Karin Handel Owner of Handel Trading Former Chief Magnate of the Isrianda League +2 Domain (Item): Gold Scale Many many years ago, creatures existed in the land. Real, huge creatures. Dragons, most especially. What did dragons crave? Gold. Gold, jewels, anything they could add to their hoard. They didn't do anything with it, just sat on it, making a bigger and bigger hoard, making it an increasingly appealing target for the brave, the bold, the greey, or the desperate. What a man could carry would set a family for life, and they said, if you were bold enough to get one, the scale off a dragon could bring a lifetime of fortune and success. That's what Karin's mother always told her. The reason for their success, she'd said, passed to her from her father, from his mother, from her mother, and so on. Ten generations, mother said - then she always did love a good story. It seemed to Karin that their success seemed to be due more to hard work and keen intellect. Then again, Handel Trading had been a dominant merchant company in the realm for as long as anybody could remember, one of the founding members of the Isrianda League. Named for city of its establishment, the League served as its own quazi-government, resolving disputes among member, making sure people who did business were members. All to keep the realm tied together, the wheels of industry turning, trade flowing, and most importantly, the profits flowing. Karin assumed the ownership of Handel Trading when her mother passed about ten years ago. Her best efforts couldn't keep the League from breaking up in the face of civil war. Everybody wanted to retreat to their corners, figure out how to weather the storm, and sack enough away to come out of winter on the other side. That's not Karin's style. Fortune, as they say, favours the bold. Let the cowards hide. She'll wheel, deal, twist arms, and more. Maybe the scale will help. -2 Foible: All about the Platinum Potentates In a world filled with Queens, Scions, Divine Kings, Daimyos and more, a merchant doesn't get a lot of respect, not even when she's one of the richest people in the land and has her fingers in a huge percentage of the economy. No noble blood, no family name, no flag to go out and die for. Merchants aren't soldiers, and the soldiers they have...they cost money. And want food. And need ships. And...and...and... Your Troop: Escorts No, they don't really have a clever name. With the dissolution of the Israndia League, Karin's returned to her home city of Yesrel, an port city on a small island just off the East coast, and conveniently along most of the major trade routes in the East. The Escorts, the bulk of Karin's 'fighting force', are the security force for Handel Trading's important cargoes and vulnerable ships. Yesrel has its own city guard, but they're not going to range out of the city no matter how much Karin leans on her uncle Isrin, the affable mayor of the city. The Escorts are particularly adept at archery, spotting, tracking, and close-quarters combat - perfect for protecting a wagon train on the move, a cargo in a warehouse, or removing a particularly troublesome competitor. Not that they do that. Who told you that? How were you betrayed? The sheer stupidity of man. Hailing from an independent city, Karin never grasped, at a visceral level, the nationalistic impulses that took hold of her colleagues in the League. Men would oppose a deal because the good would go to the other side. Long time partnerships dissolved in the face of rising North-South tensions. Governments leaned on their merchant class, warning of fines or worse if they traded with 'the enemy'. The enemy!? All so much insanity, as far as Karin was concerned. This was business! In the end, the League was not a kingdom, Karin was not a Queen, and the League dissolved. Which side were you with before the betrayal?: Neutral As an old saying goes, know your enemies, but do business with them always. Two things to do in this game Get rich Find a cause bigger than herself (but really, probably get rich!) As for a portrait, I've had a bit of trouble finding a good one for Smallgods. Below is the original inspiration for Karin...which admittedly much more appropriate for a Big Gods game. Still gave me some of the basic ideas, and maybe Karin will move towards this as the scale starts doing its thing? Who knows!

Zombie #246 posted:Flexible for the most part, though in my head the idea I had was princess mononoke type of rarity. That makes sense since the argument can be made that most people have never seen a Memmonite (or misidentify it as a type of Pokemon) but would probably have met or seen one in a major city someplace. Plus I think they live in weird out of the way rural areas like some sort of mysterious pacifistic bearded gorillas in the mist. I have included a small blurb of backstory in my post. Still kind of wriggling it around and trying to get the voice/idea down but you get the picture I think. The King has fleas (or likes to play pranks on his courtiers with them), has powers as monkey do, and a vague plan in the works somehow.

Etel We are the people of the wolf. Our ancestors were wolves who took the form of men. This, I know to be true. This is why the world is ours, to hunt as we will, and why it is our destiny to prey on the weaklings who cower in their cities. We are not like them. We roam as we wish, take what we wish. We are the Hsang, and we live as we have since the world began. The gods gave us our horses, our sheep and goats, and our swords and bows; the first to let us travel as we wish, the second, to feed us and give us what we need; and the third, to make our enemies fear us. We have no need of great cities like the southerners. How confined that is! The world is our home. The fools to the south call us barbarians, but it is they that are the barbarians. They are all slaves, who serve lords they don't even know, who they have not seen prove themselves in battle or leadership, who have no right to rule them. What sheep! Men and women do not act that way. Only beasts do. Recently, they fought a war, a civil war, over who should rule, the northerners and the southerners. They had great armies arrayed against each other; soldiers who knew not why they fought, who only fought because they were told to by their kings and lords, who, of course, did not risk their lives in battles. Imagine that! Fighting for a man who won't even take up arms himself! They are strange, the southerners. We fought in the war ourselves, but we knew why we fought. We fought for money and for loot. Both sides paid us to fight their enemies, but we were neutral in who we supported. We fought for those who would give us the most and pay us the best. The barbarians in their cities say that that is dishonorable, to fight for gain. But how is it dishonorable? Why fight if you don't think it will benefit you? Indeed, that's the best reason to fight...for gain or to protect what is yours. I know what it is to fight for what is yours. I am Etel. My father was the chief of the Hsang, and when he died, I became chief after him. I remember, on his deathbed, he gave me Tuz, the Bow of Flame. This has been handed down from chief to chief since the gods created us. It is a magic bow, which never runs out of ammunition. One merely pulls back the bowstring, and an arrow of flame appears, to inevitably hit the target. Only the chief of the Hsang can use it, and by giving it to me, he made me chief, which the elders approved. I ruled the Hsang well, I think. I ruled them wisely. I made them rich. But, I confess, my weakness is that I have always been impulsive. My brother, Octar was always the better planner and schemer, and that was why he succeeded when he betrayed me. While I was out winning victories for the Hsang, he stayed behind, and used his cleverness and silken tongue to overthrow me; to convince the Hsang that he should be their chief. I fled, with those loyal to me. Was I a coward for fleeing? I don't think so. If I stayed I would die. But now I'm alive, with a troop of Hsang still loyal to me. And I still have Tuz, the Bow of Flame, which shows I am the true chief of the Hsang. What do I want? First, I want my [b]revenge, on Octar and those who betrayed me. I will return to the Hsang someday, and get my vengeance on my brother and the rest of the traitors. Second, I want [b]power over the cities to the south. Why should those unworthy lords have all their wealth. The men of the cities are sheep, and the Hsang are shepherds. It is time to shear them. To summarize Name: Ezel Troop: Hsang Loyalists Magical Item: Tuz, the Bow of Flame [Fire +2) Foible: Impulsivity -2 Betrayal: He was chief of the Hsang until his brother, Octar betrayed him and became the new chief Goals: Revenge on Octar, Power and domination of the land

REDEYE'S GUIDE TO NAHUATL First off, I'd like to apologize for choosing a mythology with one of the most hosed up languages in the known world. The most important thing to remember in Nahuatl pronunciation is that the "tl" you see is something that English has a very hard time pronouncing. Its closest approximation is the Welsh "ll", which should give you an idea of the kind of lunacy we're discussing. So "nahuatl" is pronounced approximately "na-wa-chl". This is kind of a problem since the tl is used a LOT, but apart from that things mostly operate in a consistent and understandable manner. Very similar to Latin--all letters produce the same sound consistently. See this guide: http://www.native-languages.org/nahuatl_guide.htm So, "Hueialtepetl" comes out as "Wey-alteh-pechl" in as many syllables. Feel free to not care about any of this and just copy-paste names if it gives you a headache, I'm not going to blame you in the slightest. = = = Ehecamini's First Impressions posted:Daimyo Tadasu Hayashi, the Silver-Tongue: "Daimyo Hayashi's honor is without question, and his cause is just. Amerigo Hieronymous played by RonwayneKarin's Journal posted:Some people assume I'd hate Amerigo and his naive little Consortium - I don't. It's great, actually. They have a health respect for a businesswoman, maintain stability and rule of law, make it easy to do business. You never really profit from chaos, in the long term. Now if I could just get them to let up on the whole 'corruption' angle.... Aiden Bierne played by Panic Attack Karin's Journal posted:I have trouble believing this is the man of fire. He seems so unassuming, so...pleasant, really. Any man that dichotomous requires cautious care. If he recognizes his own struggles, I think he'll make it. I'd like that. Tadasu Hayshi played by ForeverBwfc Karin's Journal posted:A man of eloquence on the surface who's still a warlord underneath. A remarkably effective and relatively enlightened warlord, yet a warlord none the less. He understands the power of the purse and the need for stability. For that he can be a reasonable...ally. Sun Shahar played by Puppies are dicks Karin's Journal posted:A man? A monkey? I don't know, and I'm not sure I care. This is what kings should be. Entertaining! We all know the Imperial beauracracy is doing most of the actual governing anyway. So why not? Jurou Mori played by Thenabster Karin's Journal posted:A dark thing of dread, this Jurou is. Getting close makes my hair tingle and my skin crawl and my heart turn to stone in my chest. Evil? Darkness, certainly, and darkness I'd avoid. Zaffi Manda played by Redhotkick Karin's Journal posted:One of the many gloomy men who stalks this land - not without good reason, the people of the Savi have a hard lot. On top of that, Zaffi got snared by some of the more malevolent powers of our world. I'm sympathetic...just not enough to put him on my social calendar. Victaria Caspiel played by Rauri Karin's Journal posted:Oh, Taria. We might be good friends, if only you could get off your high horse! Yes, yes, honor honor kingdom house, can we just get drunk and make a deal already? You could take a few tips from the Mankey King! Don't get me wrong, I appreciate Victaria's confidence in me. It's meant a lot through all the rough going of late...she just doesn't get that if I put a crown on my head, it would detach my head from my body. Bjorn Olofson played by Valhawk Karin's Journal posted:A leader forged in ice. He's built something strong, that I give him all credit for. Building it from the bodies of his enemies, that gives me pause. Tangan Ongbak played by Rakovsky Maybe Karin's Journal posted:You know who's more fun than monkeys? Pirates! Buckaneers. Call them what you will (probably what they ask you to), they're usually fun, and with good business sense to boot. They tell some wild stories about Tangan, and even they're true...well, not even the touch of a Goddess can change a pirate's love of gold, rum and women. Anselm played by Hikaizer Karin's Journal posted:Quest for vengeance. Betrayed by his company. This is why the whole continent is going to hell in a hand basket. What's the point of ruling the land when you've burned it all down? Ehecamini played by Redeye Flight Karin's Journal posted:A half-man, half-eagle carrying the mantle of a god, who's leading the last natives of that far-Northern city of Topcala? That must be an exaggeration, or an old legend. Things like that don't happen any more...do they? Etel played by Epicurius Karin's Journal posted:Again with the tribal revenge! It's like nobody's ever heard of civilization! The good news, is that the Hsang - Etel's band, at least - can be trusted, relatively, to do business with. Just not too much. We wouldn't want them getting big ideas. Platonicsolid fucked around with this message at 23:38 on Mar 17, 2015 |
