Too lazy for anything fancy, but let's talk about how good Malkin looks tonight.

I wasn't happy about the Goc-for-Lapierre trade, but I really didn't appreciate just how terrible Lapierre is

Hornqvist, on the other hand :holy:

Goc was definitely better at puck possession but Lapierre's skills with the puck aren't bad. He's just not so good at keeping it.

I don't get this at all, sorry... every time Lapierre gets the puck on his stick he immediately loses it trying to be Wayne Gretzky

His skills are just standard replacement level skills but he plays even worse than that because he is apparently delusional and will not stop trying to deke like a superstar

It's maddening

PM: Bennett and Comeau are both in, Comeau assisted Hornqvist's goal :woop:

I noticed that last game, too. He absolutely refuses to defer - which is an admirable trait in like, Crosby or Malkin, but come the gently caress on, guy.

At risk of sounding like an hfboards poster, I wish Crosby would defer just a little bit less than he does, especially on the PP

Again, I'm not saying "lol Crosby doesn't have ~KILLER INSTINCT~", just that it might serve the team better if he passed 10% less and attacked the net 10% more

PM: Sill's out, yes :toot:

To be fair if my regular wingers were Zach Sill and Craig Adams I'd be reluctant to give them the puck too

That was pretty dumb that one game though where he had it and Pouliot was wiiiiiiiiide open and he was too caught up in his stick work to notice

It would be real nice to keep him since he clicks with Malkin but if he wants to go get paid somewhere he'll certainly be able to

The Penguins having the least cap space in the NHL does not help their desires to retain Comeau's services

Only one more goal away from being able to look forward to watching the Penguins blow a 3 goal lead!

I propose we call the Comeau - Malkin - Hornqvist the 777 line. Has that been used before?

Serious question: Why is Derrick Pouliot a defenseman? I ask because it is joyfully obvious he's very comfortable playing offense and painfully obvious he has no idea what to do on defense. He has skills but just in his body language it's plain to see that being in his own end makes him nervous as hell.

It's his first year in the NHL dude and he's still really young at 21. That coupled with the fact that he's more of an offensive dman and you have what you see. He'll probably never be great when the puck is off his stick but he's silly good with the puck on it so I don't think it will matter. His passing and poise are already better than any d on the Pens except for maybe Letang.

I 100% agree but I remain curious what it was/is that makes people think he can play defenseman any more than Comeau or somebody. It's not just the NHL either, he was regularly getting turnstiled in the AHL and showing the same cluelessness about where he's supposed to go and what he's supposed to do in his own end, it's the reason the talentless Scott Harrington was playing with the Penguins while Pouliot remained in the AHL for a while I believe.

I'm totally projecting without knowledge here, but to watch Pouliot play he doesn't look lazy like Mike Green or somebody, he looks overmatched, stressed and bewildered. Then he gets the puck on his stick and/or into the offensive end and he's a totally different player.

Well for one thing he presumably skates backwards and positions himself a whole lot better than any forward since he's been playing defense for probably his whole pro life. I think you're being perhaps a touch hyperbolic about his defensive abilities.

Furthermore he's already at 50% Fenwick - though with sheltered minutes. I just think he's going to be a guy like Letang or Karlsson in that when he's in his prime his offensive abilities will be so good that you just don't care about him occasionally getting overmatched by bigger forwards or occasionally looking confused defensively.

And I'm a bad assessment of junior talent but I'd be happy if Pouliot is just a slightly bigger Krug, which he seems to be on his way to doing.

Oh I agree. He's a great prospect. I'm just curious about what makes him tick and how fixable the defensive problems are, but even if he never fixes them he's going to be a good player

I mean we'll see. Just know that most d prospects aren't Olli Maatta. It's so rare to see guys come in and be that polished. I do know that Letang-Despres Maatta-Pouliot is going to be so sexy. And maybe throw Harrington into that mix as our bottom pair pk specialist.

Harrington, to me, has looked like a very steady d-man in the making. He could probably be our full-time 7 if he had to be.

Penguins are probably a bad matchup for the Red Wings, as the Penguins' big weakness is they're slow as hell but the Red Wings aren't speed demons either

That said they ARE flat as hell, they're playing like they're protecting a 3-0 lead rather than needing to come back from a 3-0 deficit
