redshirt posted:I don't get it. Reincarnated lives seem permanent, and unique. Jains have a thing about this. With infinite reincarnations across endless kalpas, you both will be an already have been everything. And you will do and already have done everything. The reincarnations aren't permanent or unique, they are transitory and each inevitably ends. We only think our lives are unique and permanent because we are unenlightened. Or so the story goes.

So yeah I was thinking: If reincarnation is real, how then to explain the difference in population now compared to in the past? Even just hundred years ago there was like 6 billion less people. Go back thousands of years ago and the difference is even greater. So where are all these reincarnated people coming from?

There's a room of souls that is only depleted when a 'new' soul is born. Most souls are obviously new souls, going by population numbers. And when at least the chamber of Guf is empty, it's Eva time! WOOOOO! hth.

And they each make 3 re-incarnated souls - like shivers of the All Soul or Something - and so on, times 3,000 generations. That first soul would still be reincarnating, and hence be an "Old Soul".

Nice assumption that you get reincarnated as a human right after death. I can't recall which area/culture the following is from, but as I heard it: reincarnation happens beyond human timescales, with the universe/planet even being reborn; you reincarnate as ants, demons, eels, gods, etc.; all that karma white people preach about can take lifetimes to catch up to you.

Tautologicus posted:The tamil tigers are secular marxists..sorry bout ur invective Tamil, not Tamil Tiger, they aren't same thing. Despite their marxist leanings much of the Tiger leadership including Prabhakaran were deeply Hindu privately, and it is ignorant to suggest the civil war had no religious component. Sinhalese buddhist leadership were always the driving force behind oppression of Tamils ever since the British left as they felt the British preferred Hindus to Buddhists. Before the Tigers were even a thing Buddhist leaders were pushing Sri Lankan Tamils to leave Sri Lanka for Tamil India, and were actively a part of creating legislation that removed any agency the Tamil people had over their own farms and plantations. Now that same religious leadership has been promoting serious democratic and human rights violations even after the war ended. Everyone involved in this war was hosed up but I'm not sure why buddhism gets this free pass because a bunch of people decided it was cool before knowing anything about its history.
