I didn't give a poo poo about Drakengard OR NiER until I read The Dark ID's LPs. I'm now interested in the mythos and lore, and have my own ideas for stories that could occur in the Drakengard universe. I was on the border with whether or not to pay for an account on this site, and then I saw that he had uploaded the introduction and opening on Youtube. So thank you, Dark ID; I can't wait to see what you do, LIVE.

Oh, it was mentioned somewhere in the LP thread for it. Or possibly in another one TDI did after. It actually did a sincerely good job of turning people onto the game, and a number of people (myself included) went out and got it, without regrets, thanks to it. It is a genuinely special game that deserves love. I like to think Drakengard 3 was made possible by those sales royalties. (the true story is that for some reason Yoichi Wada just fuckin' loves this series and let it stick around as a pet project for ex-Cavia) Mazed fucked around with this message at 07:24 on Mar 4, 2015 |

Put me firmly in the camp of people who irrationally love this game. I was even crazy enough to platinum trophy the game. The hardest part was honestly just getting all the endings.

I can appreciate it entirely based on it being so fantastically different and creative in its own way, despite its ridiculous flaws and obvious hatred for its player.

Seeing people talk about Michael's name, there are quite a few angel names in this game so I might do brief runthroughs of what each name means. Sort of like how most of the characters in Drakengard had names from the list of demons in the ars goetica: Caim, as an example, is a prince of hell always seen with a sword, and allows people to speak (heh) with animals. Also has the head of a thrush which might explain the hair colour.

Well by that logic Hideo Kojima would visit Chip Cheezum personally to give him a high-five. And possibly shoot me in the neck with a tranquilizer dart and dump me unconscious on Sid Meyer's porch.

I don't know whether it's more puzzling that they actually made a Drakengard 3, or that TDI would choose of his own free will to suffer through it.

I actually work at Visceral Games. I know, it's surprising. Also, looking forward to the LP, Drakengard 3 is a great/awful game depending on who you ask! (I think it's great)

Also, after having watched playthroughs of the game, I can't help but feel that the localization team of the game might've read the other LPs, because I swear that Dito sometimes sounds exactly like DarkID's Caim. On another note, all the hosed-uppedness of the Drakengard mythos can ultimately boiled down to one thing; Taro Yoko claimed that the themes of the first game and NiER were, "Why do you kill?"

In fairness, NieR is a game that, as a game, is merely okay. There are other games that, gameplay-wise, do better at what it does (though it certainly tries to do quite a lot). But not the story, not the music, not the characters, and not the weird, hilarious, tragic, sincere heart that it has. There really isn't anything else quite like it in those respects.

Drak 3 is legit one of my favorite games of 2014 just because it says gently caress it and does whatever it wants and does not care if the player is alright with any of it. Sometimes it's magical sometimes it's soul-shattering.

Yeah Drakengard 1's story and dialogue is fun to watch but actually playing it is awful, it's like playing a very dull version of Dynasty Warriors. Nier is the only remotely playable game in the 'original trilogy'.

Hell, I'd argue that said psychopath and his friend's stories in that game aren't just poignant and touching in comparison to the rest of the morons, but a genuinely moving tale in and of itself. It's the biggest indication to me that D2 was one massive Troll By Cavia™ on people wanting a 'proper' JRPG.

It's probably a nitpick but one thing that strikes me as really off is the platemail-wearing soldiers and cannons. Doesn't the existence of gunpowder kinda invalidate full plate mail?

Doesn't the existence of gunpowder kinda invalidate full plate mail? That one's actually kinda weird historically, as matchlocks (expensive and finicky, to say nothing of requiring an open flame near gunpowder) really didn't do a god drat thing to slow the rise of plate, and indeed both had very strong growths in the 15th and 16th century. Both kinda died in the 17th because flintlocks could just as easily penetrate plate at great range and were both less finicky and provided their own spark. Cannons actually did the opposite due to the way they were used, with later varieties of shot designed for doing as much damage to as many people as possible making breastplates useful for infantry, since it'd prevent many cases of death by cannon shooting forks or other lightweight metal bits at people.
