Little late, but Haji Wright made his debut at the Indy Eleven game on Saturday. He looks like he has the potential to be very, very good, so it was cool to see that in person. I can't believe he's only 17. Also, I hope Indy and the Cosmos continue to draw against each other forever and ever.

I also just found out that I am traveling to NYC next week for work, and I want to catch the Cosmos game on Sunday. I'll be staying in the city without a car, but it looks like taking the LIRR and getting a shuttle from Mineola isn't that difficult. Has anyone on here done that? Is the shuttle pretty reliable?

Don't be daunted, the LIRR is super simple. When in doubt you can just follow the people in bright green cosmos gear.
They have buses to shuttle you before and after the game.

We've got a local soccer team in my city: The Thunder Bay Chill.

I know they're in the developmental league, and have had some success, so I was wondering if some MLS experts could clarify some things about how the "minors" work.

1) Is it like Euro leagues, where if you finish 1st, or win a playoff, you rise to the next league; or more like minor league baseball, where winning is nice, but you're stuck at your current level?

2) What kind of talent level am I looking at? I remember when the team first started up, looking at their roster, and seeing the names of guys who I knew were washed up in high school, fat and unmotivated. That being said, that was almost 20 years ago. Is it still just local guys hoping to get noticed and paid, or is there a chance I'll see very raw talent?

No promotion/relegation; you stay in your league. Some clubs buy in to a higher league eventually (such as USL and NASL teams "moving up" to MLS); sometimes clubs self-relegate to a cheaper/lower level league (this happens occasionally in USL).

I believe Thunder Bay Chill is PDL? That's basically a summer development league for college age players. So not even really a farm league (that would be USL which is turning into a farm league for MLS); PDL is more like junior hockey or the NBA development league, I guess; I don't really follow those other sports so may be a bit off on that.

I have not watched PDL level leagues but I suspect its mostly local guys hoping to get noticed and paid, or just trying to stay in match shape during the college off-season. If they are really good they are more likely nowadays to sign on to an MLS youth academy - or at least that's the theory.

I hope someone else watched the game last night between the Scorps and Railhawks. 6 goals, 3 penalties awarded, 11 yellow cards and 2 reds. Incredible.

Scorps went down a man early with a red card and penalty, Carolina scores again soon after making it 2-0. Scorps manage to draw one back short handed. 2-1.

They continue attacking all game creating over 9000 missed opportunities. Scorps get awarded a penalty which is saved nicely. Then get another penalty awarded plus a red to make it 10 on 10. Convert that penalty to draw even. Chavez then scores a screamer to pull ahead 3-2. In the 75th or so Carolina draw even. Plus there is a fight. Best Game Ever.

San Antonio takes the next step to attracting an MLS team

San Antonio announced this past Wednesday they are in pursuit of an Major League Soccer team the same day they lost a bid on hosting the College Football Championship game.

The news conference advised that the City and County purchased Toyota Field from owner Gordon Hartman for $18 million. Spurs Sports and Entertainment threw in $3 million of their funds as well.

Hartman is still the owner of the Scorpions who play in the North American Soccer League (NASL), however, Nelson Wolff indicated that the team will be on the move to different league soon.

The County Judge suggested a move to the United Soccer League (USL) is most likely. “They might very will be playing in the United Soccer league,” Wolff said.

Although the Toyota Field is publicly owned, Spurs, Sports and Entertainment will lease the facility for the next 20 years.

Busy couple of days for the Rowdies:

Tampa Bay Rowdies sign forward Tom Heinemann

http://www.saintpetersblog.com/archives/247418

The Tampa Bay Rowdies have added one of the most impressive goal scorers in the North American Soccer League with the addition of Tom Heinemann. The forward has signed a two-year contract, with a club option for the 2018 season. Per club and league policy, further contract details are not disclosed.

Heinemann is fresh off an appearance in the NASL’s Championship Final, where he scored two goals for Ottawa Fury FC in a 3-2 loss to the New York Cosmos. He also scored twice on Minnesota United FC in the semifinal round of The Championship, tallying four postseason goals in two games.

Freddy Adu re-signs with NASL's Tampa Bay Rowdies

http://www.si.com/planet-futbol/2015/12/15/freddy-adu-tampa-bay-rowdies-nasl

Freddy Adu finally appears to have found some stability.

The Tampa Bay Rowdies, which he joined in July, was Adu’s sixth team in three years (not including unsuccessful trials). Now he’ll be staying in central Florida for at least another season after agreeing to a new contract with the NASL club, SI.com understands. The Rowdies chose not to exercise the option they held for the 2016 campaign and instead offered the 26-year-old veteran a new deal that may cover multiple seasons. An official announcement is expected as early as Tuesday. [UPDATE: The Rowdies confirmed Adu's signing on Tuesday, a one-year deal with a club option for 2017].

Adu struggled with injuries and fitness after moving to Tampa Bay but found some form toward the end of the 2015 season. He finished with three assists in eight games (six starts) playing as either an attacking midfielder or withdrawn forward. On Oct. 10, he punctuated his return with this outstanding scoop pass to Brian Shriver for an 88th-minute equalizer against the Ottawa Fury.

Only thing I can think of is cost cutting measures since average attendance is less than 5k and it only holds 10.

Before Orlando City became an established MLS franchise and I became an active member of the US Soccer community I thought it would be intriguing to write my high school junior thesis paper on the Tampa Bay Rowides becoming an MLS franchise. The people who I cited in bringing this article together eventually became friends with me as this last year progressed. Now with Orlando's season at a close and a new Rowdies season set to begin here is the paper that never got published on my fully detailed and analyzed evaluation of why the Rowdies could and should be a successful MLS franchise should the ownership choose to head in that direction. At the time of this writing I still support ownership attempting to make the Rowdies a strong NASL force combining with other teams in an attempt to make a first division status..but that is an article for another time.
