Just coming here to point out that in the movies TIEs were p good. 9 ties shot down nearly 30 x-wings and y-wings at yavin and they also held their own at endor. Somebody in the eu thought that having a competent and menacing opponent was bad fiction though so now rookie pilots shoot down scores without blinking and everyone's OC can become a certified ace without it being a big deal.
