Pit bulls have a notoriously strong prey drive, are generally not very great with smaller animals (or other dogs), and if your landlord includes them in their banned breed list, it is a terrible idea to lie to them and expect them to not evict you or fine you or something similar. I would never recommend one for someone living in an apartment with a small child and also a cat. I also really really think the shelter did a terrible job placing the dog if they didn't even ask to see your rental agreement to check their banned breed list. No one's hurt dude, you're the one freaking out and using words like "sophomoric" unironically FYI I had a HW positive dog with a severe case (CHF by the time it was caught) when I was growing up who recovered and went on to live another 9 years (he was about 6 at the time of treatment.) His medical costs were about 2k, but that was around 15 years ago, so YMMV. Other than that, never, ever leave the dog alone with the cat unsupervised. Research prey drive management and plan accordingly and you should be fine. I'm currently managing two APBTs around livestock and they're doing well, but that can change in an instant. It did for me when I let my guard down for one moment after years of flawless management and it cost me a puppy and a cat. They're extremely rewarding dogs when you're realistic and educated about what they're for, how they work, and what that means management-wise.

I'm not a pit-type dog nerd (my thing is working huskies and other sled dogs), but I know about/have experience with dogs with extremely high prey drives and poo poo and I think the best decision you could make would be to return the dog and get another lab or something. Most of what you read on the internet is rescuemommy trash-- none of it is actually rooted in anything resembling real science, and is largely based on a sort of perverse, blindly ignorant optimism that they seem to need in order to function. What Super and BWI have told you is coming from a tremendous backing of very real experience and knowledge. While you may have found the tone offensive, you've also been on SA for over 10 years and should honestly have grown a thick enough skin or some other poo poo to be able to handle it. Stop being a big dumb baby. Stop throwing a big dumb baby tantrum. Listen to the people that know better. They're right, and it's in your best interest to do so.

To be perfectly honest I've always been of the opinion in that it's all how you raise them. Yes drive is a thing but I don't really think that it's applicable here. I'm sure that the OP has considered all of the things that BWI and that uncouth Supercondescending (lol) have thought of and I bet that he's just really excited to bring his dog home.  OP I hope that you and your brand new pet have a bunch of fun years together and I hope you don't get probated for this big misunderstanding. This seems so silly to me. Maybe Super's just had a really bad day, or something's up and she doesn't really mean it all that way.  PI is a cool place to ask stuff about pets and you totally should keep this thread open. While I usually prefer to buy my dogs, I think rescuing is a great thing to do too and I'm happy that you did it. I think that you should post more pics of the dog and cat together after they have time to bond. Maybe they could have a neat thread like Tycho and Refurb do. Puppies. Rainbows. Kittens. Okinawa.

I literally could not walk my aunt's staffy because he pulled like a motherfucker and I knew I couldn't stop him if poo poo went down with other dogs (usually started by the other dog but definitely finished by him). Of course I am risk adverse and ended up with a sheltie as my First Dog As An Adult. He is a yappy shitmachine but his temperament was a perfect match for us, his prey drive is sufficiently low so the cats are safe, he's smart and can pick up on my fumbling attempts to train him, and underpinning all that he is not big/strong enough to do serious damage if it all goes south.
