Why couldn't the first adults only game on Steam be some sort of awesome CYOA porn game?

At first I was kind of looking forward to this because it looked like a clone of the original Postal, and Postal was a fun game. Then the trailer came out and it started looking more like Postal except with no self-awareness of how dumb it is.

Dunno which boundary you think needs crossing. Didn't they originally threaten to give Fahrenheit/Indigo Prophecy an AO rating for some of the least sexy sex scenes ever animated?

Hatred is a game I have no desire to play, didn't ask to be greenlighted and still wont play. But I'm glad it was greenlit and is coming out because people should be allowed to make whatever games they loving want. If there is an audience that will buy it, it is a success. If there is no audience for it, it will be a failure. Let people vote with their wallets.

Since both this and Revolution 60 got Greenlit, I'm going to assume Valve is a non-partisan seller of dumb shlock made for "important" reasons.

At least with CoD and such there's some sort of justification given for why you're killing people, however flimsy. It is rare for the premise of a game to be killing people who are explicitly innocent, which is dumb and bad.

It is rare for the premise of a game to be killing people who are explicitly innocent, which is dumb and bad. You seem to be misunderstanding something. I'm not saying Hatred is a good game, because it doesn't interest me at all, it's not my kind of game. GTA and CoD also aren't my kind of games. I'm saying it doesn't matter. It's a game. That's all it is, if we can have postal 1, which certainly wasn't a parody, released then we can have Hatred. And just like the Postal games didn't produce a generation of serial killers, Hatred wont either. It is not dumb or bad because of what it is. It'll probably be dumb and bad because it honestly doesn't look like much fun. It's rated for adults, so if you don't have faith in your fellow adults to not indulge in a crap isometric shooter you should probably stop paying attention to anything and just focus on yourself. Which actually isn't a bad suggestion because I was much happier when all I cared about was "What am I going to play" rather than "Does this game that doesn't interest me at all require the people who buy it to be put on a list." Maybe we do need Jack Thompson back so people can remember the dumb poo poo we just passed through. Though I guess it never really ended...

lfield posted:are there any limits to this? would it be okay to release a game where you kidnap children and torture them? or rape women to death or something Sure, Ifield, I mean I doubt anyone will buy it and they'll likely be rated A/O which means stores will refuse to sell it, and unless you got it greenlit I doubt you'd make a buck on it and it would be considered a complete failure. Also if your game does something that would make it be considered something illegal like child pornography then you will likely be unable to release it through any official means. But in the end, it's just a game, and movies like that exist, they aren't good movies, and I would not recommend watching them but they exist. Books like that exist, and they may be horrible books, but they still exist. And hell the games you have suggested likely already exist. And you know what? the world has not given a gently caress.
