https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8FrTuZxpD0k Stream location: Hitbox. Stream date and time: Wednesday, March 18, 5 PM PDT. In-game date and time: 1942, February 27, 0800. Stream content: Setting out for another patrol! What will we find? Inspired by HerpicleOmnicron5's real-time LP of Silent Hunter 3, I decided to pick up Silent Hunter 4 and give it a go. Further inspired by said LP, I decided to give an LP of the game a go as well. Unlike its predecessor, Silent Hunter 4 focuses on the American side of the sub war, starting the day after Pearl Harbor and continuing to the end of the war. (An expansion adds U-boats.) The theater of operation is war of the Pacific: Japan, China, Indonesia, all that fun stuff. There are several subs to choose from, but they're largely evolutionary upgrades rather than vastly different boats. Now, I'm not going to be playing this real time. Why? One simple image. Herp got into port from his first mission on February 16. He's taking an over a month break from the LP (though he is, apparently, streaming other stuff during the break). I don't want to do that, so between streams I'm going to be time-accelerating until something interesting happens, then saving the game to pick up at the next stream. (During a stream, though, I'll be staying real time.) My stream schedule will be irregular—my life is pretty busy—but I'll be sure to announce a stream at least 12 hours before it happens. Unlike Herp, I'm in the US, so streams will tend to happen in the 4 PM-midnight PST block. I'm using the Real Fleet Boat and Run Silent, Run Deep mods. The former makes the game more realistic (for instance, boats don't simply have HP you have to deplete with torpedo hits) without making it as hard as Trigger Maru does. The latter greatly improves campaign generation. I'm also using these realism settings: Once I get more comfortable with the game, I may turn off a few of the aids I've left on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zoPi7SFfScw The thread decided that, of the two fleets available to me at the start of the war, I would join Task Force 3/51/71. (I believe that actually means Task Force 3, moving to Task Force 51, then Task Force 71, later in the war.) This puts me in the worst boat in the game, an S-18 class sub: The bright side is that we're much closer to the action than SubPac, which starts in Pearl Harbor. The down side is that... we're much closer to the action. Manila, for instance, is lost to us fairly early in the war, and we'll lose other bases along the way. Let's hope we do at least as well as the historical S-38! FredMSloniker fucked around with this message at 23:31 on Mar 17, 2015 |

S-38. Get good torpedoes. Then lose them when you upgrade boats The dud rate seems less than Historical. Or I got REALLY good angled shots in.

Gimme the S-37, then switch to the Pike if you rapidly die.

drat it, if you'dve told me you'd have much better production values than me I would never have said "Sure, you can plug your thing in my thread." Now I look bad. Take USS S-38 (SS-143). You need to experience the bad bote before you get a good one, just to appreciate just how much faster a good one is.

Just so you know I've got basically zero experience with Silent Hunter, so any and all info on the game people can provide for us interested newbies is welcome.

I'm much better at doing forum posts than streams. Don't be surprised if I completely flub things and show off a collection of porn that may or may not be mine at some point. Also, I notice some people are confused about the name of the Task Force boat. Which is fair enough, since the name in the screenshot is different from the one I mentioned at the end of the post. The game selects from the names of the historical boats at that time and in that fleet. The names I mentioned are the ones of the boats I've created save files for. chitoryu12 posted:Just so you know I've got basically zero experience with Silent Hunter, so any and all info on the game people can provide for us interested newbies is welcome. I admit to being something of a novice to this as well (don't ask how many times it took me to figure out how to get to the patrol zone without running out of fuel or running aground), so hopefully folks will chime in who actually know stuff! Night10194 posted:How unreliable are your torpedoes going to be? Infuriatingly so? Well, the Real Fleet Boat mod manual does make a note about the torpedoes being less reliable than stock, but it doesn't gloat about it like the Trigger Maru mod manual does, so we'll just have to cross fingers and hope for the best! So far, the voting is 3 for a SubPac boat and 4 for a Task Force 3 boat. Still plenty of time to make your vote count!

Hooray for sub LPs! Take S-38. Target rich environment and working torpedoes. Who care if you are driving a sub that was brand new when the Kaiser was still a thing? The P-boats are better defensively and are a little more surviveable but faulty torpedoes mean relying on deck gun kills and Japanese ships rarely travel alone. Upgrade later to an S or T fleet boat in a few months when they start to get a grip on some of the torpedo flaws.

Placing a vote for the S-38.Xenocides posted:Hooray for sub LPs! Adding on to this, another danger with relying on deck gun kills is even if you find a Japanese ship that's alone you might very well encounter ones that are armed. Even machine gun fire can screw a submarine right up.

Voting will end at 1 PM PST. Though I suspect I know what the result will be, given it's currently 3 for a SubPac boat and 7 for a Task Force 3 boat. The first stream will be Sunday, February 22, at 4 PM PST, on my Hitbox channel. We'll be leaving port, with some random musical accompaniment, as I get my sea legs (so to speak) streaming the game! (I'm going to add a stream link and 'next session' info to the OP as well for easy access.) FredMSloniker fucked around with this message at 07:48 on Feb 24, 2015 |

December 7, 1941 FROM: Commander Submarine Force, Task Force 3/51/71 Cavite Naval Base, Manila, Philippines TO: Lieutenant Commander Fred Sloniker Commanding Officer, USS S-38 (SS-143) Your boat and crew have completed training and are now ready for combat operations. Review your enclosed operation order, and make your boat and crew ready for sea. This is the between-mission menu. Various objects can be interacted with:
Operational Order December 7, 1941 TO: Fred Sloniker, USS S-38 (SS-143) DEPART ON: December 8, 1941 Proceed at best speed to Vigan via Lingayen Gulf and conduct combat patrol and reconnaissance. Remain on station for 12 hours in the Lingayen Gulf and within 40nm of its center point. Make daily reports as necessary to TF3 OBJECTIVE: Recon of Lingayen Gulf We've been given a really simple first task--the first task for SubPac boats is usually 'sail all the way from Pearl Harbor to Japan, then patrol this area for 96 hours'--but once we've finished this one, we can expect to get several followups before we return to port. Also worth noting is that the enemy is already at Manila... FredMSloniker fucked around with this message at 03:14 on Feb 23, 2015 |

Good luck! In real life the S-38 was an unreliable tub, and it seems somewhat miraculous that she didn't sink after surviving so many detections and mechanical failures. I'm sure you'll do just fine

Heh, you've already got your first large convoy? I recommend doing what I did, head below periscope depth and aim with hydrophones. Just fire a big ol' salvo of Uncle Sam's best in their general direction, you're bound to hit at least one, maybe two vessels.

I'm going to need time to review the footage, but the short version of what happened: we found a huge convoy, evaded some minesweepers, put four torpedoes into the rear of a large freighter (sadly, two were duds), and are currently hiding from retribution by subhunters. I don't know if two Mark 10s is enough to sink a freighter, but we gave it a valiant effort. Now a poll. I anticipate it taking a while for the convoy's escorts to lose interest. Should I play off-camera and get to where something interesting is happening again before resuming stream, or should I pick up right where we left off? I'm easy either way, but I figured I should ask. You have until 1 PM, Wednesday the 25th, to make your voice heard! Next stream date and time: Wednesday, February 25, at 5 PM PST.
