desktop machine. It works great.

I looked into that one too but decided I wanted one that was slightly smaller since I didn't intend on doing any Real Computer Work on it. Either way, it's impressive how good they are for the price. Makes me optimistic about the future for Windows tablets.

Probably referring to the fact that if you happen to like to grip your mouse by the sides : too bad. There's nothing there. It takes a little getting used to.

That said, I love my Arc Mouse Surface edition.

Claw grip still works, you just have to grip it closer to the 'head' where the buttons are. That's how I normally use it, anyways.

The problems I found with it are that it's not very precise for tiny adjustments, and that the 'scroll wheel' seems to lose its inertia characteristic after a while (leaving it on your desk overnight for example). I think the former is an unfortunate consequence of using Bluetooth and energy saving measures, while the latter seems to be a genuine bug that other people have also reported. Power-cycling the mouse (i.e. flattening and unflattening) seems to fix the scrolling problem, but there doesn't seem to be a proper fix available.

I've found my Toshiba Encore 2 Write to be good for sketching. I'm not a good artist, or sophisticated when it comes to the software used by digital artists, but from an amateur's perspective the Wacom pen feels great, is responsive, and is precise.

This is probably a bit tangential to the aims of this thread but does anyone make something like the TW801 (or any of the tablets, really) with more ports but no screen? Just having a nice little microscopic desktop replacement that can run a browser and Office sounds like a killer in a small office setting.

Best one I heard of is the Ainol Mini PC

quote:

The Ainol Mini PC is a tiny desktop computer with an Intel Atom Z3735D Bay Trail processor, 2GB of RAM, 32GB of storage, and Windows 8.1 with Bing software. It also has a built-in battery.

It went on sale in China earlier this month, and now Geekbuying is taking pre-orders for international customers. Itfs selling for about $128, and the Ainol Mini PC should ship in mid-March.

The little computer has an aluminum case and measures 5.7 x 4.5 x 0.6 and weighs about 12 ounces. It features 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0, and has a microSD card slot, mini HDMI port, two USB 2.0 ports, a USB 3.0 port, and a headphone jack. It uses passive cooling, which means there are no fans inside the case.

Like a number of other small, low-cost Windows desktops wefve seen in the past few months, the Ainol Mini PC basically has the guts of a cheap Windows tablet minus the screen and plus a few ports. But this is one of a relatively small number of models I've seen that has a battery. Not only can the battery keep the PC running though, you can also connect your phone or other gadgets to one of the USB ports and use the Ainol Mini PC like a portable battery pack to recharge your other mobile devices.

According to the spec sheet, that 7,000mAh battery is good for up to 10 hours of run time or 40 hours of standby time. I suspect the battery will run down more quickly if you plugin a bunch of peripherals and try to run some CPU-intensive tasks. But the standby time is interesting, because it opens the possibility of treating this desktop sort of like a notebook: You can hook it up to a keyboard, mouse, and display and use it as your home computer and then put it into sleep mode, take it to the office and use it as your work PC without even rebooting.

Also : the other thing is that we've always had the optical sensor in the center of the mouse's mass. It's in the front on the Arc for obvious reasons, and that can also make it feel just kind of weird. I got used to it, but that was another little issue.

Seems spec-for-spec identical to the TW801, but with a couple more USB ports, and maybe more battery life (probably only because there's no screen to power). Maybe Win10 will push something forward in that market.

Just noticed that the HP Stream 8 w/T-Mobile dropped to $149 on the Microsoft Store.

A silly question: since the Streams run full Windows 8.1, do they have proper multitasking (say, an irc app and a browser visible simultaneously) and, if so, will they choke and die trying to do that with 1GB RAM?

They have the same multitasking of Windows 8.1 in general, including multiple concurrent desktop apps. Whether or not they choke is dependent on the software you're running, but with IE and a few other things in the background my Stream 7 only hiccups seldomly.

Yes, it is full windows running on an x86 PC, multitasking and all. I haven't used a tablet with 1GB RAM, but most of the people in the thread who have one have been pretty positive about the performance. Metro IE (which is the browser you'll probably end up using) is super aggressive about unloading memory.

After booting my Winbook for the first time, opening Modern IE, and maybe the store, I went to the desktop to see how tiny everything would look and there was a message window alerting me that I was running out of memory and I should close programs or my computer would slow down. Since I wasn't doing anything I just closed the window and it has never come back up. I'm assuming there was some first-time-running stuff going on in the background that ate all the RAM.

Just checked in task manager right now, with Modern IE, Kindle App, and Photos running, I'm at 73% memory usage. However, the lion's share of the memory usage is from Windows itself. Since I can plug in a keyboard and mouse, maybe later I'll use it for some desktop web browsing (with a youtube video running maybe) and see what that consumes. Any suggestions on what else to run at the same time to see where it chokes would be welcome!

The only advice I can offer is that Computers have been better at managing memory for quite a while now. Memory usage is never something for a user to worry about.

A youtube video and pretty much anything else should be enough to stress it pretty well.

Won't somebody think of the starving hamsters in China?

I just wanted to do a sanity check whether this seems a good offer:

MEDION AKOYA E1234T Tablet (MD 99400) - 199
* Windows 8.1 Update
* 10.1" Advanced Hyper Viewing Angle multitouch IPS 1920x1200 screen
* Intel Atom Z3735F
* 2GB RAM
* 64GB "internal flash memory" (I'm guessing this is the same as eMMC?)
* LiPo battery (~6hrs)
* 802.11n Wifi with Bluetooth 4.0
* 5mpx camera on the back, 2mpx camera on the front with microphone
* orientation sensor
* full size SDXC card reader
* 1x micro USB 2.0 (which is also the port to charge the tablet I'm assuming)
* 1x micro HDMI out
* 1x mic in/headphone out combo
* 1 year of Office 365 (no mention of the usual 1TB OneDrive)
* passive pen (just a cheap finger emulating thing I suppose)
* folio protective cover
* OTG cable
* 257mm x 174mm x 10mm / 598.5g

Considering the fact that the only sub-200 tablets they are willing to sell here are the Asus VivoTab 8, the Toshiba Encore 2 (WT8-B-102) and the HP Stream 7, which are all 1GB RAM/16GB storage affairs and everything else is either unavailable or 400 plus, this almost seems to be too good to be true. It's bigger and heavier than what I was looking at and the battery life doesn't seem spectacular. Anything else that jumps out at you guys?

They're going to have a matching bluetooth keyboard cover for 30 as well, which seems like a lot, but it's pretty hard to find bluetooth keyboards in the local layout in general, so I'm thinking of picking that up too.

Here's some weird news, Microsoft's rumored to launch the Surface 3...but without ARM and Windows RT.

WinBeta posted:

The Surface 2 is currently Microsofts latest iteration of its Windows RT based tablet line-up. Launching back in 2013, the Surface 2 was a vast improvement over the original Surface RT, and launched alongside the Surface Pro 2, giving consumers a choice between Windows RT and Windows 8.1.

So, when Microsoft announced the Surface Pro 3, the absence of a Surface 3 was peculiar. We know the company was planning to launch a Surface Mini, which was ultimately canceled just days before its planned unveiling. It became clear rather quickly that there was no intention of announcing a Surface 3 at all around that time.

WinBeta has learned that Microsoft is planning to launch a successor to the Surface 2 soon, however it wont be a Windows RT based device. The device will be fanless and sport a low spec'd CPU, being either an Intel ATOM or Intel Core M based processor (were not too sure which one theyve opted for just yet), meaning it will run a full-version of Windows. This is a first for the non-pro Surface line-up, and further solidifies reports regarding the death of Windows RT.

We expect Microsoft to announce this device sometime before/at BUILD, and will launch soon after, meaning the device will come pre-loaded with Windows 8.1. Of course, the device will be upgradable to Windows 10 when it officially launches, so early buyers need not be worried. We understand that Microsoft will market this new Surface as a non-pro device.

I don't think it's weird at all win RT is a unmitigated failure (there were only 3 devices ever made for the platform). I thought the SP4 would be fanless and a direct competitor to the new 12in MB bit instead this let's then launch a fanless Surface with a low power processor and still launch a very high power fan based system as the SP4. I think it's fantastic news for the ecosystem.
