There could be a lot of interpretations. At the time when I was much younger the quote struck me since I was seeking more self-control and discipline in my life. Of course there are general opposing philosophies, such as, "Live for today, who cares what happens later?". "Do what feels good, man" (of course I'm overly simplifying and poorly paraphrasing).

The discipline quote could be more relevant to people with extreme cases of compulsion or addiction. For example a drug addict can become a slave to the addiction to where it destroys their life, and possibly the lives of others.

One interpretation could be, "All good things in moderation", at least those things that can reasonably and safely be experienced.

The liberty part could mean building up one's mental fortitude and insight, being able to think and make decisions clearly without emotional influence or bias from one's own character flaws or weaknesses.

But, I did pull it from a science fiction story, so what I am saying could be all :vomarine:
