The Star Trek Adventure Game

After my Birth of the Federation LP I had a craving for more Star Trek and found this old game boxed up. I am simplifying this board game to turn it into a more straightforward Choose Your Own Adventure Game which should work for an LP. When played as a two player game the game has a board and you fly a number of ships around trying to win planets over. The game also includes Klingon assassins and Federation diplomats and random events. This would be hard to make work in an LP we are going straight to the meat of the game, the planetary explorations.

The game will pit two teams against each other: The Federation and the Klingons.

The game begins months after the "Battle" of Organia. The Federation and Klingon fleets met to decide the future of the quadrant.

Down on the planet Kirk and Spock fought a guerilla action against a Klingon occupation force until the native Organians revealed that they were powerful energy beings and, disgusted at the conflict, forced a peace. The Federation and the Klingons were forbidden to wage war and the Organian Peace Treaty imposed a zone between the two powers. Under the terms of the treaty outright conflict is not allowed but both sides move in to explore the planets and sway them to their side.

Resources

Each side possesses a starship for exploration, an assortment of officers, and a number of expendable security guards. Each officer has one or more abilities.

Important: Note that these are TOS Klingons. They are brutal, treacherous, and harsh in the style of stereotypical villains of the 60s and 70s and not the honorable warriors TNG eventually made Klingons into. They do have a sense of honor but it is of a different sort then that valued by Worf.

Rules

There are 40 planets in the game so 20 each. I will randomly select one for each ship to explore and then give you a briefing and your options. This will not be a particularly intricate game. If one group finishes up their planet first they wait until the other side finishes.

If you want to participate please Bold which side you want to join and then vote in bold. Sometimes you will have the option to select a landing party. In that case vote for one you want someone else has proposed or propose your own. When you make decisions you may have additional options available to you based on the skills of the landing party (and sometimes the skills of those left on the ship). Some options are also only available to the Federation or the Klingons.

After every 4 planets you get back two security guards and one dead officer of your choice. At the end of the game we will tally up how many planets are gained and their value and the gained reputation of each crew.

Some Tips:

There are results that kill the whole landing party so beaming down every officer you have is dangerous. It is usually a good idea to include a few security guards. Some events require you to lose a number of people and it is best to let the poor redshirts take the fall.

Many of the adventures are similar to those shown in TOS. Some are subtly or blatantly different even though they use similar characters. Please do not discuss the episode the current planet is based on or give advice based on it until after the planet is over. Feel free to vote based on that knowledge though. It might help. I cannot guarantee the planets will be distributed fairly. This is about the experience, not a ruthless test of skill.

If you have the game and decide to look up the answers so you can win an CYOA LP then Buzz Lightyear has some counsel for you:

"You are a sad, strange little man. And you have my pity."

Seriously, just don't.

Anyways on to the game!

Captain's Log, Stardate 2743.2: We are beginning our exploration of the Organian sector, which lies between Earth and the Klingon Empire. Although largely unexplored, it is neutralized by the Organian Treaty, so direct conflict with the Klingons is prohibited. With eager anticipation and high hopes, we start our search for peace and friendship...

Spock's report on the planet:

When previously contacted, Ekos was inhabited by a violent but primitive and highly intelligent people. A cultural and historical team had been sent to study it, headed by the well-respected Professor Katarian. Nearly two years ago, subspace contact with Katarian's team was lost. We have been sent to investigate

Surveillance Report, 3/45/Year 6 of the Reign: We are penetrating the Organian sector, which lies between Klinzhai and the Federation. Although largely unexplored, it is neutralized by the g'dyatin glowbug Organians, so war with the Federation is forbidden. With heads held high and eager for battle, we start our search for glory and honor...

Cestus III: On the outskirts of the Cestus system, our ship has been hailed by another space vessel. It is a large, delta-winged craft. The captain of the ship appears to be descended from an avian race - he has a beaked face and wings as well as small arms and clawed feet.

The captain announced that his ship was "Starship Farseer of Windhasten Clan". He asked us to identify ourselves, and we complied. He asked permission to board our ship for discussions. About 20 of the aliens arrived on a shuttlecraft. The alien captain listened attentively as we welcomed him aboard. Several of the aliens are armed.

What do you do?

A) Attempt to open Cestus III to trade with the Empire.
B) Attempt to persuade the aliens to join the Empire.
C) Attempt to capture the alien party.

Okay, on we go:

Mission 1, 2nd Decision
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Federation

Kirk assembles with Spock and McCoy and beams down with two well-trained redshirts who are in way nervous at being selected for landing party duty. That whole "ship of death" rumor about the Enterprise is surely blown out of all proportion. The landing party quickly moves out to investigate.

Since last contact the people of Ekos have developed an advanced industrial society with a planetary government. We are disturbed, however, that this society contains elements borrowed from Earth history, including gladiatorial games, team sports, and Code Duello (rules for duelling).

What do you do?

A) Visit a rugby game and question people about Katarian.
B) Visit a gladiatorial contest and search for Katarian.
C) Contact the Ekosian authorities and ask for their help in finding Katarian.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Klingons

The order is given to capture the aliens.

The Gwynhyfarr, as the aliens are called, resisted but we overcame them. A single warrior was lost in the battle. When the alien captain failed to respond to hails from its ship the ship fled. To prevent them from learning of our actions our battlecruiser pursued and caught the ship and destroyed it in several bursts of disruptor fire. The alien captain was taken alive and, in the agonizer booth, revealed extensive information about the Gwynhyfarr homeworld and its military defenses. Our single battlecruiser could not conquer it alone but this data will help the Empire when the conquest is ordered.

The Klingons score +2 to their political score for gaining the intel and +2 to their reputation for their actions and lost one warrior. Cestus III will remain neutral.

The Klingons finished up early but that was a decent ending.

We will see how the Federation does.

What does reputation do?

In the full game whoever has more reputation at the end gets to take extra turns. In this version both of them combined will be used to determine victory. Planets also provide political point if they incline towards you afterwards or if they join the Federation or the Empire. The points vary depending on how developed the world is.

Episode 1, Part 3
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Federation

Kirk wanted to see the Rugby game and Spock and McCoy began arguing over the merits of athletic competition.

We visited a rugby game between the Kronos Killers and Damlin United. Damlin United won; after the game a riot broke out, as fans of the rugby rivals battled through the streets of the city.

Kirk takes Command and keeps the party together in the wild melee that follows. Eventually the team escaped to a bar where Kirk convinced the clientele that we are not fans of the Killers. They stood us a round of drinks. We learned that Katarian is Commissioner of the Ekos Planetary Rugby League.

We get directions after the riot dies down and meet with him.

Katarian said that he had to come to love Ekos, and, despite the Prime Directive, had wished to help the planet. He had introduced gladiatorial sports, team sports, and dueling as healthy outlets for their violent instincts. He was successful; warfare has ended. He is willing to return to the Federation to stand trial.

As we depart a normal post-mission discussion is held on the bridge where we weigh the merits of the prime directive. In this case it seems interference succeeded in helping. It is true that interference has destroyed cultures but have we learned enough to interfere intelligently?

The Enterprise crew gains +2 to Reputation and +2 to Political influence with the friends made but the planet will stay neutral.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What might have been?

Federation:

If you go to the gladiator games you show up at the television studio and are drafted into the fighting. If you have no one with personal combat 3 crew are lost. If you do have the skill you win and meet Katarian with the same results as the rugby game.

If you go to the authorities you are arrested as loons claiming to be from the stars. If you have logic you demonstrate your equipment and prove your story and get the result above. If you do not you are arrested but the news picks up the story of the arrested spacemen and the ship picks it up and beams you out. You lose Reputation and Political point.

Klingons:

If you attempt to open up trade the crew says they are not interested but other clans may be and you can send merchant to infiltrate their culture and gain 1 each Reputation and Politics.

If you try to convince them to join the Empire they are confused and it becomes clear they do not understand any form of government beyond their simple clan structure.

If you have science you figure out they have no stable government and can convince them to trade scientific parties. You can control what theirs see and you get spies. Same score as we achieved.

If you do not have Science then you misunderstand and refuse their request thinking they want to send in spies. The commander leaves in a huff but you learned that they have no central government which will make conquest easier and you get half the points (+1 to each).

No matter what happens West End Games reveals that this alien race came from another game of theirs. I have heard of the game but never played it. It is a 3-player wargame designed to avoid the "gang up" problem. A friend I know who has played it likes it. It is called "Web and Starship"

892-IV: This system is the last reported position of the Blaze, a vessel in the Merchant Marine, commanded by an old friend of many of our crew.

A scan of probable orbits shows debris and wreckage. Spock and Scotty have examined the wreckage and and it appears to have been struck by a meteor when its shields were down. We have recovered the ship's log buoy which reports no chance of survival.

However, the inhabitants of this planet, who have developed a Roman-like culture, have recovered intact wreckage and is being worshipped as a manifestation from the gods. We have to recover them. What should we do?

A) We have a poor locational fix but we believe we can beam the artifacts up directly.
B) Beam down a party to sneak into the temple and steal the artifacts.
C) Beam down a party disguised as traders to buy the artifacts.

Note that in the latter two cases you will need to also select who to beam down.

Taurus II: One year ago an Imperial starship left an anthropologist on the planet to study the indigenous population and determine the suitability of these people to serve the Empire. We have been ordered to the planet to contact him, find out how the mission is going, and provide supplies and any assistance he may need.

We arrived to find that Kohen, the anthropologist, has gone native and abandoned his studies. He is now the medicine man of a nomadic tribe and has polluted Klingon blood by taking a native wife. He has also begun to teach Taurians the secrets of rudimentary technology: the wheel, the lever, irrigation, and more.

He must be stopped. He is changing the culture of the planet and if the Federation finds out and tells the Organians there may be hell to pay.

We need to assemble a landing party and give them their orders.

A) Arrest Kohen.

Kirk, Spock, and Scotty beam down with a pair of targets in red shirts to steal back the artifact.

The party dresses like the local priests. The group was discovered inside the temple when Kirk made the bold step of declaring they were the gods come down to retrieve their lost property. His Charisma allowed him to pull off the ruse and the artifact was beamed back up. When they return McCoy makes a pointed reference about a pointy-eared being claiming to be a god when mythology shows that that is a demonic attribute.

Reputation +1 Political Score +1, planet is neutral.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Klingons

Korax, Valara, Kor, and two guards beam down to the planet to apprehend Kohen.

When the force moved in to arrest Kohen the warriors of the tribe assembled to battle us. We killed dozens but our two guards were killed by spears in the melee and our party fell to squabbling without a competent leader. The lack of Command coordination allowed Kohen to escape and we were forced to beam up to the ship to escape. When we returned his tribe had fled and we have no way of locating them as they know the terrain and how to hide in ways we cannot match.

Reputation -2 Political Score -1 planet is neutral.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What might have been:

Federation:

If you beam up the artifacts Scotty gives a bonus and you roll dice. We would have a slightly better then 50/50 chance of beaming them up and getting a +1 in each score as the natives just see it as a divine manifestation.

If we arrived without someone with charisma we would need to come down without security guards to succeed. Klingons can succeed by using Ruthless to kill interfering priests.

If we tried to bargain with Spock as one of the traders we lose as his logic offends the religious fanatics. If we came without Logic and brought Kirk his skills in seduction would allow him to seduce the less-then-celibate high priestess and get best possible result. Without skills we lose.

Klingons:

If we had arrested with someone with Command we would have won a minor victory.

If we had tried to persuade him to return he would refuse saying he is happier. If someone has the Lying skill we can him the Empire is pleased with his work and want to arm his tribe so he can conquer and rule the planet he will agree to return to the ship to get assistance. Then we stick him in the agonizer booth and take him home for interrogation.

If you kill him you gun him down and his warriors attack. If no one has Personal Combat they kill 2 Klingons and you gain and lose nothing. If you have Personal Combat you gun down his warriors too and win.

They wish to build android bodies for themselves, but they need to borrow three of our bodies if we give permission for them to do so. In return they promise to give us the knowledge their culture had accumulated.

You stay overnight in a hotel in the capitol. The Minister of the Interior met with us there. Over tequila, he hinted that the Empire might receive valuable dilithium mining concessions in return for aid in a coup to topple the President.

Late at night, three men with primitive firearms break into our hotel room through a window. They are rebel guerillas fighting a campaign against the government from the mountains. They ask for the Empire's aid against the corrupt regime. They also offered direct payments of resources in exchange for Klingon weapons.

Thalassa and Henoch come to the ship to build the bodies but Henoch decides to keep his body. Thalassa turns on him and both die in the battle, leaving their borrowed bodies. Sargon commits suicide, planning to seek Thalassa in the next life.

Crew gains Politics +1 and reputation +1.

Klingons

The Klingons decide to arm the guerillas.

Several crates of advanced weapons are sold and the following day the guerillas attack the capitol using their new disruptors.

Korax uses his skill in Treachery to place Klingons amongst the guerillas as "advisors". By the time the war is over Klingons are in key positions. Since the guerilla leader was dangerously independent an incident was arranged in which he became "a martyr to the cause of liberty" and installed a pro-Klingon ruler in his place. The new regime publicly thanks the Klingon Empire for its assistance and expels the Federation resident. A treaty granting the Empire mining rights is signed. Unfortunately 2 warriors were killed and Varozh was wounded during the fighting and is no longer usable for a while.

Crew gains Reputation +1 and Politicas +2 and the planet is inclined towards the Empire.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

What Might have Been

If the Federation refuses to give up their bodies Sargon attempts a direct telepathic takeover. If you do not have telepathy they take 3 bodies and the ship refuses to beam them up and Sargon is enraged and wipes out the whole landing party. If you have telepathy you ward off the attack and beam out. Minor victory. If you agree to give up the bodies you pick 3 people and go on. Hennoch poisons the body with Sargon in it and if you have Medicine you catch it and save him and get the highest score. If you do not have Medicine Sargon dies and Thalassa and Hennoch kill each other and the bodies they currently inhabit and lose.

If the Klingons bribe the President they meet secretly after dark but a car spots the meeting and drives off. If you have Ruthlessness you kill the driver and win but get less then we got. If you do not have Ruthlessness and the bribe is exposed and the planet inclines towards the Federation. If you aid the Minister and do not have Intimidation the Minister uses your help but denies collusion and expels you from the planet. If you do have it you can blackmail the President into collusion and betray the Minister. If you kidnap the Federation Resident you frame the guerillas and succeed but get a very minor reward.

We refused to give up and were quartered for the night. During the evening we were visited by a succession of people in variously colored uniforms and each asking for something or offering evidence of treason against one of the others that could be used to cause "Friend Computer" to terminate them. The only things we are now sure of is that the entire planet is run by a computer at war with "Commie Mutant Traitors" and that the closer your uniform is to the ultraviolet end of the spectrum the more highly ranked you are.

We were led to a secret room full of men with thick glasses and stringy hair, tapping away with on computer terminals. Their garments are orange, yellow, and green. They regard our black uniforms with distaste for some reason and call us "Infrareds". With our skill in Science and a tie-in to the ship's computer we alter the computer's programs with the help of the Phreaks.

Roll a d6 and add one if we have treachery (which we do). 1d6 = 3 +1 = 4

We suspected the Phreak leader of treachery so we secretly added proof of his treason to the data we fed to the computer. Soon Internal Security agents arrived and arrested him to be taken to a confession booth. The computer now accepts the Klingon Empire as Alpha Complex and the Federation are now labeled as Commie Mutant Traitors. This world is now a satellite of the Klingon Empire. Many Troubleshooters volunteer to serve the Empire and their R&D department has given us many pieces of advanced weaponry to use in the future.

We get 2 reputation, no political points, but gain 3 points for bringing a Type A planet into full alliance with the Empire.

What Might have been:

If the Federation tries to trade metal for membership they fail unless they have logic. If they have logic the planet will agree to incline towards the Federation and you get some points. If you do not have logic they attack to steal your advanced technology and you lose points and take casualties. If you try to trade with a merchant you need science or medicine to find local plants of value to succeed.

If the Klingons try to give up and leave a jamming field is put in place as the computer has not authorized you to leave and leaving without permission is treason. If someone on the ship has Engineering they can break through the faulty field. If you have Charisma and Intimidation you can convince the tribunal that you have treasonous dirt on them and secure your release. If you have nothing then the entire party is never heard from again and the planet signals the ship that the party was executed for treason and they recommend you activate their next clones. The planet can be summed up by one ending: "The inhabitants of this planet may be irredeemably deranged."

Cygnia Minor: The planet is inhabited by hominids, goat-faced and sporting a pair of antennae. The culture is neolithic. Agriculture is extensive but the natives have yet to develop any metalworking technology. Near the east coast of the main continent, at the confluence of two rivers, is a huge city, through which are scattered giant step pyramids so large they can be seen with the naked eye from orbit.

Episode 5, Part 2

Federation

We decide to negotiate. Stalling for time, we ask the Troyians what they hope to gain by holding a Federation starship hostage. They replied, "Do not concern yourself with our quarrels. Give us the Dohlman and leave."

We replied that we had orders to follow and could not deviate from them. It was a pretty stalemate.

Spock scanned the ships and used Logic to realize that the Troyian fleet had no chance against the weaponry and defenses of the Enterprise and they must have some other plan. Security was dispatched to the Dohlman. They arrived just in time to find one of the Dohlman's personal guard holding her at phaserpoint and preparing to beam over to the fleet. Security stunned the traitor and we launched a spread of unarmed photon torpedoes to scatter the fleet. Now it is up to High Command to straighten out the mess.

Gain 3 political points and 1 reputation and the planet stays neutral.

Klingons

Koloth and Valara prepare to beam down with 2 warriors. As we enter orbit a satellite of alien manufacture contacts us and says: "This is an experimental planet of Donatus & Quiglik Inc. All rights reserved. Trespassers will be prosecuted." There are two isolated cultures on the planet on two widely separated continents. One is urbanized and uses plains agriculture; the other builds pyramids and grows its crops along the banks of a huge river.

What do we do?

A) Beam party to urban civilization.
B) Beam party to river civilization.
C) Destroy the obnoxious satellite

Sorry for delay. Real life gets in the way of important stuff.

Klingons

We fired on and destroyed the buoy. Suddenly an energy shield expanded outwards from the planet, smashing our ship outwards from the system. Our Navigation expertise kept the ship from being destroyed. All efforts to break through the shield fail.

We lose 1 reputation and 2 political points and the planet is neutral.

What might have been

If the Federation surrenders the Dohlman there is a 2/3rds chance they take her and leave and Starfleet orders you to next assignment. You lose political points but no reputation. There is a 1/3 chance the fleet will attack. If you have ship combat you defeat the fleet and gain a lot of reputation but lose political points. Without the skill you lose both and the planet leans towards the Klingons. In either case the ship is damaged.

If the Federation fights the fleet and has Ship Combat you win the fight and the government insists the attackers were pirates or rebels and the evidence supports the claim. Gain lots of reputation and some political points.

If the Klingons beam down to the urban civilization they meet less bloodthirsty Phoenicians. If you have no skills you find nothing of interest and leave. No change to anything. If you have command you find they have a sophisticated understanding of supply and demand provided by the god Donatus in his book "The Wealth of Peoples". You meet Donatus and find he is a powerful energy being and he and his colleague Quiglik disagreed over whether the scientific method or market economics are more vital to a primitive culture and founded two cultures to experiment. Klingons decide the planet is useless and leave and get minor points.

If you beam to the river pyramid civilization and have Science you meet Quiglik and his book "Knowing" which lays our methods of experimentation. You decide they are worthless as above.

Cheron: Cheron has never been contacted before. Radio astronomers in nearby star systems have noticed an outpouring of modulated radio waves from the planet in recent years. This is thought to be a sure sign of an emerging technological civilization.

As our ship entered the system sensors report the presence of heavy space traffic. Many ships travel between Cheron and nearby planets and asteroids. The Cheronian ships are powere by fusion - a primitive technology used by races before the development of warp drive. Our science officer reports that our shields can protect us from all detections systems in use.

What do we do?

A) Shields up and take up orbit around Cheron.
B) Shields up and capture a small Cheronian freighter for study.
C) Contact Cheron by radio and demand their immediate surrender to the Klingon Empire.

Kirk, Spock, McCoy, and Uhura beam down with 2 security guards. The negotiations continue but they stubbornly insist they will not let their resources be used for war. An approaching ion storm requires the landing party to beam up to the ship immediately for a time.

The transporter malfunctions, perhaps because of the ion storm, and has placed us in a strange parody of our own world. In this savage world the Federation resembles a pirate empire. Assassination and death are commonplace. Here, they plan to destroy the Halkans to seize their resources.

What do we do?

A) Work in secret attempting to duplicate the conditions that caused the transfer and return to your own world.
B) Openly ask the inhabitants of this universe for help since it is in their benefit to restore the natural balance.
C) Persuade the inhabitants of this universe to seek peaceful means rather then violent ones.

It is worth noting that if the Klingons get this one they find themselves on an unarmed ship where violent tendencies get you taken to a psychiatrist. They can choose to take over the Klingon Empire in this alternate universe and succeed with ease.

Klingons

We located a small one-man prospecting ship and intercepted it and easily captured it. He resisted capture and killed one of our warriors before being caught. He is a shapeshifter; he can only assume quadrupedal forms and cannot change in size but with these restrictions can assume virtually any shape.

We intercepted frantic messages from Sht'kl'p space control to the missing prospector. Several ships from nearby asteroid colonies are heading towards us to find the missing ship. The Cheronian ships are far too slow to catch us if we flee.

What should we do?

A) Flee
B) Stand the Fight
C) Drop our shields and explain things to Space Control.

Federation

We cautiously introduced the concept of peace to this savage Empire "Federation". The opposition is almost religious in its intensity.

Using the Captain's Charisma and Spock's logic we see some hope. Although we had to appeal to their greed to do so, some of the crew are beginning to see that such a violent society is doomed to destruction. We left believing that the Halkans of that Universe will not die and returned to our own. On hearing our story the Halkans agreed to limited trade.

We get 2 Reputation, 2 Political points, and the planet is inclined towards the Federation.

Klingons

We destroy the pursuing ships. The planet retaliated with orbital laser platforms. While primitive they are incredibly powerful and the ship was forced to retreat to avoid the lasers penetrating our shields. We lose 1 Political point and the planet inclines towards the Federation.

What Might Have Been

If the Federation had tried to find a way home you need Charisma or Personal Combat. If you have those you get home and get a reward...though a lesser reward. If you do not have either you lose 3 people. If you request aid openly and have Logic, Science, and Engineering you can convince them you are a danger to their Universe and they send you home. If you do not have all three you are arrested and lose the whole landing party. There is a path on this planet where the Klingons are arrested and taken to a very comfortable sanitarium and humanely treated and they lose their landing party.

If the Klingons had put up their shield and gone into orbit you find out war has not reached the planet for 3 centuries. They eventually find the ship and attack it with lasers unless you have Communications. If you have Communications you find out that they are a neat and orderly society and to alleviate their wariness you leave and reenter the system openly. Space control orders you to go to a gas giant. If you go they hold a media debate over whether to let you in and let your captain speak. If you have Charisma, Logic, Lying, or Intimidation they become inclined towards the Empire. If you refuse to go they attack.

If they capture the freighter and flee you lose reputation for cowardice. If you capture the freighter and then contact space control they demand the immediate return of their prospector and his ship. If you agree they demand an explanation and if you have Charisma or Lying you explain away the incident and they become inclined to the Empire. If not they compel you to leave.

Finally if you contact them openly and demand their immediate surrender they fire their weapons and you get the result we ended up getting.

Excalbia: Excalbia is an uncharted planet with a poisonous atmosphere and extreme surface temperatures. While conducting a routine survey we were subject to a swift and deep probe of our computer system. Then, before us on the viewscreen appeared an image claiming to be Abraham Lincoln, asking permission to come aboard our ship.

We received Lincoln aboard with full Presidential honors but he breathlessly explained that he was being pursued and he would explain later but that we must leave the system immediately. Although suspicious the captain ordered a course out of the system. As the navigator laid in the coordinates illusions of strange asteroids appeared. We cannot tell anymore what is real and what is not and moving the ship would be dangerous.

What do we do?

A) Attempt to navigate through the illusory asteroids.
B) Attack the planet in the hopes of ending the illusion.
C) Take no action and question Lincoln further.

Kirk confronts Lincoln and demands to know what is going on. Lincoln is evasive but admits that this is a test by a group of superior beings. The crew all rolled their eyes. Just another day on the Enterprise. Why the hell does every superior being in the Universe insist on testing us and then wandering off?

Lincoln offers a hint in a manner suggesting that we will score higher if we do not use the hint. Chekhov using his navigation ability remembers the position off all the real hazards and we fly through the illusory asteroids and escape the system. Lincoln smiles and the illusions and Lincoln fade away. His final words were: "You have passed the test and showed your ingenuity. You may return in peace."

We send a report to Starfleet and wonder what kind of superior being feels that winning a game of Memory proves anything. We gain 3 reputation and 1 Politics. The planet stays neutral.

The planet is sparsely populated and mostly covered by ice. We visited the castle of a lord who granted us the right to trade for our herbs. He warned us to avoid the moors at night, telling us we would be prey for "werewolves and other dire spirits" if we did.

He also told us of the centuries-long war his domain has fought with the Chortchek, a land to the south.

What should we do?

B) Obtain the herbs and then spend a night on the moors to investigate these werewolves.

The injury appeared minor but the next day his hair began to grow, his teeth grew sharper, and he became vicious. It appears Lycanthropy is a real disease on this planet. We attempted to treat the disease but failed and were forced to kill the warrior.

Gain no Reputation or political points.

What might have been

If the Federation attempted to navigate the asteroids without first questioning Lincoln you get the same result as questioning Lincoln. If you attack the planet the illusions fade and Lincoln fades away saying, "Too random, too violent." You win but get fewer points.

If the Klingons had had Medicine (impossible as no Klingon officers have the skill they could have cured the bitten warrior and won. If they had traded for the herbs and left they would have won a minor victory. If you offer to fight with the locals and do not have bravery you arm them with hand weapons and begin training them and they grow incensed at this dishonorable form of combat, confiscate the herbs and your weapons, and force you to leave and you lose. If you have Bravery you realize that ultra-advanced weaponry would offend their sense of honor and instead give them gunpowder and cannons and they eagerly use it. Win a near-total victory with 2 points of each and the planet inclines towards the Klingons.

His story:

He was a crewman on a trading ship. One day, while making repairs in space, he saw an organism shaped like a manta ray floating in space and killed it. From that day on the ship was plagued with bad luck. Ray-like creatures surrounded the ship. They moved it through space. Some of the crew went mad and all blamed the man. They strung the creature he had killed around his neck, put him in a space-suit, and spaced him. The creatures freed the ship and hauled the old man among the stars, seemingly for years. He nearly went mad. Finally they brought him to this world and left him here. He ended with: "This is my tale spacemen and this is my moral: kill not the eldritch space-ray, lest my ill-luck fall on you.

He the gave us the ryetalin we needed and bade us depart.

We beamed the Ryetalin aboard and broke orbit but as we left the system a host of creatures that look like manta-rays surrounded the ship. We lost helm control and the creatures are guiding us to an unknown destination. McCoy commented, "I wonder if ancient mariners had to deal with problems like this."

The rays are very alien and almost completely incomprehensible. They offer to take us out of the system but tell us we must never return to Holberg 917.

Gain 2 Reputation and 2 political points.

What might have been

If the Federation ignores the old man and gather the ryetalin themselves the old man is angry and tells us to beware the space rays. You lose 2 people to the fever as it takes a while to gather the Ryetalin. You then go to the decision point when the rays arrive. If you try to persuade him to give you the Ryetalin he agrees if you agree to listen to his story afterwards. If you accept you go down the decision tree we did. If you refuse you lose 2 crewmen as above and have to gather it yourself.

When dealing with the rays if you fire on them you kill one and then they use telekinetic powers to disable your weapons and initiate your self-destruct. You have to beam down to the planet and the ship is destroyed. In the base game you could send another ship to pick up the crew. If you let the crews haul you around they telepathically discern where you planned to go next and take you there. Almost the same result as we got but slightly lesser reward.

If the Klingons had headed to base at top speed there was a chance (roll dice) they could use intimidation to cow the child and destroy him. If not you lose crew. With no Intimidation you lose crew. If you try to kill Karl he finds out in advance using his strange powers and beams back to the planet. You can let him go and lose some points or form a landing party and pursue. Roll dice with bonuses for Intimidation, Bravery, Telepathy, and Treachery. If you roll well you kill the boy. Fail and you lose 3 men.

Kirk, Spock, and McCoy beam down with a trio of security guards.

We arrive in a pre-industrial town. The people wear home-spun cloth. They refuse to speak with us and seem frightened by our party. Spock found a nuclear power source with his tricorder which would be above their apparent technology. We made out way towards it and came to a temple guarded by priests who blocked our way. One them said: "You are not of the Community. You must be integrated. You must see Landru." We are escorted to a room containing an altar and a glass-sided booth. The priests attacked and tried to force us into the booth but we fought them off.

Behind the altar we find a computer calling itself Landru after the name of its programmer. Landru created the computer to enforce a kind of paradise by controlling the minds of the people of this planet. What should we do?

A) Attempt to reprogram Landru.
B) Reason with Landru to point out how its approach is flawed.
C) Destroy Landru.

This seemingly idyllic planet is a deathtrap. It is as if the planet itself is fighting us. The fauna is inimical to life and a storm formed with incredible rapidity. One warrior died after being hit by lightning. Trocorder readings show the power source is located a few kilometers from here.

What should we do?

A) Beam the party up immediately; the planet is too dangerous.
B) Reinforce the landing party by beaming down additional personnel.

The invasion is executed with great precision but animals charge into the sterilized portion of the planet and continue to attack the party. The planet eventually fights back itself and gravity begins fluctuating and the ship must break orbit. The landing party is forced to evacuate.

The crew gains 3 Reputation for their fierce battle for the Empire.

What might have been

If the Federation had not had Logic (or Lying) Landru would have self-destructed when trying to persuade it. You win but take one casualty and the reward is lower. If you attempt to reprogram Landru you need the Science skill. If you do not have it the entire landing party is absorbed into the society and are lost. If you do have Science the Federation gets almost as good a result as above as Landru assist the society. If the Klingons reprogrammed the Landru enforces absolute obedience to the Empire and it joins as a Klingon satellite. If you destroy Landru then you take one casualty and the people fall into a sleep. When they awake they are capable of only rudimentary and simple activities. A medical mission must be sent to help them. Victory but a low point one.

If the Klingons had not had Ruthlessness they could have used telepathy to contact the planet and been instructed to leave. If they had fled by beaming up there is a minor loss of reputation. If you reinforce the landing party and have telepathy you make contact and roll a die to see if you win. If not you get a minor victory.
