I opened up my computer this afternoon to blow some of the dust out of the inside. So I get everything spic'n'span in my case, reconnect the cables, and turn it on. Everything's OK.... until it gets to where Windows begins booting (Win2K, the bar along the bottom). No bar, just a blank screen. Oh poo poo. Turn it off and reboot, this time trying to get into the BIOS setup. Won't let me into the BIOS, just continues booting. Same thing happens. I for some reason hit the 3-fingered salute, and it starts to load Windows. Great! Get to the splash screen, it blue-screens. drat it! Repeat the cycle, get to the password screen, it appears to lock up. Turn the computer off, open the case, wiggle the IDE cables. Close the case, take a look at the back cables. I had plugged the keyboard and mouse in the wrong PS/2 ports. I switch them around, and everything works perfectly. That's what I get for hooking stuff up in low light. So feel free to use the rest of this thread to recall your computer gently caress-ups, or just to call me a moron. I earned it.

One time I broke a cpu pin when installing it. I snipped off the tip of a sewing needle and put it in the ZIF socket before the CPU. Worked.

One time I tried to plug in a USB cable but it wasn't going in, so I flipped it around and it still wasn't going in, so I had to flip it around again, at which point it finally went in. It turned out I had it oriented right the first time!

I once opened up my laptop to see how broken one the hinges was. The top of the laptop wiggled and would cause problems like audio muting, system windows opening up, etc. I examined everything and sure enough, the hinge was completely broken and messing with wires. Unable to do anything about it, I closed it back up, experiencing some resistance near the hinge point. I go to turn the laptop back on and nothing happens. I plug it into the wall and still nothing. I open it back up and find the broken hinge had severed the power wire from the board.
