I read some sociological study once of the goth subculture. Couple of interesting things. One, it tends to skew older. This is because goths don't age out of it as much as some other musical subcultures. (Don't believe it? Go to a goth-industrial bar. They're walking dead in more ways than one.) Hard to explain why. But the social scientist who did it guessed it's because goth is really just based around aesthetics and being mopey and sort of wistful. It's arguably not political at all, and most of this stuff is not really rebellious much. So as you get older and get a job and become kind of a boring middle-class person, it's not really irreconcilable to keep wearing black and listening to this stuff. They tone it down, though.

It also helps that the music genres involved are all pretty much dead, with the only notable releases coming from a few established acts that churn out albums every few years. New and somewhat original acts know to take a semi-ironic approach to the aesthetic and become part of the indie scene instead.
