There is an excellent way to reduce Terror (until it gets patched out) (Spoiler for a path not taken) If you help the cavies establish their kingdom then whenever you visit with SAY they'll throw you a banquet and entertainment that reduces Terror by 25. That's a lot, especially free.

Back when I started, if you failed a check you were given an option to use a second chance. Then it was changed to automatically use it if you failed a check. Then it was changed to an optional tickbox that would use up a second chance whether you succeeded or failed.
