DoD was the best. The maps I remember loving were caen, charlie, walmart, and legoland.

VVV There was a community ported dod_dust, it sucked.

I reinstalled the retail version because I couldn't figure out how to get 3.1 working with steam. I instantly found a nearly full dod_caen server that I ended up playing a single match for an hour, it hasn't changed a bit.

RO really owns and one of my best gaming memories was teaming up with a stranger in a tank and going on a 5 tank killing spree, but DoD scratches a different itch. RO is more spergy and slow paced where as DoD is arcadey and faster.

DoD:S is fine, but it was half assed. Half the weapons, no brits, barely any maps, etc. Plus the typical GoldSrc -> Source growing pains. I remember being hyped as gently caress from this trailer though:

Also DoD is by far the best implementation of the whole point capture multiplayer FPS thing. Battlefield is the current popular iteration but it's just a clusterfuck of who cares. DoD was tight, focused, and good.

To follow up RO chat: People are playing Mare Nostrum right now. This group is good for knowing whenever people are playing Mare Nostrum, as well as this one for when they play Darkest Hour, although I think Darkest Hour still has a couple healthy servers.

Don't make me loving reinstall darkest hour only to find out it's dead. I checked it periodically since RO2 came out and at most there were a dozen or two players at peak time. It was my favourite WW2 game for a long time :(

The 29th ID server is half full right now, it is pretty much everytime I check.

Wasn't Caen a British map at some point? Did they change it back to American vs. Germans at some point?

It was always british as far as I know. Flash was a good tight british map too.

Hostile Intent was also pretty cool. It was the typical counter-terrorism thing except it played more like Rainbow Six instead of Counter Strike.

half life spawned so many good mods man, holy poo poo

has any other game afterwards come even close to replicating so many offshoots

Idk Source brought a lot of cool stuff too, not limited to half-assed rehashes of awesome GoldSrc mods.

The old Battlefields also had a bunch of mods but not quite on the level of GoldSrc/Source.

Also Insurgency is technically a sourcemod, which also happens to be the best tacticlol sperg shooter around these days.
