Some very nice green goo and floaty rock deposits to your north-east for a city (the geothermal + worm goo to your south-west would also be good if not for all the fissures rendering over half the tiles unusable) so there's some solid opportunities for going Harmony or Purity (you always want at least Supremacy 3 regardless because FREE ROADS!). No glowy crystals in sight though which is a pity so probably not a great idea to shoot for more than Supremacy 3.
In my test runs, I discovered two glowy crystal deposits, with eight units each, to our southeast, hopefully well out of Kavitha's grasp. So if you guys want to eventually go full :awesomelon:, it definitely won't be a problem.

That being said, I'm not too concerned with available resources when it comes to Affinity choice. This is more about creating a believable society than an optimal Civilization.

They can gently caress you up before you get Ultrasonic Fences, and even then, they can kill a soldier if they throw sufficient bodies at it. It's not so much that they're an existential threat, but that they can really throw off your opening game, i.e. the post important part of Civ.

Siege worms can also be a severe nuisance if you don't have the firepower to deal with them and they decide to go back and forth through all your improvements just outside the ultrasonic fence, and sea dragons make exploring the sea irritating.

Oh well yeah if you have sixteen units of glowy crystals then you're well positioned to take any Affinity combination you want.

That's interesting actually; usually I find I'm short of float rocks or glow crystals, usually there's always plenty of green goo though not always. I've almost never had a start with all three Affinity resources located nearby in quantity without bumping the resources up to Abundant.

But the aliens are like entirely non-aggressive so long as you're not within ~2 - 3 spaces of their nests for the first few dozen turns at least, I can understand how blindly walking into an alien nest would get yourself killed but I have yet to ever actually feel threatened by the aliens and the only time I've ever lost troops to them was when I either didn't scout what I was walking into or underestimated the quantity of enemies.

I guess I can understand how the aliens might throw your poo poo off but I feel like anything short of a Siege Worm deciding it wants to hang out is easily dealt with.

Yeah Sea Dragons are annoying, though easily dealt with, Krakens are way worse though because none of the ships you can make are melee units so if they get into melee with your botes you are screwed. Fortunately they're also almost blind and so if they're caught without Sea Dragon protection they can be bombarded to death with relative ease.

The Siege Worms thing can actually be dealt with by picking the +1 range upgrade to Ultrasonic Fences, though that unfortunately leaves your Trade Caravans open to the Aliens raiding them. Personally I prefer to make my Trade Caravans immune but as mentioned I rarely have issues with aliens attacking my cities so

Chapter 3: The Earth Drinker

We are happy to welcome you to Freeland, new friends!

Thank you. Our scientists will share what knowledge and equipment we have brought with us, and all of us will prosper.

Performing the expedition at the Augmented crash site also found this. Apparently their augmentation was not solely mechanical.

We also finished researching Chemistry around the same time. There are some other branch techs it unlocked that would currently take us about a hundred turns to research, but it did give us access to the leaf tech Biochemistry. This would allow the building of Water Refineries, which improve the yield of water tiles, and Petrochemical Plants, which improve the yield of oil wells. Neither of which are immediately useful, but it's something to keep in mind.

So... shall we discuss business? Trade between our people should be quite lucrative.

That would be optimal.

Great, great! Just sign here on the dotted line, and we can get started...

What does this small text toward the bottom say?

Don't worry about that, buddy. It's all standard stuff.

And so joint work on a centralized commercial structure began, which would facilitate trade throughout Freeland and beyond. Feelers were sent to Kavitha Thakur, who proved very amenable to the idea of inter-colonial trade. She did, however, express worries about the extreme dangers such a trip would present. The diplomats dismissed her fears. Armed escorts were more than enough to ward off the mostly harmless insect-like animals that inhabited the region.

Only one member of the delegation returned.

Transmissions from the Franco-Iberian, Brasilian, and African expeditions were nearly lost in the scramble to react to the creature's sudden appearance. It was moving along the city's northern border, burrowing through the ground at a phenomenal rate and creating seismic events that could be felt all the way in Freeland. But so far, it has not moved toward the city itself.

Hutama sent the new arrivals a polite but brief message, then set about overseeing the assembly of a satellite found in one of the nearby resource pods. Hopefully it would allow tracking of the worm's movements.

Wines and sweets sound wonderful. Another time perhaps.

This is the orbital layer. Blue tiles are our orbital coverage, how far out we can launch satellites. The bright green area is the radius the currently selected satellite will cover. Some, like the solar collector, also improve yields in a city if it's within the radius.

All the areas marked in blue now receive +1 Energy, and Freeland itself gets +20% Energy. It doesn't actually help us keep an eye on the Siege Worm at all, but I figured that was a good way to introduce it.

Meanwhile, far to the south...

"What is that...? The doorways on these buildings are at least fifteen meters high. Let's get out the survey equipment."

The main reason I stopped here is that we are one turn away from another Virtue. (These will get less frequent as time goes on, so I'll be able to play further without having to ask.) Our build queue is spoken for for a while, with Freeland building a Trade Convoy, then a Colonist, unless anyone objects. You can also vote on research priorities, if you like. The options are the same as before, with the addition of Biochemistry. Also, the Virtue options are the same as well, except for one new one in Industry:

Progenitor ruins are probably the best to find in the whole game. They're usually at least a free affinity level, which is always lovely. Should we be trying to get Computing (if that's the name - it's the spy tech) sooner rather than later? In light of the threat that some native life now obviously poses to the colony, dedicated research into understanding its ecology has begun.

Meanwhile, the Central Planning Committee is debating which citizens to prioritize in its new socialized health plan. The people are encouraged to make their opinions known before the CPC makes a decision.

Defense workers gives +15 City Hit Points, meaning cities are able to withstand more damage from units before they are taken. (Cities are basically super-units, and this gives them more HP.)

Civil workers gives +1 Health, which is a strong and versatile benefit.

Sorry for the super-short update, but this quest triggered literally two turns after I started. Every building in the game has a decision point like this associated with it, with the building providing further bonuses depending on what we pick. I probably won't put every single building quest up to a vote, but some of them are very interesting.

Thanks to the reassembly of scientific equipment from resource pods, Ecology research was completed quickly, soon to be followed by a concerted genetic engineering project.

It's wonderful that the health care initiative is paying off. Especially since I legally count as a civil worker. Of course, I also legally count as a defense worker, but that's neither here nor there... It's getting awfully crowded on this planet. The Slavic Federation has showed up. I hope that's the last of them.

Sure thing, madam! You know how much I love cooperation.

...I may just do that.

Some enterprising individuals from several different expeditions have also begun setting up independent stations. Omoikane Group is setting up some kind of weird monastery. Better draw up some new trade contracts...

Stations are similar to city-states from previous Civ entries. Their primary benefit is giving various bonuses if you establish trade routes with them. Omoikane's benefit is +4 Food in the city establishing the route. The name is likely based on a Shinto deity of wisdom: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omoikane_%28Shinto%29

Speaking of, it looks like the first convoy is ready to go. Now, be careful mates, th... Wait. Where did the giant worm thingy go? Hmm. Well, I'll authorize the expedition for now, but watch yourselves. I don't like this.

Seriously, the Siege Worm just vanished. I'll take it though, since it would have been right in the path of our convoy otherwise. And yes, Kavitha is getting more Energy and Science from this trade route than we are, but Hutama's a nice guy like that.

Uh huh. Well, pick up anything you think might be useful, then report back to base.

Another derelict settlement was found to the west by our second explorer team. How many people have been here before us? And how many not-people? ...Hmm. I'm getting some interference in my wi-fi linkup. I hope I don't have to call tech support. Those poor, overworked bastards. I'll chill some wine for them if they do have to come.

Uh... Okay then. 'Culper' sounds familiar... drat I miss Wikipedia.

I would have liked to play longer, but the derelict settlement bumped us up to the next Culture threshold. I'm pretty sure I know what Virtue you guys are going to pick, but asking is the polite thing to do. Here's the new one our previous choice unlocked:

Chapter 5: Skin and Chrome

Hello! You have reached the desk of Planning Officer Hutama. He is currently occupied with crisis management now that the Great Worm has resurfaced, but please enjoy his personal automated news service in the interim.

Freeland continues to develop closer relations with its neighbors, with a slew of open border and trade agreements drawn up by the tireless Hutama.

He even takes it upon himself to act as a third party when they negotiate treaties of their own. Let it never be said that he is selfish.

There were several brief debates about the optimal use of public structures, but the Central Planning Committee was able to quickly analyze and incorporate majority opinion into its decisions. Hutama always has his fingers on the pulse of the people.

I don't find either of these quests particularly interesting, so I just picked the option that seemed most in line with our choices so far.

Genetics research has also borne fruit. With it, large-scale health issues could conceivably be eliminated.

Resources have now been allocated toward Computing projects, which will be of significant benefit to the entire community.

If people are interested in setting research priorities, I can write up descriptions of the available techs if it will help. They're not the main thing to vote on in this update though.

A group of massive trucks carrying building materials, a number of more adventurous Polystralian families, and nearly the entirety of the Augmented population was assembled in Freeland, and recently began setting up downstream of the great Neo Musi River. Under the protection of the Augmented, Jimboomba is rapidly growing.

You can't rename cities until this outpost period ends, in which the settlement slowly acquires tiles around it until the first ring of hexes is taken. However, Jimboomba is a great name that at least one poster liked, so we'll stick with it for now. Subsequent cities will be called by other names the thread has suggested.

The Augmented have been developing a growing number of adverse side effects, including a small but increasing number of deaths, relating to their implants. This is likely because this planet lacks the resources used to create them. With continued research, it is possible these problems could be overcome, but it may be simpler and more humane to remove the augmentations entirely. Many Polystralians have grown accustomed to these refugees, but others continue to keep their distance, or express outright bigotry toward them. Still more believe that it is far too dangerous, either morally or socially, to keep the implants around. Making matters more complicated, the Augmented themselves are just as split on the issue. The Planning Committee must decide what the government's official policy will be, and soon.

Hutama feels your pain and shares your belief in #concerns, Citizen #name. Rest assured that he will #action to help solve these issues immediately.

Continue Research. With the constant threats of this world's wildlife, we can't afford to look away from anything that could help keep our people leading normal, functional lives in the event of serious injury. If the Augmented are offering their research and insight into artificial limb replacements, then I see no reason not to accept that offer. More to the point, stripping them of their augmentations would be an egregious violation of their rights as individuals. Do we really want to be known as a nation of people who disrespect the rights of immigrant citizens solely because we don't like their ways?

Well, in that case...

Fellow citizens, there is no alternative here. Believe me, I'm just as interested in the results of continued research of the augments as you are, but this is a matter of ethics. Gambling with the lives of the Augmented is wrong. The truth is simple: Many of them will die sooner, rather than later, as their augments fail one by one, if we don't do anything about the issue. We cannot rebuild them - We don't have the technology. And even if we could, can any of you guarantee than they wouldn't spend the rest of their lives being discriminated against? Sadly, the last few months have sorely disappointed me in that regard. However, we do know how a human body works, and we have advanced medical facilities that allow us to undo the changes the Augmented underwent. We can help them become fully human again. We must help them become fully human again! It's the only right thing to do!

I would contest the idea of immediately choosing to remove the augmentations as an immediate reaction; in dedicating ourselves to this path, we cut off other possibilities. Let us instead provide for the Augmented and seek to recreate and enhance their augmentations, using what technologies and materials we can. Social care can alleviate the pains of the misunderstanding and short-sighted, while the service they can provide may allow us steps beyond mere 'functionality'.
It may be callous to say they will die no matter what, but truth is callous, and life is harsh; let the possibility of a hastened death have meaning, rather than restoring them to live another dozen years in obscurity. Let them become our heroes; hold them up as shining beacons of the human spirit of adventurousness and innovation. Continue the Research.
